I expect the Bills to be VERY active in the draft.
ChanOverChin replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree that QB P. Lynch could play a big role in what the Bills do this Thursday night. There are teams that draft behind the Bills in R1 who need a QB and who may feel the need to make a move for Lynch in R1. That's where the Bills could make a nice haul by trading back in R1 and obtaining additional picks while still getting the impact defensive player that Whaley/Rex covet. it would be tough to pass on DT Rankins or DE S. Lawson though if either are available at #19 overall. -
Why The Bills Should Draft Offense
ChanOverChin replied to Chilly's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No way will the Bills draft a WR in R1. That's just a smokescreen. It will be defense, defense, defense in R1.................unless the Bills think that QB P. Lynch is a franchise QB. The WILL select a WR, but not until R3 or R4. It's just not as important as DL, LB or QB. -
I could give two shiits about how he wears his beard. Do you really want to go through the 2016 with just Taylor at QB with manuel and some late round nobody behind him at QB?? The way Taylor plays he's almost certain to get injured at some point. That means that we will need to have somebody behind who can get the job done. Had we won the two games that Manuel started last year we would have made the playoffs. Lynch looks like D. Bledsoe in his prime with much more mobility. He has the potential to be the best QB in this draft. That alone makes him worth the risk at #19 overall.
-
I think the Bills will take Lynch at #19 overall......if he's there. The Jets will certainly take him at #20 overall if the Bills don't. Whaley may even feel like he needs to trade up to get Lynch. The Bills missed out on QB Ben Roethlisberger many years ago when he was selected just one pick in front of them. Just think about the direction the Bills might have followed had they made a move for QB Rberger instead of settling for WR Lee Evans. You don't pass up the chance to draft a good QB when you have the chance.......well you can, but you won't be employed by an NFL team for very long.
-
Every team needs TWO good QBs for competition and in case one of them gets injured. Taylor is a good QB, but the Bills need to hedge their bet and select the best possible QB in this draft when they get the chance. In a QB driven league why is it that so many people on this board think it's just fine to settle for Hogan or C. Jones when the Bills have the opportunity to draft P. Lynch?? We can't beat the Patriots because their QB is much better than ours. Many, if not most, of the games that are played in the NFL come down to which team has the better QB play. Have you not been paying attention?????????????????????????????????????????? Lynch is capable of being the best QB in this draft and he just may fall right into our lap. Whaley knows it, but he might not be able to take the chance that some team would swoop in and steal him right from under our noses just prior to the #19 overall pick. I think it's a no brainer..........if Lynch is available at #19, you take him.

"MOCK DRAFT" Rounds 1-5,love to here some feed back.
ChanOverChin replied to Gamache518's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
To me, any Bills draft that doesn't include a QB by R4 is a lousy draft. If you look at the status of Buffalo's current roster, QB stands out as a big need, esp. with Taylor and Manuel in the last year of their contracts. The moves that Whaley has made this off season scream that he is planning to take a QB in this year's draft as a high priority. Pass rusher, QB, ILB and even WR are all big needs. I'd like to see the Bills trade down in R1 to obtain and extra R2 pick the they could go: R1 - DE R2 - ILB R2 - QB R3 - NT R4 -WR R4 - DT. -
Which QB do you want the Bills to draft?
ChanOverChin replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
When you look at the current roster in detail it becomes pretty obvious that QB is a big need athat the Bills are indeed postioning themselves to take a QB. Rex is a defensive minded coach and will be prone to push for a defensive player (likely a DL or ILB) in R1 and even R2. However, I wouldn't put it past Whaley to trade down in R1 from #19 overall to obtain another high pick (possibly another R2 pick) so that the Bills can still obtain two defensive starters in R2 and select their QB of the future late in R1. I voted for QB Paxton Lynch and he should be there late in R1. He is 6'-7" and very, very mobile for his size. He has an absolute rocket arm. He reminds me of QB Joe Flacco, but is much more mobile. Lynch has the potential to be the very best QB in the 2016 Draft, which is why the Bills may maneuver to get him late in R1. I've seen many, many mock drafts this year and none of them seem worthwhile without having acquired a very promising young QB. In the scenario mentioned above the Bills would have the following picks and could fill their needs as follows: R1 - QB P. Lynch R2 - DE R2 - ILB R3 - DT R4 - SS R4 - OG/OT R5 - CB R6 - DT/NT R6 - WR. -
I always like to trade down, but if a guy by the name of Paxton lynch is there at #19 overall I think we need to take him. Lynch could prove to be the best QB in this draft and certainly a franchise QB, a definite difference maker. He's 6'-7", 244 lbs, has a rocket for an arm and is extremely mobile for his size. That doesn't mean that we should move T. Taylor. We would need both of them and would be looking good for the future with both guys in the fold.

