  1. If you want a good chuckle, read through this thread of how the game played out from the Colts' fans perspective.

  2.

This is correct and the thing is - the Bills have the personnel to do this. They were really forcing tight coverage windows yesterday and it took some perfect passes from Luck to sustain the two drives that they were successful in. Do the same thing to the Pats, and with Dareus back they can fold the pocket like an aluminum can.

Back to the offense - I'm still griping about not hitting Watkins on his crossing routes over the middle. There were several times when he was running free. Those kinds of plays with YAC move the chains and, while you can't really complain about the result, it should've been a lot less close than it was. Get the ball to your best playmaker and let him work please, especially against the Pats' secondary which is even worse than the Colts...

Actually, wasn't this the knock on Taylor in TC, that he wasn't good at those intermediate routes over the middle?

    Yes, it's absolutely fair.

There's also the context of the game plan to consider (not saying you didn't/aren't). Teams that like to pound the ball are sometimes the nova-cane style; just keep hitting the opposing front 7 as hard as you can until they leak, at which time you hit them for a big gain. That's one of the reasons that Karlos Williams was able to break off a big run for a TD at the end of the first half IMO.

It remains true, however, that opening bigger holes more consistently is important for this OL. I did notice that they had most of their success running from a 2-TE set, but that's pretty common when playing a 30 front because the edge defenders are wider and set further away from the OL, which allows them to crash down more easily.

Well there's two sides. One is what I told my kid over and over, she and her friends would be all "if I hit that free throw at the beginning of the 2nd half we would have won". But if you change a play, or take out a play, it's a different ballgame. You just can't say that. So I don't buy that "if you take out those two big runs, our run game sucked" stuff.

The other is that Roman is well-known, like a chessmaster, for running a relatively ineffective play a couple times and then, when the D is content with their pattern recognition and keys on what they expect, giving them the same look then running a different play from the same formation for a big gain. I couldn't get the whole game, so I don't know if that was going on.

Bottom line though, all seem to agree that our OL needs to get better and TT needs to take a hard look at whether he was leaving plays on the field with an open Sammy.

  3.

    3) Tyrod's ball security. I know, I know, it was raining. I know, I know, it was very heads-up of him to recover the fumble and knock the batted pass to the ground before a defender nabbed it. But man, hang onto the rock and don't throw at opposing linemen in the first place.

Tyrod did not "throw" the ball at a opposing offensive linemen.....there was a blocker that had the assignment of getting the defender's hands down and he couldnt do it. This happens to all QBs but is especially going to happen to a 6' quarterback so we are going to see some of that......in fact Tyrod showed excellent ball security by have the awareness to KNOCK the ball down and kill the play.

On the handoff....it was raining...it was wet....and we dont know if this was the center's fault or his on the exchange. In any case Tyrod's ball security the whole game was pretty excellent.....zero picks to Lucks 2.

    5) Communication errors or whatever it was that left receivers uncovered. Get it straight before next week, guys. Brady was watching, taking notes, and naming names.

This was a pretty dominant effort by the defense.....especially considering we were rotating safeties and corners into the game because of injury.

Things I saw that I liked:

    1) poise and vision from Tyrod. He didn't look like a guy starting his first game. He looked like It. Keep it up, Tyrod.

    2) Karlos Williams. He hit the hole hard, even when there wasn't much hole. Stay healthy, and he's got a future IMO. That combination of size and speed is hard to defend.

    3) All the passes to McCoy. He and Tyrod must be saying "I think this is the start of a beautiful relationship". Free Shady from the need for a run blocking line, and stand back.

    4) Very solid tackling. We looked, for a change, like a well-coached team in that regard

    5) Nickell Robey. All game. But especially when Andrew Luck was wearing him. Brady would also look very nice in that outfit (the Nickell Robey look) though I'm not fussy - Brady would look great wearing anyone in a Bills uniform, provided he's down on the ground making that "uuuuuuuhhhh" noise Bruce Smith loved.

An interesting difference between Luck and Brady.......Lucky will shake pressure and hits off like it never happened (although he wasnt last night especially in the 1st half) while these things really affect Brady badly. They still have to play the game but I STILL believe that this defense knows exactly how to defend Brady. We just need our offense to score enough points to win.

John, with all respect...once the blocker did not execute, Taylor DID throw at an opposing lineman. We're all aware of his height challenge, I imagine he is, our coaches are, opposing coaches are, opposing lineman are. That is exactly why it's so critical for him to be aware of, and not throw at, guys who have the chance to batt balls they might not reach from another QB.

Yes, overall, as I said, Tyrod looked like IT. But the weather will get colder, the ball will be slippery and hard to hang on to, and evidently we are a bit shaky at center. So those are legitimate points for improvement - do you really disagree?

