There should be a national dialogue in getting back to work
Magox replied to Magox's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
That's fine. Ultimately it will just end up being an unforced utterance that he often times does. We are on a political board, and we comment on these things on a play-by-play basis, that's what is done here. I have not hidden the fact that I am not a fan of how he communicates some things. I like his actions for the most part, I like the way he slaps down the media but there are things that I dislike about him. As I was saying, he's not going to take action. This was just his ego speaking. He saw Cuomo making a power play and he reacted. And he reacted in an unflattering way in regards to this "total control" issue. There are plenty of conservatives and libertarians who are not in agreement with this statement and I'm sure that his advisers including Meadows are telling him, to back off this in his own way. Pretty much what I believe. He won't do anything about it. It was just a stupid thing that he said.. -

Trump actually made the case to not shut down each particular states and cited "Federalism" and the "constitution". You remember that, right? That came out of his mouth on multiple occasions. Now he is saying he has "total control". Let's just at least agree that he is not consistent with what he says. As I said earlier, it's ok to not agree with what the person you support 100% or 90% of the time or even most of the time. Just shows that we have the ability to have a position that we believe in and that in this particular circumstance we disagree with the person you support. I think we all know that he's not going to "open" things up. This was just his narcissism speaking, he wants to be the one who says that the country is open for business. He wants the credit for it and when he saw Cuomo making this power move of gathering all the North Eastern governors, he lashed out and made this statement of "total" control. Or that he has the authority to do so. He will back off of this in his own way. -

Partisan issue that I'm desperately hunting for??? You should hope that the Trump doesn't even entertain such an idea. -

If he didn't use it to shut down the country and left it up to the states to do so, then using it to open it up would be entirely inconsistent with his policies. If it got that far, the lawsuits would be coming out and his support would crater. It's ok to not agree with everything the president does. -

Trump is going to need to backtrack in his own way about this "Total" control statement he made. As I have been saying since the beginning of this thread, the Federal Government can only provide federal guidance, which has a lot of weight but it's guidance none the less. It's up to the state to lift the stay-at-home orders, then the companies to open up shop and ultimately up to the employees to show up to work. That was an unforced error on Trump's part. Probably needs to backtrack in his own way relatively soon. The Libertarian minded people's support who are inclined to back him will erode with this approach. Trump was already beginning to backtrack during the presser but if he continues with this "total" control issue, it will backfire. -

Ok, if you are talking about the messaging from the top down. Then I agree with you. That was Trump's biggest mistake, how he downplayed it. But if you are referring to the substance, then I don't see how anyone else could have altered the response from what the CDC, Fauci, Medical Experts or the NIH. -

I'm not talking about what Trump wants. I was responding to Kay. And I am certain that without that disastrous Anderson Cooper interview, that they would still be running a heated campaign against each other. -

Biden would have won S.C without the Anderson Cooper interview. That's not what I'm saying. Oh nevermind. -

He was beginning to edge up to the high 30's and a gradual acceptance of him potentially being the nominee. If anyone is going to be honest about what happened, it's not as if Biden did something to make everyone coalesce around him at light speed. It was the fear of Bernie winning the nomination. That fear would have still existed without the Anderson Cooper interview but what that interview did was it crystalized that fear. Without that Anderson Cooper interview, the speed and rate of how everyone coalesced around Biden wouldn't have happened the way it played out. It truly was a perfect storm of events that happened. -

No doubt that the mainstream media and establishment Democrats were desperate to get Bernie out. And it was quite impressive the speed of how they all coalesced around Biden for the S.C primary. But something that isn't talked about enough is what truly doomed Bernie. Bernie was on a path to win the nomination. Biden was struggling and Bloomberg was the new hope. As we know Bloomberg bombed in that first debate and from that performance on he never stood a chance. Klobuchar and Buttigieg could never gain any traction with the African American crowd. It was looking all but certain that Bernie was going to be the man. Democrats and the mainstream were getting desperate. There were some mainstream Democrats and even some in the media that were beginning to warm to the idea that "Maybe Bernie could win". And then the Bernie - Anderson Cooper interview happened. He complimented Castro's education policies. All the fears of Bernie being a communist sympathizer all came to a head. Florida Democrats were denouncing him left and right, the prospects of winning Florida were next to nil with Bernie were becoming quite apparent. And when given an opportunity to clarify, he really couldn't do it in a way to assuage the fears of many Democrats. Then the Clyburn endorsement came and the rest was history. If Bernie hadn't done that interview, he would still be competing hard against Biden to this day. -

So you're saying that the CDC, NIH, Fauci and medical experts throughout the country were waiting for Trump to give them the green light to begin working on this? Is that what you're implying? -

Can you please point to me something, where "thousands have died" due to lack of PPE, masks or ventilators. I would like to see that myself. I haven't even seen that from the mainstream media and you know they'd be all over that. -

I think this more than anything is what prompted Trump's tweet. Which would be an entirely inconsistent position than Trump's hesitance to not enforce a nation wide stay-at-home order. I'm guessing Trump is fuming right now, he sees this for what it is, a powerplay by Democratic governors to "lead the way". The Governor of Rhode Island essentially just said and I'm paraphrasing here: "We governors have been leading the way for safety and now it's only appropriate that we lead the way to getting our economy going". I expect today's briefer to be extremely contentious and I think Trump is going to make a big deal of reopening the economy. Truth be told, Trump has been the one leading the charge about reopening the economy, even though Cuomo you could see in his briefers has been very eager to do so as well. -

Interesting meeting of the governors led by Cuomo. Almost seems like a power play of sorts. -

Truth be told, I think this is his narcissism speaking. He wants to be the one who calls the shots in making this decision. But it's not his decision, I mean it could be if he exerted himself. But even then you can't compel companies to open up or for that matter employees to show up for work. I am fairly certain that it will be what I have been saying for a while. Federal Government will provide guidelines on opening up the workforce and each state will be on their own timeline. If he thought that a state was not going along with the program, maybe in that circumstance he would exert himself. I think that is politically fraught with danger. Then again, it's hard to understand Trump's political calculations and often times his unconventional way of doing things works for him. -

I'm one of them. The only way that Trump can do as he said in the tweet is if he exerts himself over each governors decision. He didn't do it for the shut down and I don't believe he would do it for them to lift their stay-at-home orders, unless he believed that they should be. It doesn't make any sense whatsoever to have the same policy in New York as North Dakota. It's not my preference, at all. I wish he would be more of a straight shooter and it certainly works against him in some aspects. With that said, speaking for myself of course, I judge people more so based off of their actions over their words. -
