  1. Karlos is a rookie who is relatively new to the position. He's almost the same size as Boobie and Bryce, and the fastest of the bunch. The Bills should have cut Brown, promoted Karlos to Boobie's spot at RB & ST, kept Fred as RB, and made Boobie the deactivated RB.

Because if you're gonna keep an RB whose a Beast on ST, it makes so much sense to dress him in street clothes on game day?

Thanks for that link to the Robert Quinn piece; for this non-player it was one of the most helpful / insightful X's and O's discussions I've ever seen. But it really didn't contain anything on blitz pickups, did it? Any of you experts care to weigh in on whether Hopeful (classic moniker, btw) is correct on this? Seems relevant to the discussion of Karlos...and for that matter, Shady, too.

    Hey, Red, you're welcome.

It sort of falls into football history. Traditional role of the fullback when every team had one was to pound the rock (get the difficult yards between tackles), blast the holes for the RB, and pass-block. Traditional role of the TE was to function as an extra lineman or pass protect as well as catch passes. So it's sort of implied by saying Roman likes to keep 2 RB (1 RB and 1 FB) and 2 TE. One of the TE is almost always broken off to the side of the QB in perfect position to pick up a blitz.

But of course that doesn't speak to his pass-protection expectations of RBs vs FB and TE, so I'll be interested to know what other folks think.

Agreed. I have a feeling Indy is going to throw a lot of passes and get ahead of us for awhile in sundays game, and we'll have no choice but to sling it ourselves later in the game, which would mean less workload for the rb's.

OK, this is one of my pet peeves - teams who get behind with plenty of time to catch up by running, and who abandon the run and start slinging it when they could just stick with their game plan, trust their D to adjust, and keep pounding. Yes Marrone I'm talking about you last year

    He's only #2 because of Whaley's ego.

    /sarcasm

That f*@!ing idiot Whaley! How dare he squander a valuable 5th round draft pick on an RB when we had a great 34 year old RB with plenty left in his legs! He should have waited until Fred was finished, and THEN scramble around to draft whoever was there that year, with a decent 1st or 2nd round pick or something! (Then we could all have something else to critique him for)

  2. I've supported EJ for what I expected from him. He's ready to be a mid level QB at this point(Tannehill-esque). He can be more IMO. I think his time with the scout team will help him and add to the coaching staffs conviction that they were right in not trading him/cutting him.

    Again JMO.

Well, for whatever it's worth, I share your opinion.

I was struck by something Roman said in an interview, something to the effect of "testing" the offense line by not making adjustments against the D, so that in a game with adjustments it will be easier. Rex has said some similar things about the D, testing the DBs instead of giving them help as would be done on game day.

I think in OTAs and early TC they saw EJ was a project, got the flick that he hadn't really had decent coaching, and said "OK, we'll develop him over the spring/summer and see. If he improves, we'll keep at it, if he doesn't, *snip snip snip*. I think EJ has been with the 3's against our 1's D because that's where he got what he needed most - having to read and interpret a complex D and react properly to pressure.

I think the QB have their roles: TT is the starter, EJ is the long-term backup plan if TT doesn't have all that after a decent series of games or goes down with injury, and Cassel is the capable vet who will do everything he can to help TT out, who can be game-ready with minimal snaps during the week and can come in mid-game if needed.

EJ just sounds too calm and positive for a guy who is buried deep on a team's depth chart. He sounds like a guy who has a role and knows what it is.

    But I could be wrong.

  3. I don't know how Belichick still has a job. Sorry.

Mmmm, maybe 'cuz his boss Kraft is one of thes "Just Win, Baby!" anything is justified if you do, kind of guys?

The sad thing is, Belicheat*** may be one of the greatest coaches of all time. But once 3 types of cheating are uncovered (signal videotaping, stealing play sheets from locker rooms, having opponents radios go dead on critical plays), it leaves unanswered what kind of cheating was just never caught or uncovered?

  4. Please don't include me in "B'lo fans" who were upset there would be no place to go (i was not worried about that in the least). My uproar is that we cut out second best RB and best pass blocker who was making a meager salary (by NFL standards) in the year that we've been told we're going for it .

    Reddog,

I understand your evaluation and you have a right to your opinion. I think the point stands that in the coaches evaluation, FredEx was no longer the 2nd best RB, and while Jackson was undoubtedly the best pass-blocking RB, Roman's offense expects more pass-blocking to fall on the TE and FB. Is Fredex better than Felton and Mulligan at pass blocking?

One might also keep in mind that, except for the high ankle sprain that put Turbin on IR, the Seahawks would not have had a place for FredEx at #2, and also, they are reportedly paying him vet minimum.

