Two things I don't want to see in the 1st round...

Coverage and sacks do go together like peanut butter and jelly. The Bills' problem is that we have such a terrible pass rush that all the CBs in the world couldn't help our sack total. Unless we are going to be using first round and high paid corners and run the dime package all day we will continue to be exposed for our lack of pass rush. Out only real pass coverage issue in my opinion is that Poz can't cover a TE to save his life. By mid season last year we gave up a TE score every week if I am not mistaken. Look at the tape and you will see Poz getting dusted and scored on in most. We need guys that can get a whiff of the QB you will be surprised how good our CBs start looking. That being said we need to stop the run before anyone will find it necessary to pass on us. -
Was almost going to freak out over this but I counted to 10. In many cases drafting the CB would be a pretty good idea. Unfortunately for the Bills specific situation it is a terrible idea. Problems with the Bills selecting a CB that early: 1) 32nd rush defense in the league 2) 27th in sacks in the league 3) BUFFALO NEVER PAYS GOOD CBs AFTER THEIR ROOKIE CONTRACT IT UP! (If you are ok with Peterson leaving in 5 years or being traded because he wants a new contract after 2 years if he is awesome then go for it)

People Tend To Forget Last Year's Picks

I'm not sure what it is that you don't get? The best players should start. What is so complex about that concept? It is therefore reasonable to assume that if you don't start....you aren't the best. We aren't talking about QBs where one is making 5 million and the other 500,000. We are talking LBs and DL. If any of these guys were good enough to displace players in the 32nd ranked run defense they would have started and relegated a veteran to the bench or gotten them released to free up cap money. -
After watching Gruden's QB Camp ...
PDaDdy replied to HankBulloughMellencamp's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Cam Newton is absolutely nothing like Jamarcus Russel. Seriously ...nothing! Newton has a long way to go to become an NFL QB but he is a natural charismatic leader and was VERY successful at every level of college football and won a national championship. Micheal Vick, Randall Cunningham and perhaps Vince Young are better comparisons as far as his physical skills, arm and running ability go. I hate to include Vince Young as Cam has better physical gifts but Young was not a natural leader of charismatic. That being said he is a lot bigger and more durable than those guys. None of that matters though if he can't learn how to become an NFL QB. True true. You do bring up a great point. There are so many QB needy teams I think Gabbert probably will go in the top 10 to 15. Part of my point is there is a loose and unsubstantiated rule that I think I believe in. There is usually the 1 sure fire guy or the 2 candidate race. That being said you can get a guy like Josh Freeman at #17 2 years ago. Not a LOT of talk about him but he ended up being the best of the group and he was the 3rd QB to go. You can make a case for Sanchez but so Freeman has been the best imo. A similar draft where Big Ben was the 3rd QB but is probably the best of his bunch. Maybe Gabbert is that guy. I would feel a lot better picking him in the early teens than #3 overall. If he is going to be good.....I guess it doesn't matter where you get him ultimately. -

Before you get in defensive mode, I like Gabbert but I don't think he would be in the discussion anywhere near the top of the first round if Luck came out. 3rd guy off the board in the middle or end of the first? SURE! If Gabbert played at a more competitive school in a tougher conference would he really have looked as good? The level of talent he was running and throwing against would have been better as well. I am just not sure what it is that everyone sees that truly distinguishes this guy from the other QBs not named Newton. Before you say it I am not really a Newton guy. He is a gamble. He could be great if he learns how to play NFL QB. He does have absolutely EVERYTHING you could ever want in a QB except....well....being a polished QB. That guy has a LOT to learn about complex plays and reading a defense. -
Martez Wilson. We need players to hepl get this defense fixed. Maybe we'll get lucky next year.

People Tend To Forget Last Year's Picks

That is a huge point that people have been missing. These guys that we drafted last year weren't good enough to win starting positions on the worst rush defense in the entire NFL. We were 28th worst over all? I have hope for the new guys we got last year but lets keep it real. If they were that good they would have already been starters. -
I'm would disagree. Sam Bradford was a big name talked up for the 2 years prior to him being drafted. He was even discussed as the top QB before he went back for his senior year.
-
If Luck came out all the talk would be Luck and Newton. Gabbert would be a late first round afterthought likely lumped in with the Ponders, Kapernicks, Lockers and Mallets of the class.