Regarding Brady: it's a point repeated so often that it's become a truism that the way to affect Brady is to hit him hard and often. IMO it's not really true. Brady could care less if he gets pressure providing he successfully dumps off to Gronk or Edelman and gets 5-7 yds out of a down. He'll nibble opponents to death all day like that, waiting for his receivers to break some long YAC. (Look it up - Brady gets something like half his credited passing yards as YAC, near the top of the league at that.) He's the classic "live by the Blitz, die by the Blitz" QB. The way to beat Brady is to cover the middle like a blanket, take away his outlets and keep him contained, and then pressure. He gets rattled when he can't execute his plans and is forced into coverage sacks by pressure. The textbook Brady defense was the NYJ playoff game in 2010. The reason more teams don't repeat it is, it's hard to execute. Again, JMO.

  4. you gameplan for a specific opponent based on their strengths and weaknesses, I think the goal of each game is to win first and not worry about 'exposing' your playbook. And just because you use a play today doesn't mean you have to use it next week. This really isn't that complicated.

Right, win first....up 24 points late in the 3rd quarter, Check! First things first, but then fine, move on to second things - like the less you show, the less intel on you the next opponents get

I haven't read all of these, but what those I read seem to amount to is:

    1) no one can stop Mr Quick Shot Brady* and his arsenal of receivers, which is far too potent for any mere football team to defend

    2) no one watched the game. They consider Tyrod Taylor an "oooh, shiney" novelty whose glitz will wear off, not a legit NFL QB who can survive inside the pocket

We'll see. Mr Quick Shot against Mr Big Stuff?

It is definitely interesting reading it from their side. My favorite is when they say they hope that the AFCE is as good as they look because it will be "good for the Pats*" to give them more of a "sense of urgency" during the season.

Yeah, I enjoyed that too. Arrogance personified. But hey, Dizzy Dean said it: "Ain't braggin' if you done it". It's on us to prove them wrong.

I'll be interested to see what their OL is really capable of. On the one hand, lots of rookies. On the other hand, somehow Belichek*** and his coaching team*** manage to eke great play out of nothing on OL for years, helped out by Brady* (and perhaps, the opponents play calls?)

I just want to see Rex and our coaching team "on top of" the Patriots*** Bag O Rule-skirting Tricks.

And if some Bills fan electronics wizard figured out how to leak crowd noise into the Patriots*** headsets, well that would be cool too. Can you imagine? "We have a complaint - we're hearing crowd noise in our headsets" "Ah, Mr Belicheck*** sir, that's because the crowd is extremely loud. We're all hearing it despite our headsets" "No seriously! It's coming through our headsets! We can't hear ourselves think!" "Ah, Sir, this is Ralph Wilson Stadium. No one can hear themselves think!" "You don't understand....ah, Forget it!"

  6. They think the Colts outplayed us yesterday, giving them the number 11 overall performance rating yesterday. Meanwhile, the Bills were saddled with a MINUS 3.5 overall rating, driven mainly by a 22nd ranked DEFENSIVE performance of MINUS 3.2! Oh and Tyrod Taylor was a MINUS 1 when running the ball?

Disclaimer: I am not a fan of PFF, my son has a subscription.

    Go Bills.

I do not have a PFF subscription and know little about them. Can anyone who does explain this?

I mean, the bottom line is, the Colts LOST. Do you think Luck feels all warm and fuzzy thinking he "outplayed us"?

Is this something like the folks who were posting about a "moral defeat" after we beat NE last season in the last game?

  7. You wouldn't wear those? They look comfy. And if anyone has earned the right to be smug I'd say Brady has. It's up to the Bills to prove to this guy that things have changed.

    This.

Bills 2ndary without McKelvin and now, very likely, Corey Graham. Brady* saw communication errors and blown coverages yesterday, and he's licking his chops.

Keep in mind Brady* and NE*** lead Rex and the Jets 8-3. So he and Bellycheat figure overall, they p*wn Rex. Business as usual, is the mode in NE.

  8. Glad we won and all, but Roman neutered our offense most of the afternoon. Got the impression he didn't have confidence in Taylor nor was I impressed with his schematic designs. Got way too conservative way too early. No excuse for not targeting Sammy more than one or two times as well. Glad our defense rose to the occasion because, based on one game, I'm not sure Roman can go out and win a game with the mentality he showed today.

    GO BILLS!!!

Kelly says you know football, but really, I don't follow the logic "not sure Roman can go out and win a game with the mentality he showed today" when our team led all the way and was up 24-zip after a very long drive in the 2nd half. I mean, the mentality a guy shows when he's up 24 pts is just not the mentality a guy shows when he's down 24 points and how can you judge one from the other? I think Roman is constitutionally opposed to putting more on film for the next opponent than he has to, JMO. Keep in mind Watkins has been out with injury, he and Tyrod are still reportedly working on their timing, and Watkins may not be all the way back. If we don't see him targeted week after week I'll worry. I'd be worried also if Taylor ignored him to fix on one guy, but he spread it around. We didn't see a lot from Clay, either.