  5. Karlos is a monster runner. I am confident he will be good when he gets the football.

My biggest question with him is, will he read pressure properly and pick up blitzers anywhere near as well as Fred Jackson did? That remains a question that could end up haunting the Bills if he is not good at it.

I think Karlos is going to improve the Bills' rushing attack a lot which is what this coaching staff seems to be all about. So I am glad he is here.

I could be wrong, but I think the responsibility for picking up blitzers may fall more on the TE and FB in Roman's 2 TE/2 back sets. Roman is known for using 2 TE and a FB

Kind of a nice article about it here

  6. There have been plenty of instances of bad decsisions, but until recently anything that hasn't worked out has been attributed to Marrone or Buddy Nix.

:flirt: We listen to the same media and read the same board here? I've seen plenty of Whaley-blamin'. Not being unanimous doesn't mean it didn't happen.

It really shouldn't be a debate that the coach and what he wants influences the player grading by the GM and his staff and the draft board - as it should. Thus we had CJ Spiller and TJ Graham under Gailey, three big lurching behemouth OLmen under Marrone, and so forth.

But any GM makes mistakes, too.

  7. @ChrisBrownBills: The #Bills have re-signed QB Matt Cassel. TE Nick O'Leary released to make room on roster. More at http://t.co/tgttAMwjdw.

Well shiver me timbers and bite me a barnacle, Dealer Doug strikes again.

Any word on what his salary is?

I'm pleased, actually, because I thought under the circs it made us a better team to keep a vet who knows the playbook. I just thought, once he was cut, he would go elsewhere for more money than we were likely willing to pay.

  8. @ByTimGraham: Fred Jackson explains why he chose Seahawks over Patriots http://t.co/00jzImy9Ei

Freddy is spot-on in his analysis of Belichek.

I was somewhat amused by this:

"Marshawn was a huge factor," Jackson said. "We talk to each other three times a week.

"The chance to come out there was something we both wanted. We talked about it back in March when everything went down. We made it happen."

I think part of the uproar of B'lo fans was the thought of Freddy being cut just before the season and having no place to go, but it sounds as though he had his exit strategy in place and his next job awaiting him.

  9. Link to Fred's full presser:

    http://www.seahawks.com/video/2015/09/07/fred-jackson-first-press-conference-seattle

He doesn't look or sound pissed, but his comments speak volumes.

Classy presser from a classy guy. LOL at some of his comments, when asked what kind of guy Marshawn Lynch is: "Marshawn's actions speak for what kind of guy he is, He's a big kid!" "He'll be over at my house playing with my kids, and I'll definitely treat him like he is one of them".

Anyone hear yet what Fred's contract is with the Hawks##?

If he can teach Marshawn to give a presser like that, he'll be worth double whatever they're paying him

I wonder if he'll bring his family to Seattle and buy a house - postage stamp in Seattle costs more than 4 br 4 bath in B'lo

##in honor of their actions in recruiting and signing Fred Jackson, I shall henceforth refer to the Seattle Seasnakes as the Seattle Seahawks

  10. Interesting D&C article linked on TBD home page

I was just reflecting on what a huge difference the ownership makes. We may or may not win - so many unknown factors. But no one can say that in bringing in Roman and his offense, we didn't bring in the personnel to execute his offense. (Whether all the personnel pan out is another question)

Remember when we brought in Chan Gailey and George Edwards, Edwards wanted to switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4, and around the league and the press were scoffing because "they don't have the personnel for it". We were carrying DLmen like John McCargo, Kellen Heard, and Torell Troup, and LB Aaron Maybin and Akin Ayodele. In changing the D, we just announced the change - there really wasn't a coordinated, full-press effort to draft and sign FA suitable to execute it.

What a difference this year in the approach, with a full-court press to upgrade through both FA signings and draft at TE, Fullback, OL, QB, and the speedbird WR.

  11. Terrible Tyrod Taylor. So terrible that he broke a bunch of school records and won the ACC.

    Typical Prisco. We'll see.

That's a play on Triple T "Terrible Terry Tate", Office Linebacker commercials, that were popular in the early 2000s, right? LOL, I loved those.

Maybe we could bring in the real Triple T and change any lingering Lifer culture in the Bills FO?

  12. I don't care if TT comes out in Nick Cannon's AGT diamond shoes just so long as he gets the balls to the receivers. I can't understand why anyone cares what mouth guard he's going to wear.

Didn't Tyrods camp refute that story?

I call B.S. on this guy. Anybody old enough to be a 50-year fan wouldn't know Public Enemy from One Direction...