Robert Quinn training Don Beebe's House of Speed

"Will" or do I "hope" the Bills draft Quinn? -
I think we basically agree. If you want to consider how long someone has been starting/playing as a positive you also have to look at the negative that might come with it. As I mentioned it has to be weighted accordingly. What that player looked like 4 years ago has much much less relevance than what they did 1 or 2 years ago no doubt. Never said otherwise. What they did as a junior does have a lot of relevance but not as much as what they did as a senior. Miller had a lot more sacks as a 4-3 DE in his junior year. That is a big positive. He also has looked very bad against the run as a junior and senior which is a pretty important negative considering our biggest problem is stopping the run. As a pass rusher I think he has the potential to be great. Maybe like Jason Taylor and some others he can develop into a run stopper. As some experts have suggested despite his obvious pass rushing skills he might not be the best fit for us. OLB isn't the only position defending the run for our defense but it is a component. If we got Miller we would need to some how vastly improve as a run defense in other areas and let Miller do what he is good at.
-
2009 was Miller's Junior Season. As a pass rush specialist it was by far his best year playing DE in a 4-3. According to you that is relevant which is the point. Just clips not his entire body of work. That being said I also don't agree with throwing out anything beyond 2 years. If people make a big deal out of someone being a 4 year starter/player then all 4 years count not just the most recent. Older tape should be considered and weighted lower accordingly but not ignored. If you don't value being a 3 or 4 year starter too highly then I guess you can consider 2 year wonders.
-
Ah. I guess the analyst thought that that game was indicative of his question marks not the totality of his college career. I wasn't making the leap that they were basing their entire draft assessment off of clips from one game in 2009.
-
If you don't have a problem with Miller's 2009 highlight as well as lowlight videos ....nothing. You seemed to have a problem with a video I posted from 2009 against Texas and Colt McCoy.
-
I'm saying you look at a player's entire body of work which includes 2009 as well as 2010 as Dank posted in #70. Why value 4 year non one year wonder players and not look at anything beyond their last year? you=???
-
You are being ridiculous. If you include the off years of one year wonders or include the year, or the lack there of, for someone that was suspended why is it out of bounds for a 4 year player? I really like Miller just not as much as Quinn. That being said that video doesn't give me a good feeling at all that Miller will help solve our #1 problem which is being last in the league defending the run. It's always a little unfair looking at low lights in a vacuum but hey, at least it was a video where Miller was the focus AND from THIS year. Nice find Dank.
-
You mean like the game tape on Quinn?
-
Ah gotcha, so you mean from 2009 when Miller put up his best year with 17 sacks.
-
Colt McCoy was in the NFL for the 2010 season.

What is the BIGGGEST problem with the Bills, on or off field
PDaDdy replied to San-O's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I hear that man. Inability to identify talent in the draft is a HUGE problem as well. I guess we could say problem 1A and 1B however you stack them up. In combination they have produced the product we see on the field today. Imo this goes beyond the Levy/Jauron era. -

PDaDdy replied to San-O's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Those are some great points but there is one other that is so simple and basic it disgusts me when I think about it. Buffalo's #1 problem is not keeping talent. Plain and simple. When we do actually get lucky and draft or develop a good player we never hold on to them. We let them walk and go on to excel and go to pro bowls and other accolades elsewhere. Some players you can't and shouldn't keep (Nate Clements) others you should (list too long to mention). Good teams keep their talent and acquire more. Bad teams refuse to pay market value for their talent and instead grossly overpay for mediocrity. -
I like your style Era. Here is a Von Miller "highlight" clip. I think it shows the exact concerns that you have. Taking himself out of the play. Lack of effectiveness against the run. We need to see the warts too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoQII6vrPHE You mean like floating a Ponder highlight video out there in a thread called "found some tape of Quinn"? LAME!!!!
-
Nice dose of realism Dank. There are a bunch of youtube videos out there where Quinn is actually the focus. Ponder is the focus here. This Ponder highlight reel wouldn't be a highlight reel if Quinn or any other defender for that matter were draped all over him. People and their hidden agendas man. Gets tiring like people aren't smart enough to see through the smear campaign by people who go after Quinn in thread after thread and strongly support who they believe is the "popular" consensus safe pick at #3. The original poster starts a thread and calls it video of Quinn but in reality it's a Ponder high light reel????? Misleading subject and topic. A moderator should change the subject to Ponder highlight film. BOOOOOOOOO!

I would hate to see us use an early pick on a TE. To me that is one of those pieces you add later after everything else is set. If the right guy is there at the right time I guess you draft em though. I don't know how often a Vernon Davis comes along. You could make a very strong case for a QB we liked or an OT though no doubt.
