The lack of forced fumbles is glaring because he gets SO MANY opportunities on short throws underneath where he finds a receiver flat footed after they either squat down in zone or the QB stops them cold by delivering an inaccurate ball...........and Edmunds does not attempt to knock the ball out despite it being almost impossible for the ball carrier to break a tackle there. Contrast that to Darius Leonard who forced 8 fumbles last year and is a sure tackler WHILE routinely, instinctively delivering the peanut punch on the football.

Or be a smart organization..........draft or UDFA one of many late round WR's who would have been RB's in the NFL of 20 years ago but are now going to be well down an NFL WR depth chart......and use them like a wide-back..........turn that market inefficiency into your favor. RB's today are like CB's of yesteryear..........they play those positions only because they CAN'T play receiver. Exceptions are rare........probably only Christian McCaffrey could be a real legit NFL receiver..........and playing RB tore hizass up. Even Alvin Kamara isn't that guy. Top RB's are only going to give you Cole Beasley like 7-9 ypc production. Getting bigger receiving #'s from your back is always an aspiration but I think some people have this idea in mind that throwing screens to RB's totally catches defense's with their pants down. It's not true. Running backs almost always operate within 5 yards of the LOS..........it makes them pretty easy to account for. Whereas a receiver who might run a 9 route on a CB 30 yards down the field..........throwing a screen to him can be explosive........if he is quick and elusive........or has the instincts and contact balance of a RB(which is what Deebo Samuel is, in addition to being a downfield weapon).

I used to find it astonishing that so many people couldn't understand this.........now I just take it for granted that they won't. One could probably put together 59 pages of legitimate reasons why you shouldn't take a RB in round 1............and maybe that's part of the problem..........there are so many logical reasons that it's hard to choose just a few..........and some folks just can't process that much data.

I've approved of all of Beane's 1st round picks. But you knew that. Be who you want to be.

New York Yankees 2022....Aaron Judge sets AL record with HR #62

I know this much........if this situation occurred in 1983 the player ain't going anywhere near the drunken fans in the stands. He'd have had a glass beer bottle smashed across his teeth by an inebriated fan in a heartbeat and the cops wouldn't know who to blame. I mean sh*t......fans used to throw D batteries at opposing players in Shea Stadium. Fans know that the cell phones are on now too. That actually minimized the damage. Some players just don't know where their bread is buttered. You ignore opposing fans. You simply can't win an encounter with opposing fans so don't even bother. -
And if you are grading production on a curve a late round option like Chandler who put up 6 ypa and 14 ypr in 2021 is a good example of a guy who excelled in a much better defensive conference. It's common sense not to draft a RB in round 1..........there are a mountain of reasons why and tons of supporting evidence. Bills haven't passed on one that went in round 1 in over 30 years and lived to regret it. The only regrets are the one's they did take. But a lot of folks actually think Singletary was a bad pick and desperately needs to be replaced..............and in reality he has produced above what you can expect from pick #72.......or may get from #25. And pick #72 is worth about 220 points of value in trade. Pick #25 is worth 720. How much better than Singletary would a first round RB have to be to justify such a waste of value while also relegating Singletary to the bench?

Yes you were initially arguing that Samuel's YAC production was all schemed. Obviously you've now seen the highlights and saw him turning tons of intermediate routes into big plays after the catch. As I said...........the scheme hurts the Bills YAC..........but there is a chasm between being dead last and scheme limitations when you have a QB like Josh Allen. The Bills chose to build their WR corps around guys who get open but don't produce much in traffic after they catch the ball. They had their reasons.........but it's time to evolve with an improving QB and new OC. And just like they had to evolve from Jordan Matthews/Kelvin Benjamin types they need to evolve to add more YAC talent............the lack of diversity of skill in the WR corps cost them dearly last regular season.........which subsequently put them on the road in the playoffs instead of comfortably at home as they should have been.