The norm in the NFL now is to play nickel and dime defenses. That means you had better have guys who can cover. I like what the Bills have done here by adding C. White and S. Marlin, both of whom have played for Rex's brother, who I am sure had a large role in convincing the Bills to sign them. White can also play S. With eight draft picks in the 2016 NFL Draft (R1, R2, R3, R4, R4, R5, R6, R6) you can bet that the Bills will select a CB among those picks. It's just not a high priority any longer. Expect the Bills to try to fortify their front seven on defense instead. They need a NT to play Rex's 3-4 defense properly. Expect them to draft heavily on the defensive side (DE, NT, ILB, DT, CB) along with an OT, QB, and possibly a WR.

What in the world have the Bills done?? How do they expect to be even competitive this year when they are being forced to cut player after player because of their cap situation. Players released thus far: DE Ma. Williams - He didn't play well last year, certainly not commensurate with his $19M+ salary, but who will replace him?? LB N. Bradham - Not a huge loss, but who will replace him?? CB L. McKelvin - His play had dropped off so not a huge loss. TE M. Gray - Showed signs of being a competent play, but the team managed without him last year. WR P. Harvin - Boom or bust type player. Missed too much action to make any type of impact. OC/OG Urbik - Average player, but at least a capable fill in. Who will play backup OC at this point?? DT S. Charles - Decent backup player. The Bills couldn't afford to keep him. LB T. Powell - Rex loved him during training camp last year, but he missed the entire year. The Bills couldn't afford to keep him. S B. Rambo - Made some impact plays last year. Again, the Bills couldn't afford to keep him. WR C. Hogan - The Bills could lose him as well with New England in hot pursuit. It's pathetic that the Bills can barely resign OT C. Glenn and OG R. Incognito. They can't go after QB RGIII or QB C. Kaepernick to try to improve themselves. They will have to hope that QB T. Taylor makes a big jump this year and that they can somehow fill in the gaps with their six draft picks. Meanwhile, Miami is stocking proven players, the Jets are adding players, and so is New England.

With better players on defense along with players who truly buy-in to the Ryan system the defense will be just fine. The D doesn't have to be #1 overall. Top 10 even top 15 will suffice. Getting K. Williams and A. Williams back for a full season and having McKelvin for a full season won't hurt either. What the Bills really need is a better QB..............in order to be able to make the playoffs and advance towards the SB. Roman worked miracles with what he had on offense last year (esp. w/ McCoy, Clay, Henderson, and Harvin missing so much time). There is a reason why the Bills had the #1 rushing attack. It's because they are not ready to rely on Taylor to win games for them. Taylor was a very pleasant surprise (I love what he did for us), but the Bills MUST find a better QB to get to where they want to be.

FYI, I am a lifelong Bills fan (50 years+!!), but I moved to Indy in 1989. Prior to yesterday's game the Colts were rated #3 overall in the power rankings and considered by the so-called experts to be one of the favorites to win the AFC with 12+ wins. Colts fans and Colts sportswriters bought right into it. Then Buffalo completely demolished them. I mean it was 24-0 at one point!!! Rex and the Bills ruined Indy's day for sure. Former Colts HC Rick Venturi was asked what he thought of the game on the radio today. He analyzed every aspect of the game. Basically he said that the Bills rushed at least 5 players on every down and squatted on the short routes. He said that this ploy was so effective against Luck that he expects it to be copied by many of the Colts' opponents. He also said that the Bills have far better players overall than do that Colts and that the Bills' coaching was far better prepared with an excellent game plan. I think all of that says a lot about what the Bills can accomplish this year. Colts fans were calling in and man were they crying. One guy called in and named virtually every player...................... and then said "he sucked". Pagano said, "They threw the kitchen sink at us". The funny thing is I thought stars like Watkins and McCoy looked rusty and will only get better.

