It was his first game back after being on IR for 9 games to end last season with a broken bone in his foot.

Those last 9 games were, an RB by committee for the Titans but Foreman and McNichols are gone, and Hilliard is out for this game.

They have no proven backup RBs now that Hilliard is out tomorrow.

Henry's first game back was the Divisional game against the Bengals. 20 rushes for 62 yards.

If you look at it I think he was just trying to get out of the pile and his leg was trapped. It looked worse than what it was imo

He was just trying to get his legs free. If you watch the rest of the play, he gets up and is clearly pissed that the defender was holding on to him. He and a defensive player start jawing at each other and Spencer Brown steps in and shoves the defensive player back, away from Allen.

If Allen came close to any kind of taunting penalty, it would have been when he ran down the field and did a little taunting of Ramsey after the Diggs TD.

Which is 7/game and I'm sure more than half of those were Josh's choice to run; not designed runs.

Right. I'd say most of them are his choice. He's ultra competetive and he's also a pretty smart guy. Sometimes he lets his competetiveness get the best of him, but the vast majority of time he's pretty smart about limiting big hits when he runs.

He's done pretty well so far without my input, so I think I'll refrain from telling him how he should play football...

I am not sure watching the Patriot game last week if I have ever seen a player put up decent numbers in a game but be less impressed than I was with Tua.  I mean literally there was nothing he did that was really impressive. Maybe the throw to Waddle for the TD on 4th down but Waddle did all the work.  The offense scored 13 points and he made a number of mind numbing decisions in the game and bad throws that luckily didn't cost them.

If they are impressed with him, they are simply very easily impressed.

I watched the game and I have to agree. His biggest gains of the day were:

    (1) the 42 yd TD by Waddle. This was a good throw and Tua's strength - a 10 yd pass over the middle and he hit Waddle in stride. Waddle did the rest (aided by bad angles by two NE defenders),

    (2) a 26 Yd pass to Hill that was floated 20 yds and caught by the defensive back. Hill literally took it away from the DB,

    (3) a 23 yd pass to Hill. The throw was 19 yds, Hill didn't have a defender within 5 yds of him and the thow felt like it took forever to get there, literally just slightly less time in the air than Allen's 55 yd thow to Diggs

    (4) an 18 yard pass to Hill where the throw was to the LOS,

    (5) a 16 yd pass to Mostert that was a throw to the LOS,

    (6) a 15 yard pass to Edmonds that was thrown 1 yd beyond the LOS.

Inside the New England 40, he was 2-4 for 9 yds, two sacks, one fumble, one dropped interception, and no touchdowns.

Every attempt over 15 yds seemed to be a struggle.

This is a good reality check for those who thing a SB Championship is a given.  Even though they are the favorite, there is still less than a 20% chance they win it all.  So many  variables during the season and playoffs…injuries, officiating, coaching, player miscues.  All it takes is one hiccup in a close game and…

That's why they play the games, right? I (along with almost everyone else) thought Buffalo and KC were the two best teams heading into the Divisional game, with the winner going on and winning the SB. Buff had its 13 second meltdown and the following week, KC had its 2nd half meltdown...

And just like that, the two best teams in football are out of the playoffs.

    You just never know

Re James Cook run here is the photo.

The blocking looks like he should take the red path to the outside, but he cut it up the blue path where he fumbled.

    James cook run.jpg

If you watch the all 22, it appears that Cook is reading Spencer Brown's block. As he approaches, Earnest Jones gets slightly outside of Brown and Cook takes the inside lane. Gabe Davis is clearly going to seal off Nick Jones to the inside and looks as if he sets up for Cook to go outside of Brown. Nick Cook then comes up and Davis doesn't get in front of him and Nick Jones makes the takle. Earnest Jones then punches the ball out as Cook is prone in the air.

I think Cook could have gotten outside outside of Brown. But it sure looks like he is reading Brown's block and takes the inside lane accordingly. Had Davis been able to seal off Nick Jones, Cook would have been in the secondary.

I won't be too harsh on Cook for the play.

Thanks for posting these - just as a quick caveat - Football Outsiders themselves do say to take with a pinch of salt until week 6 normally. Just because obviously DVOA is based on how you perform against an opponent compared to how others perform against that same opponent. So the more info you build up the more accurate the model.

Thanks. I was actually going to add that caveat with it. DAVE represents the games up to that point along with pre-season predictions up until about weeks 4-6. I’ll post them each week.

Its hard to believe the nine rating, I’m pretty certain he would have been pulled if he was that bad, Pff is really not so credible a good deal of the time.

Don't totally disagree. But Bates was pretty bad in pass protection, particularly in that 1st half.

No, that's exactly it: it's PFF. That means it's absolute crap and can suck it.

I’m not endorsing PFF. I post things I run across from different sites. Some people appreciate the info and some don’t. People are free to read it or not read it.

Wow, a 9 for pass blocking? I mean, there were a few times when Josh held the ball longer, but Bates wasn’t a tire fire. A 9 would suggest he had an outing like Colin Brown, but I didn’t think he was that much of a liability.

I know. It is PFF, but still…

  11. Fwiw, PFF gave The following pass blocking grades:

    Dawkins 78.3

    Morse.    64.4

    Saffold. 62.4

    Brown.    59

    Bates.      9

And the following run blocking grades:

    Bates.      70.4

    Morse.      65

    Dawkins    64

    Brown       61.3

    Saffold.     53.8