Devin Singletary is a career 4.7 ypc RB who actually put up better numbers in college than Hall. For comparison........Leonard Fournette.......long lusted after by RB-centric Bills fans........ is just a career 4.0 ypc RB.........and pretty consistently high 3's and low 4's whether playing with Blake Bortles or Tom Brady. Bills fans simply have a bad case of thinking the grass is always greener because the RB has a higher draft stock or runs a better 40 at a bigger size...........which has been proven wrong time and time again. In the unlikely event that the Bills got top of the league production from Hall..........like Nick Chubb or Johnathon Taylor.....5.3 ypc on 15 carries per game(255 carry pace)..........that's a measly 9 more yards total per game versus an average Singletary day. The Bills should definitely add a RB on day 3 because Singletary is a free agent after the season and because it is a very deep pool or RB's............but they don't need to draft one in the first round and park the productive Singletary on the bench or have them split 20 carries per game. McDermott may disagree.........maybe the objective is to pound the rock for 12 games and then go back into panic mode in December and start running Josh Allen 10 times per game. Either way I don't think you need a first round RB. History has proven that over and over.
-
Yeah heaven forbid the Bills had that option in the Jacksonville game last season. The highlight package I linked above features one intermediate and deep pass after another converted into big YAC. Your narrative is simply false. Deebo had a 1998 Eric Moulds kinda' receiving season in 2021............but with hundreds of rushing yards added in as well.
-
It's not about the players. Nobody was lamenting them cutting John Brown specifically.......he was in decline........as was Sanders of course.......but the issue was replacing speed from 2019-2020 seasons.......with a lack of it. It was a mistake because they weren't as successful in the regular season. They had a golden opportunity to gain home field advantage throughout the playoffs.........and totally f*cking blew it in a stretch of 3 losses in 5 games where they scored 15, 10 and 9 points. So they ended up on the road in the divisional round.........after playing the game at home in 2020.........and subsequently didn't advance as far as they had in 2020. Maybe you think they can run back the desperation mode offense that they went into after the Monday night debacle at home versus NE...........but running Josh Allen 10 times per game for 20 games to keep the defense on its heels is not a sustainable full season plan.

The top 3 possibilities that drafting Breece Hall in round 1 open up: 1. Taking the ball out of Josh Allen's hands more. 2. Keeping the RB's as a group from getting into a rhythm by dividing carries even further. 3. Potentially lowering the production per play from the alternative of handing it off to the very productive Devin Singletary. I understand that Hall tested well but he didn't have a better college career rushing the football than Devin Singletary and neither were exceptional pass catchers. Singletary's NFL career 4.7 yards per carry is not going to be easy to substantially upgrade from. For reference, the revered Johnathon Taylor has a career 5.3 ypc.........just a half yard per carry more.........and that's a high end result. The odds are actually much greater that Hall will produce less ypc than Singletary..........because most highly drafted RB's do.
-
I'm sure that RB's can be tempting.........that's what low hanging fruit does.......but actually pulling the trigger when you know it's probably going to make you look stupid in a few years is another matter. Common sense has to reign. Most hilarious example of a Bills GM not being willing to pull that trigger on a RB was John Butler in 1996 when he declared he would be "dancing and wiggling'" if Texas A&M star RB Leeland McElroy surprisingly fell to the Bills pick. McElroy did fall to the Bills pick. Butler instead chose the less high profile WR Eric Moulds. McElroy went a few picks later and was a bust.

Sometimes the best lessons you can learn are from incompetent bosses. I will believe Beane learned nothing from observing Dave Gettlenutz antiquated ways and uses a 1st round chip on a runnin'bak when I see it.

I will reiterate: Depth of average reception (aka ybr): Diggs 8.7 Samuel 8.3 YAC per reception Diggs 3.2 Samuel 10 So about the same depth but more than 3x the YAC. Samuel is just difficult to bring down after at the catch.........Diggs is difficult to stop until the catch point........but not good enough to be above average at it in the Bills offense(league average YAC is 3.4). Calling more screens to a guy like McKenzie........who is your 4th or 5th best receiver and only a threat to catch shorter passes........can help but isn't much of a solution. There is no element of surprise......they can squat on his routes.........and he isn't a contact balance runner and he doesn't have elite speed. The reason why the screens they threw to John Brown were so successful was because teams had to respect him getting over the top of the defense.
-
No, I'm 100% correct. The Chiefs have prioritized speed because of their style of offense and their "day 1" confidence in Mahomes making accurate throws. The Bills play a different style and the offense was originally designed to prevent Allen from making mistakes. Last year their lack of YAC talent burned them. As I said at the time.........sacrificing speed for Emmanuel Sanders was a mistake. They didn't use it a lot but John Brown had a few great WR screen plays in key moments.......game breakers versus the Ravens and Seahawks........it can be part of the Bills offense but it won't be Stef Diggs or Gabe Davis doing it..........that's not their game.
-
Oh I understand the Bills offense. But the players they have had really aren't cut out to be YAC guys either. They've focused on route runners and for a while they really didn't want Allen throwing the ball over the middle that much. As you said......lot's of comebacks and sideline routes that really helped keep Allen out of trouble as he developed. That approach worked but also pummeled the receiving corps in 2020........all the passes caught flat footed, followed by body slams from opposing DB's took a toll on the Bills WR corps in 2020. Last season, their passing attack was much less effective. Teams took advantage of the Bills not having YAC talent..........prime example was the Jaguars game where they were DYING for someone to catch a short pass and do something with it and found no takers. As a result Allen's yards per pass attempt fell from a very good 7.9 in 2020 to a not-good, Tyrod-Taylor-esque 6.8 in 2021. You see.......there is a lot of space between "not having YAC in mind" and being the absolute worst YAC team in the NFL. It's inexcusable when you have a QB who can make throws that are impossible for all but 2-3 other QB's. I think we can all agree that any limitations that they have tried to work around should no longer apply to Josh Allen. He seemed to find his deep ball command late last year........he worked hard on accuracy on in-breaking routes........he can be trusted to use all parts of the field and throw with enough command to lead receivers safely and actually "design plays with YAC in mind". It's time to integrate some YAC talent into the equation that can do that.