Targets got distributed, handoffs got distributed. McCoy's running stats would look better without all the holding call backs (19 yds and a TD by my count)

Things I saw that I didn't like on offense:

    1) all those f*@!# holding penalties, especially on Wood and Glenn. How many was that, 4, just split on the 2 of them?

    2) even with all the holding penalties, the line's run blocking was not "all that". Either McCoy isn't all the way back yet, or we really need an answer here. McCoy needs run blocking. He's not a guy who creates holes for himself.

    3) Tyrod's ball security. I know, I know, it was raining. I know, I know, it was very heads-up of him to recover the fumble and knock the batted pass to the ground before a defender nabbed it. But man, hang onto the rock and don't throw at opposing linemen in the first place.

    4) OK, the chop block penalty on Clay was bogus, but the personal foul penalties on D and ST have got to go. We did not look like a well-coached team in that regard. Listen to Marv Levy guys: "Don't be dumb, don't be dirty".

    5) Communication errors or whatever it was that left receivers uncovered. Get it straight before next week, guys. Brady was watching, taking notes, and naming names.

  9. Last but not least, I would like someone to explain the "running into the kicker" penalty on Dixon and the non-penalty on what looked like a very similar, but later with less excuse, take-down of our punter by Indy. Use small words and speak slowly when you do try to explain.

When the Bills' punter got hit, the Colt was blocked into him. When the Colts' punter got hit, the Bill was not blocked into him.

Fair enough, except, I didn't think the Colts punter got hit. He kind of fell down on top of Boobie. The announcers were saying some stuff about "allowing the kicker to land" not saying he got hit. And I thought the Colt player wasn't blocked hard and kind of dove for our kicker "whoo hoo kicking team touched me, free target!!!!". But I'll see when the all-22 comes out Tues.

  10. Does it matter what happened in the past at all? Today's showing in regards to penalties is something that needs to be addressed. Period.

This. Except, IMO, a lot of teams OL hold like the dickens. So if the choice is between holding, vs letting your QB get hit/maybe causing a fumble or between holding while a run breaks off vs letting the runner get stuffed, I think a lot of teams will coach the OL to take the chance.

Better fundamental technique is the ultimate answer, and that takes time.

  11. Great game by our team and happy with the win. With that said as an OC you should go into a game trying to get the ball into the hands of your best players, regardless of matchup. Watkins was used as a decoy and garded by Davis the whole game, but its simply unacceptable to not even look his way.

There is no "I" in Team but evidently there is an "I" in fan percept"I"ons?

McCoy, Harvin, Clay, Wood - aren't those some of our best players? Take what the opponent gives you. Sammy had a chance at a great bomb for a sure TD that was just slightly overthrown. Let him have a chance to tune up with Tyrod, they'll have their day.

  12. Is there anybody besides me that feels we were getting hosed by BS Ref penalties in second half?? I am tired of these BS calls that always go against us.

I can't say that they were all BS penalties or that they always go against us.

In some circs, I do have a feeling sometimes the refs are under orders "if you can with a call, keep the game interesting, let 'em back in it" For example, we were clearly holding on McCoy's TD run that got called back. That said, watch the Pats OL sometimes - they hold all day. And I wouldn't bet a plugged nickel there wasn't some holding by Indy that wasn't called.

Last but not least, I would like someone to explain the "running into the kicker" penalty on Dixon and the non-penalty on what looked like a very similar, but later with less excuse, take-down of our punter by Indy. Use small words and speak slowly when you do try to explain.

  13. then Fred would still be on the team. Whaley knew he was going to release him. don't tell him he will be on the team then cut him after training camp

What Whaley said at the time in public (press conference):

Transcript of Whaley press conference 3/11/2015

Q: What kind of role do you see Fred Jackson having for the Bills next season?

That is going to be up to how the coaches see him and it is an open competition for every role. He may win the job. I can’t say that. That is the beauty of football and the beauty of competition. It brings out the best in everybody. It also creates depth for us.

Q: Did you ever have the intention of cutting Fred Jackson?

    No.

The "cutting"? "No" part sounds disingenuous if Fred were told "you have permission to negotiate with other teams".

But the "tell him you'll be on the team"? C'mon man. Everyone on the team knows there is competition, no one's job is safe. Things change, one player comes into training camp and wows the coaches, finds a spot on the team. Another fails to impress or gets injured, Snip goes the Turk

  14. Tyrod's agent might have called Florio and gave him an idea for an article.

Didn't Russell Wilson play for chump change for 3 years? Let the man play a couple games before we pay him more money for no reason.