I have to speak up for Bryce Brown. This guy has some real talent. I think he has gotten a very bad an uncalled for rap as a fumbler. He only fumbled ONCE last year and technically it wasn't a fumble. He had just had a great 20+ yd run vs KC and was about to score a TD when one of the KC DBs ripped the ball out of his hands just before he crossed the goal line. That was definitely frustrating to watch. If he scores that TD the Bills probably beat KC.......and probably make the playoffs at 10-6!! I remember when he was traded from Phily to Buffalo that Shady McCoy was quoted to say that Brown would easily be the instant starter (ahead of F. Jackson). My point is that we need to give Brown a fair shot. You won't be disappointed. BTW, speaking of Fred Jackson, my take is that he was cut for several reasons: 1. 34 yr old RB (easily the oldest in the league and not likely to play much longer). 2. Scheduled to make $2.75M (a lot for a backup RB behind McCoy). 3. Seemed to become awfully injury prone in his later years. Great player when he was healthy, but he was often missing 4-6 games on a regular basis. 34 yr old bodies just can't take the NFL pounding and recover quick enough. But the biggest reason of all was to make room for Bryce Brown. If the Bills had kept Jackson they would have likely parted with Brown because they could only keep so many RBs. They would have had McCoy/Jackson/Williams/Dixon/Felton. Keeping more than those five would have meant not keeping an important ST player or extra defender. Remember, Whaley TRADED a R4 pick for Brown, who is talented, much younger than Jackson, and makes much less than Jackson. You just know that Whaley fought hard to make room for Brown for those reasons. Plus, Whaley needs the cap room to be able to extend Dareus' contract. It was very sad to see Jackson be let go, but if Brown produces we'll have another nice complementary RB for McCoy for several years to come.

EJ deserves time on the field with first team offense.
ChanOverChin replied to gsurdam's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I honestly think we're going to see all three QBs play at some point during the regular season. I feel like Manuel has NOT gotten a fair shake at this point...........and that is a big mistake by Rex and the coaching staff. How can you fairly evaluate him if he hasn't taken many snaps with the first team in the preseason games?? TT has been a pleasant surprise and if he keeps playing like he has that's great for the Bills, but like several of you have said, Manuel appears to have the highest ceiling of the three. Now is the time (i.e. these next two preseason games) to find out who is the better QB between Taylor and Manuel. We know what we're going to get from Cassel. Do we really need to see anymore?? I say start Manuel next week vs the Steelers. Let him play at least a full quarter if not the entire half. If I'm Rex I've got to truly find out which QB is going to best serve this team through the 16 game schedule and beyond. -
QB: Taylor, Cassel, Manuel (Taylor looks like he may be the starter). RB: McCoy, Jackson, K. Williams, Dixon (tough call on Brown, but he fumbles and is not better than Dixon on ST). FB: Felton. TE: Clay, O'Leary (plus two vets yet to be signed). WR: Watkins, Harvin, Woods, Goodwin, Easley (Hogan has not performed well; Thompson to the PS squad). OT: Glenn, Henderson, Kuoandjio. OG: Incognito, Miller, Richardson. OC: Wood, Urbik. K: Carpenter. P: Schmidt. LS: Sanborn. KO/P Returner: Thigpen (you gotta take difference-makers). DT: Dareus, K. Williams, Bryant, Charles. DE: M. Williams, Hughes, Lawson, Enemkpali, Carrington (Wynn out for the year). LB: Brown, Bradham, Spikes, R. Johnson (Powell has a torn ACL; sign B. Spikes). CB: Gilmore, McKelvin, Darby, Robey, Lankster, Brooks (Lankster beats out Butler, etc.). S: A. Williams, Graham, D. Williams, Meeks, Rambo.