Would be nice to get Greg Rousseau-like production. Rousseau hit a rookie wall as a pass rusher.........the difference between his play early in the season in KC when he had that great interception.......versus in the playoffs was literally enough to decide both games. But that's exactly why it's foolish to rely on rookies to address your biggest needs on a championship roster. Fans expecting 20 games of contest changing play from pick #25 are asking A WHOLE LOT more of the pick than they can reasonably expect. And that shouldn't be the objective of a 1st round pick..........that should be too find a long term asset at a position you would have to pay $20M-$30M aav to get on the open market 3-5 years down the road. Franchise building blocks. But Rousseau was actually also really good.........almost the exception.........he lead all NFL defensive lineman in total run stops despite only playing 49% of his teams snaps.

Correct, Tight End University. Sometimes referred to as "College". I think Dawson is the one in the blue jacket.
-
Yeah the Niners would first have to see Davis as the less risky but still high ceiling WR option for their veteran contending team and young QB. As opposed to whomever is left at pick 10. And also that Deebo would prefer not to go to another Shanahan type system.......or a losing organization with a young, unproven QB situation. We really don't know what's going on there because it doesn't make a lot of sense that he wouldn't just sign back with SF if they promised not to use him like a RB the way they did in the second half of 2021. If he were willing to play out his deal elsewhere and still contend for a SB.........playing with Josh Allen would be appealing. It will be very interesting to see if guys like Deebo, AJ Brown and McClauren can leverage their dissatisfaction into new deals or if teams draw the line on these 3 year vets.
-
Yeah it's a given that they will get a first rounder in 2023 out of the deal...........that's the whole point of moving back for the Giants. The only reason that #25 + 2023 #1 + Edmunds has a chance in hell of being enough to move that far up is the perception of some that the 2023 first round will be much better than the 2022 version and that the Giants want that capital in case they have to trade picks to move up and draft a QB in what promises to be a much better QB draft. Edmunds alone doesn't move the needle much in a trade.........even if it turns out that Schoen was his biggest champion within the Bills.

10-6 Nice sweep of Cleveland with a 10-2 win. Big game for LeMahieu......3-3.........though one was aided by a bonehead play by Mercado. Pitching continues to be the story. Cole looked good. Almost another shutout. Their fan-fighting antics yesterday seemed to have an impact on Cleveland........Mercado and Straw were a mess today. -
If Deebo is willing to play out this season without a new contract.............Gabe Davis for Deebo? Who says no? Niners would get a guy who many anticipate to break out like Samuel did last season..........and get him for two seasons. Bills get one season of a PROVEN star player in his walk year who flips the narrative about their league worst YAC ability. Case in point........Stef Diggs had 3.2 YAC/R last season........Deebo had 10 YAC/R. If it's a match made in heaven then maybe they actually do retain Deebo and just keep shuttling vet min/rookies at WR3-WR4 for the next few years. They could still later address a long term WR2 alternative with a Davis-style vertical option in the draft. Then if they traded up with the Giants they maybe turn that pick into Evan Neal and get around to doing what they said was priority #1.........protecting Josh Allen.
-
I could see them trading up with the Giants and sending them Edmunds and the Bills also getting Bradberry in what would be a salary swap with upside for the Giants. Maybe Schoen thinks Martindale could make much better use of Edmunds. But I can't see the Bills trading their 2022 and 2023 #1's to move up to draft another off-ball LB..........that would be impossibly stupid. Instead, if they trade Edmunds I can see them drafting a replacement in rounds 2-4 and then maybe bringing back AJ Klein cheap as veteran insurance.