Tyrod's contract gives him all sorts of escalators if he plays more than 50% of the snaps, so he won't exactly be playing for Wilson-style chump change.

The Bills should hurry up and reno that contract because the last time they reno'd an unproven backup to give him the Big Payday partway through the season, it just worked so well

  15. I guess I would say that there was no guarantee he would have made the Steelers either.

    Dingdingdingding

Sounds like the Whaley cut him but owners stepped in story might not be wrong

Concur, sounds as though LaCanfora has a new source for that (maybe Fred himself, based on what he was told)

I'm guessing though, the ownership stepped in with "why not give him a chance to earn a roster spot?" not "absolutely keep him no matter what" - or maybe I'm just "Hopeful"

It is a bad place for a football team when non-football management/ownership makes football roster decisions. Our 15 season playoff drought bears witness there.

  16. @mikerodak: CBS Sports reports that Bills granted Fred Jackson permission to find new team in March; reached deal with Steelers:

    http://t.co/hm00i0XGRE

This is why Fred thinks Whaley lied

    Oh, Brother.

    Some facts:

Transcript of Whaley press conference 3/11/2015

Q: What kind of role do you see Fred Jackson having for the Bills next season?

That is going to be up to how the coaches see him and it is an open competition for every role. He may win the job. I can’t say that. That is the beauty of football and the beauty of competition. It brings out the best in everybody. It also creates depth for us.

Q: Did you ever have the intention of cutting Fred Jackson?

    No.

Whaley never said publically (that I can find) that the Bills would keep Fred Jackson. He said "open competition for every role". If it's true that the Bills gave Jackson permission to speak to other teams and told him he was likely to be released, Whaley's "no" may be technically correct but disingenuous. He didn't intend to cut him, he intended to release him to a new contract reached with another team, which is just a cut in a party outfit.

LaCanfora now reports that while Jackson was on a plane to Pittsburgh "team officials informed Jackson that from ownership on down, it was decided that the running back was too important to the team and community to let go, that they anticipated him being there for 2015 and they were reversing course on his release." I don't know LaCanfora's source - hopefully it's not just Tim Graham, who is the one who made the original report that the Pegulas got involved.

My $0.02: Let's go play some football. Fred has a happy new home with the Seahawks and his buddy Marshawn. If Fred had gone to another team in March, there's no guarantee he would have made their roster, so no one can say that would have been better for him or not - without a history with the coaches and trainers, if he's injured in training camp or they need more roster space, there's no guarantee. The Seahawks IMO are probably a much better team than Pitts, whose D currently looks like Doo (of the Canine source).

If Whaley was the messenger who told Fred "we anticipate you being here for 2015, you're too important to the team to proceed with your release" and then one of the messengers who told Fred "we made the decision today to release you", I can see where Fred would feel Whaley isn't honest, but it's pretty clear that other people were involved both in March and in August. Look at the Bills roster - it is very heavy on WR and TE, plus 3 QB. Does anyone really believe that Greg Roman didn't have heavy input into those numbers, which make it kind of tough to keep 5 RBs and a fullback? The other aspect of course is money, a vet player who is not a starter and is making top-15 money on the team is always going to be a target for cap casualty and in hindsight it's very clear the Bills were clearing cap to sweeten the pot for Dareus, but everything suggests that money was not the only issue, roster slots (and leaving room for injured WR) factored heavily.

I doubt very much Whaley "knew he was going to release him". Going into training camp no one knows how players are going to shake out. The WR could have stayed healthy, the TE could have sucked and cut one more, Fred could have stayed healthy and made himself the clear #2, Karlos Williams could have sucked, the draft could have played out differently and the Bills don't draft an RB 'cuz someone higher on their board is left. Maybes don't fly in September.

The bottom line is Fred feels jerked around and is taking his release very personally, as many players have, and is saying stuff he probably wouldn't say in 6 months or a year. Football is a business. Business decisions were made. Everyone has a new locker.

Now can we go play some football?

  17. But that is only if the yelling is called, not just that the defense caused them to jump. And if it was first down, there isn't a disincentive.

In the Pats/Steelers' case, it was third down, so the call would have made a big difference, and likely a 4 point difference in the resulting score.

Agreed. Given Mayo's admission that he shouted during the cadence, I don't understand why the Steelers don't file a grievance or whatever they need to do to cause the rules committee and the referees to look into this. I certainly hope Rex is looking into this and will be prepared to talk to the officials before the game.

I don't see why Mayo gets to decide what does or does not mimic a cadence. Just my opinion but if NE jumped on a pre-arranged part of the cadence (6 word or something) I think that's legal if they don't encroach. If they actually shout, it's just too fine hair splitting what constitutes mimicing a cadence or not.
