  1. Tyrod better not start puking before the game.

    Allegedly, worked for Jim Kelly

A lot of people talk about how small Tyrod is....that guy is fricken shredded......

He is indeed. I was looking for a photo I saw off twitter - I think it was a tweet by Kaep - showing Taylor on draft day and now. It was amazing, he's clearly spent a lot of time working on his strength and his upper body. Also, anyone know if he wears rib protection? Relative to how he looks in interviews, he actually looks pretty bulky around the chest/waist in his game day jersey. Wouldn't surprise me if he did.

  2.

The way I've seen other teams handle the interior problem is to keep an extra TE in to block on the edge, and having the OT on the strong side squeeze down immediately on the snap to try to chuck the interior rusher closest to him. The TE, in turn, will take an initial pass set a bit wider than would be typical in an attempt to force the edge rusher inside, where the OT can re-direct outward to catch him. This effectively double-teams 3 pass rushers using 5 blockers (G-C combo on one interior rusher, G-T combo on the other, and TE-T [same T as second combo] on the edge rusher), while leaving the other edge rusher 1-on-1; 6 to block 4. You're right that the blitz can totally hose this up, requiring an extra back to stay in and block, so now you've got 7 to block 5, which leaves Brady**** with 3 targets running pass patterns and 6 in coverage.

I think they're better off trying to get more players in pass routes and into space than trying to win with numbers at the LOS.

Well, I don't know, Bandit. Just like our rushing schemes rely on having a top-notch 2ndary which can handle an "island paradise", the Pats offense really relies on having 2-3 "go to" guys who they rely on to beat any coverage. Gronk, Edelman, and the RB or possibly Amendola or Chandler. I don't know what they'll use, but I'm sure they showed that 4 TE and 3 TE/1 FB formation last game for a reason.

Chandler is the weak blocking link in their TE group. Hoomanawanui is a good blocker, and Michael Williams is a former OT, so he's pretty much strictly a blocker.

Thanks, Bandit, I was unclear when I said "other two TE", I essentially meant "other TE besides Gronk and Chandler". We know Chandler is strictly "meh" on the blocking unless something big has changed.

  3. Agree this is a huge game. I can't wait.

As for the middle I am not sure what they will do to help besides keep the running back in. I expect heavy pressure up the middle similar to what Luck saw (I think Bradham blitzed like 15 times). If Bradham is blitzing I am not really sure if you can double team Dareus or Williams. That would leave Bradham 1 on 1 against Blount or Lewis. I'll take either of those matchups over the course of a game.

Not quite so simple in this game of football chess. Belichek has run 4 TE or 3 TE/1 FB sets before.

I don't know anything much on the blocking caliber of NE other 2 TE and their FB.

  4. The Rex Ryan Playbook: Building a Winner in Buffalo, One Wing at a Time

A nice story that chronicles our offseason

Includes link to BN storiy on Rex that I read, but missed the part where he once punched his brother in the face during a drunken fight (Rob wanted Rex as his wingman on a date, Rex didn't want to go) then felt awful about it.

Kind of led me to understand that perhaps there is a reason why Rex was sympathetic to IK.

  5. G Ro wasn't even here when we gave up 8 first round picks for him. He has no standing to comment.

Stop your overexaggerating. It was only 7 first round picks and you know it.

Our passing game last year was actually pretty good.

I guess that depends upon your definition of "pretty good". 18th in the league in yds, 24th in the league in NY/A.

Would that be "pretty good" if we did that this year?

  6. There is so much focus on Rex and his D against Brady, but this game will be won by G-Ro and what he does on O to counter Belichick's ability to confuse QBs. The Pats will score at least 24; the Bills will score more, and that will be the story of the game.

If it gets to the point where we need our offense to get into a shootout, we're in trouble. If you mean, don't make mistakes and turn the ball over, don't be confused, move the chains, put some points on the board 'cuz the Pats will, yes I agree, we must do those things, it's as critical as having our D minimize the Pats*** scoring.

I don't think Tyrod will be confused. I do think the Pats will play to keep him contained, stop the run, and force him to beat them throwing at least initially. The blueprint for that would be the Superbowl against Wilson and the Seahawks strong run game. Just don't call a pass on the freaking 1 yd line at the end of the game, G-Ro, OK?

The other critical element is we MUST finish and close out the game. So many times we were ahead, or close, and we let those slimy slithering Pats*** squirm back into it and win at the end. We must not take our foot off the gas except to put it on their necks.