Thoughts outside the box: Move Hogan to CB
ChanOverChin replied to BringBackFergy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Is the OP really serious about this?? Hogan is just not fast enough nor quick enough to change direction the way that an NFL CB is required to do to stay with his man. Hogan is in the NFL because he is big and strong and athletic, but he's just not quick enough to mirror NFL WRs. He would get torched and the HC who put him at CB would be fired. -
Joe B. predicts the 53 for week 1
ChanOverChin replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
CB, I beg to differ. Joe B. (likely to make a name for himself or to draw attention to himself) made the comment that "there was a very good chance that Manuel would be cut this year". It made the national news for Pete's sake. ESPN took it and ran with it. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, when all is said and done, not only will Manuel make the team, it will be Manuel who will be the starter from Day 1. -
Joe B. predicts the 53 for week 1
ChanOverChin replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Joe B. also predicted that Manuel will be cut. I predict that Manuel will be the starting QB for the Bills on Day 1 and things are definitely moving in that direction. No way does B. Brown make the team over Dixon. brown is playing and acting like he doesn't even want to be here. Dixon OTOH is a ST stud, a team leader, a good short yardage RB, and can play FB. Dixon will make the final roster!! I don't think OG Richardson will necessarily make it. WR Goodwin has been a standout while WR Lewis hasn't been healthy enough to show anything. Rex has raved about Goodwin as well. If he continues to play as he has I see Goodwin being much improved this year. His bug-a-boo has always been the injury bug. I don't see the Bills keeping 11 DBs. Meeks/Cockrell will fight it out for the 10th DB spot. Both have not impressed thus far. I do think TE Gray has a huge upside. I'm excited to see what he contributes this year. -
Man, I really enjoyed that. Rex: “We lived in this little, tiny trailer. My brother and I slept in the overhang, the thing above the truck cab. We called it the coffin. Two 6-2 guys. Never turned the air on. We had these narrow, little windows we had to crank open. All we asked for was our own sheet so our bodies wouldn’t touch.” There's no doubt that Rex is such a likeable guy. Who would have ever thought that the Ryans would be associated with the Bills?? It would be awesome for Rex to get one before Buddy passes away.

No proven QB, C. Williams signing, trading a R4 pick for B. Brown, Dareus' one game suspension, shaky O-line, weak LB depth, no proven SS, weak TE depth. Need I say more??

Both Rivers and Weddle (two multi-Pro Bowl veteran players) have fallen out of favor with the SD Chargers. Both are now there for the taking. The only question is.....at what price?? The Bills have a real need at QB and also to a lesser extent at S (River would quarterback the offense; Weddle would quarterback the defense). The Bills continue to sign cheap vet players in order to improve the team w/out eating up cap space. They are only improving their overall depth at this point. Since the draft they have added FB Connor, DE Buchanan, TE Mulligan, QB Simms, DT Fluellen, and plan to add OT Hunter. All at the vet minimum. Those moves are proof that they are doing everything they can to make this team better. They are, in short, in WIN NOW MODE. They have made it known that they aren't planning to sign a guy like OG E. Mathis at this point because they would like to try to keep what little assets they have available to potentially pick up a vet QB, should one become available. In other words, they would be willing to create more cap room for a vet QB, but not necessarily for a high dollar player at another position. As the off-season progresses it will be interesting to see how the Chargers view both Rivers and Weddle, two high dollar, older players. It will also be interesting to see if Rex comes to the conclusion sooner than later than his three QBs may not be good enough for what he would like to accomplish. Personally, I expect Weddle to be waived eventually because he doesn't appear to be in SD's long range plans. He's still a very good S, one of the best in the league. Eventually, the asking price for Rivers may come down significantly. If it ever gets to the point that SD if willing to take less than a R1 pick plus certain players I think we just may see Rex/Whaley take a bite. Your thoughts???
-
When Buddy Nix drafted Manuel I think he thought that the "read-option" QB type like Kap would be in vogue. The problem is that Manuel is not prone to running the ball, even though he is very athletic. It will be interesting to see how Manuel performs with high quality OC working with him and doing his best to put him in situations where he can succeed. I think the neophyte OC that Manuel had to work with the last few years did Manuel no favors.

Bills sign FA DT Andre Fluellen
ChanOverChin replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Actually, Fluellen is a pretty good player. A solid vet. Granted, he may have a tough time making this particular team, but he's no slouch. Dareus will miss game 1. Fluellen could be one of the DTs on the roster for game 1 as a result. I'm sure he's making the vet min. so he hasn't really affected the team's overall cap space.