Not true if you've got kids or grandkids the right age

  13. I hear Matt Cassel is available.

Seriously, could we bring him back after week one on a non-guaranteed contract that is significantly less than what he was scheduled to make before the cut?

We could try but 1) the odds are in his favor of someone with an injury calling him and offering him a bigger payday. I would imagine his agent counseling him to sit tight and be patient 2) hardly the way to build goodwill and elicit a guy's best effort - not sure we should

  14.

This was a weird part for me too. I took it as "all we really have to show for our last 3 first round picks is Sammy, because EJ is a backup/doesn't play." I think that's what he meant, but he worded it terribly.

I agree that's what he probably meant, but it's strange reasoning. I mean, if our 2nd round pick from 2014, Kouandjio, is a backup/doesn't play does it mean we effectively spent 2 2nd round picks on Miller?

The first rounder in 2013 got traded down,, which led to EJ PLUS Kiko in the second round with the extra pick. Kiko got traded for McCoy. So out of the 2013, 2014, and 2015 first round picks the Bills got EJ, McCoy, and Watkins.

In my opinion the jury is still out on EJ. I suppose you could say it's also out on how the other two will work out, but I don't think on the face of it this was a bad outcome.

    Good point Dr K.

  15. i know we are a little obsessed on here and rag on the national writers who are uninformed about every little detail... But I found a lot of inaccuracies in the article. Mostly that they did little to improve the OL. Two new guards and all new coaches?

Most would describe a 3rd round pick and the FA signing of a guy 31 other teams didn't want "little"

The Bills are banking on that, plus development of the previous draft's 2nd and 7th round "sleeper" pick as being "enough"

PS please don't shoot the messenger - I'm just pointing out how we'd probably see it if we were assessing a team we were about to play. "They had one of the worst OLs in football last year and all they did was sign a guy who'd been out of football for 18 months and draft a guard in the 3rd round? Pfui! We will feast on their QB and smother their run game like blankets! BWAHAHAHAHA!

  16. Well, close -- the 2014 Chiefs had the 2nd best defense in football. They went 9-7. As I mentioned above, Rex's 2009 Jets had the best defense in football, and they finished 9-7. And the answer is: A. Alex Smith. B. Mark Sanchez.

So, basically, the difference for the Bills is whether Tyrod Taylor (and his backup) are better than Alex Smith (and his backup) or Mark Sanchez (and his backup)

  17. Horrible analysis. Another guy who sat in his basement and wrote something without watching any camp or exhibition games....

Eh. I don't think he's that far off the national mainstream, which has been saying we have the worst QB situation in the league for months. The main thrust of his logic runs something like this:

    1) These days, you can't win by running. What you need to win in the NFL is a very very good QB

    2) The Bills don't have a very very good QB. They have bust EJ Manuel and dark-horse 4 year backup Tyrod Taylor who didn't have a good completion percentage in college

    3) Therefore the Bills will not win, and in fact may wind up in the cellar

    Additional points:

    4) Rex Ryan went 4-12 with inadequate QB play last year, therefore he may go 4-12 this year

    5) The Bills tried to improve the run game with McCoy, but he's already hurt and they didn't bring in flashy-dashy OL FA to match him

The counterpoints to the above are:

    1) Two of the most successful modern-day teams, the Seasnakes and the '9ers, are actually run-heavy teams

    2) The Bills traded for the best servicable vet on the market in Cassel, then signed the best dark-horse FA vet they could find. They set up a competition and picked the best man and the best #2

    3) The OL may have improved enough with replacement of both guards and improvement the RT via camp competition - how's Iupati working out in 'Zona? There's also Felton and Mulligan to help out and blocking skill has become a "thing" for Bills TE.

    Additional points:

    4) If McCoy can't go, the Bills have 2 backup RB who should get the job done behind an adequate OL just based on last year's performance, and a promising rookie. They may not be flashy, but 222223.34 YPA moves the chains, Baby, and has the added benny of keeping the other guy's offense off the field. It's hard to score if you're sitting down

    5) Greg Roman went pretty far with what (now) may look like less than adequate QB play

All I can say is that time will tell.

I don't follow his logic re: the Bills using 3 1st round picks and coming away with Sammy Watkins. Is he saying that EJ Manuel is a bust therefore the first round we used on him plus the 2 1sts we used on Sammy amount to using 3 picks on Sammy? That's kind of strange logic, the sequitor is that any time a team has a 1st round pick who isn't all that and a bag of chips, the next 1st round draftee effectively cost them 2 picks, which is just weird. Even top 1st round draft picks only become instant difference makers about 50% of the time and decent starters within a year or 2 an additional 20-30% (depends on your def. of decent starter)