  7. The dink and dunk Colt drives in the second half when the Bills kept blitzing but Luck got the ball out quick before they got to him is what Disgraced QB Tom Brady will do all day if the Bills don't make some adjustment

This. Rex can handle this. He has shown in the past he can handle this. So Rex, you called out us fans, I'm calling you out: I don't want to see Brady* slinging this dink and dunk crap until the Pats*** slime their slithering ways back into it.

  8. Pats Defensive line is not the same with the loss of Vince Wilfork in the middle. Williams has the perfect north south running style to attack this front. Shady is more of a scat back. I believe Patriots dlineman Dominique Easley is still out with an injury suffered in week one. Could be a lot of potential running opportunities this weekend. Boobie could also factor in.

    Karlos, is that you?

    Nah man...I am Carlos Williams

Oh, hey, man, Carlos, that's different then!

KW definitely impressed in the game last week. Hit the holes hard, hit the holes when there weren't any holes to hit. He can be a special player, no doubt.

One of the things I loved in my dissection of Andy Gresh show, was that chap Jeff Howe expressing that well, the Pats got gouged on the run 'cuz they were trying to shut down the Stillers passing game. This just in: didn't work, Big Ben hung 351 yds on them, 68% completions?

I would love it if KW gashed the Pats up big-time and you know, if McCoy isn't 100%, let him heal. My only worry is our O-line. It's hard to rush for 1st and 20.

Just shut him down, let him truly heal, and place your trust in Karlos Williams. He is more of a downhill runner like Dixon to run behind Felton. McCoy is amazing in space and needs healthy legs.

I'd rather lose him for a week or 2 and come back 100%. This stuff about how old he is nuts. He's only 27. He'll be fine.

This. I know there's some smokescreen stuff going on, but I'd much rather have no Shady this week and let him finish healing, than 75% way healthy for 6 games then reinjured.

lol. Yeah he said someone decided to run with saying he left early ( and then every media outlet ran with the same thing because Twitter) and that was not the case. He never stopped practicing, they just pulled it back a little at the end.

"Shady" "Sup Coach?" "Shaddddup with this never stopped practicing. You quit early. Too sore. Get my facts about your hammy straight." "But..." "Shadddup, it's New England" "Right, got it"

  9. Here's my question about a pulled hammy. By being pulled (or sprained/strained) does playing on it increase the chance of it getting worse? Or does it just risk it not healing as fast?

Yeah, whenever a guy (or gal) plays on a not-fully-healed injury, it absolutely risks being re-injured. People talk as though there's a big distinction between strains (muscle) and sprains (ligament), but usually one involves some degree of the other. A muscle strain can lead to a ligament sprain or vice versa. In addition when one muscle is injured it's relying on the surrounding muscles to take up the load and protect it while it heals - that makes those muscles more vulnerable.

In this case, though, one does suspect a certain amount of gamesmanship with the Pats. "McCoy!" "Yeah coach?" "Your hammy's tight. Hit the cold tub and get a massage" "Oh, no coach, I'm fine. I can cut, see?" "McCoy, you're not listening! I SAID YOUR HAMMY IS TIGHT! Go rest it" "Got it coach, I'm off!"

Reportedly, one point of friction was that Marrone (and Whaley?) wanted to replace 30+ year vet Bills head athletic trainer Bud Carpenter. Fred Smerlas says Carpenter is great - but is he really up to date on all the latest knowledge and treatment protocols? Did Marrone want to replace him with "oooooh, Shiney!" or is the Bills Sports Science not up to par, either in the S&C or in the training department? There are a lot of learnings about the need to balance muscle groups and how pain in one location can be caused by tightness elsewhere. Good article - scroll down to "conditioning to prevent injury

Hopefully McCoy is being helped by trainers who are looking at his whole back, hip, groin, and leg posture and musculature to see if there are any weak stabilizing muscles that need strengthening or tight ligaments/muscles that need strengthening. A common "weekend athlete" example of this, foam-rollering IT band tightness when the actual culprit may be gluteus medius weakness.

  10. OP is correct. Bills need to design plays to get the ball to Sammy Watkins Jr. Bubble screen, quick slant, comeback, quick out. Those are 4 routes that should shake something loose, and are tough to double-cover because they develop quickly. Get the ball in his hands and watch the YAC. How about an end around to Sammy? It worked for Percy. We have to get Sammy involved, period. It's not just about how much we paid for him, it's about he's our best offensive weapon on the field.

McCoy, Clay, and Harvin say "Hi" Are you related to that 1BillsFan who was here a while back explaining "If Rex is truly a player's coach then he will no doubt ask Sammy Watkins "off the record" who he thinks is the best QB and the one he wants as the starter. Sammy is a big star and I think that what he thinks will carry a lot of weight. The Bills want him happy and for him to have a huge breakout season."? Maybe if Sammy isn't getting targeted, Rex ought to pull Taylor and replace him with whichever QB Sammy wants, so that he has a huge breakout season? Screw winning, that's what we want!

Sammy will be a fine WR in the NFL, but we have a lot of offensive weapons on the field and the last thing the Bills need is for them to start chewing over which of them is "the best". Just Win Baby.

We've played one game in which, IMO, Roman switched the valve to "vanilla" and put the playbook on the shelf after that long drive in the 3rd to avoid tipping his hand to Bill Belichek, though that's just my opinion. It was also Taylor's first pro game and we got ahead early and led throughout, while our OL had its struggles and needs to improve.

Reportedly, Roman's playbook needs a miniature pony and cart to move it around the facility 'cuz it's too freakin' thick and heavy for these jacked pro athletes to carry without straining their triceps and spraining their thumbs, and you're discoursing about how the Bills need to design different plays than Roman already has in the thing? Maybe you could wait until, oh, I don't know - the third game or so, or perhaps even the Bye week, to opine about the plays the Bills do or don't have drawn up?

    has anyone mentioned Odell Beckham?

Not in this thread yet, so GO!

  11. McCoy is a really good back but i don't get or never have gotten the feeling that he is a Bill like i did with others like Fred was !

It could be in part to how he always references his time in Philly ? Even in that video he just doesn't seem to have any excitement in his statements, very blah !!

I also have this bad dream of if he can't or doesn't have the production that he had in Philly that he could be a terrible player in the entire franchise, i had this same feeling about Maybin from the first time i saw his reaction in the draft .

Had the same feeling with Shady from his first comments before coming to B/Lo i just hope i'm

    wrong !!

    GO BILLS !!

Oh, for toasts sake. The guy has played one (1) game in a Bills uni. How much feeling "that he was a Bill" did you get after Fred's 1st game in a Bills uni? Do you even know when was Fred's 1st game in a Bills uni? McCoy referenced his time in Philly because the reporters brought up repeated questions about the Iggles and their rivalries.

He's clearly joking around and having fun/bonding with his teammates teasing Watkins "got to keep the Ferrari in the shop until Sunday" and "Tyrod - I mean Willie". Had a totally good answer when asked what he was talking about with the OL during the game. Some guys are Mr Enthusiasm and some guys are Mr Chill Factor.

    Give your feelings a rest.

  12. Sammy suckz bro. Just get used to it. Whaley is a idiot for paying 7 picks for him.

It is indeed 7 1sts...you see, if you add up the numeric value of each letter of Sammy's first name, you get: 19+1+13+13+25=71. Obviously, 71 is code for "7 1's"

I stand corrected. VDDR is a solid ratio but this equation is foolproof.

Brilliant assessment. Whaley really does suck. When I think of all the talent the Bills could have drafted with those 7 1st round picks.... SMH

  13. he calls him Willy Beamon. I heard him do it last week, haha

His name is Willie (Willie Beaman)

    He keeps the ladies (creamin')

And all the fans (he got 'me screamin)

You can defeat him? (You're dreamin')

    Inflate your chest, drink metrex!

Oh, this is HYSTERICAL! OK, that's IT. No more "T-moblie". Tyrod = Willie Beaman. Although I hope we can skip the whole car-sawn-in-half arrogance and redemption thing.

  14. This was a pretty popular thread I started last year to discuss OL play, so I figured I'd bring it back for the 2015 season.

Ben loves to point out that dominant play in the NFL is not burying blockers; it's simply doing your job just a bit better than the guy across from you.

Thanks Bandit, will be looking forward to it. The "not burying blockers" point is relevant for those who posted about McCoy "whiffing" on a block. In the play in question, he didn't sacrifice his body, true, nor did he pancake the defender a la Freddy J with JJ Watt. But he did just enough to interfere for just long enough to let the play happen, which did the job that needed to be done.

    Here's his post-week1 column http://www.footballoutsiders.com/word-muth/2015/word-muth-denvers-rough-startfocused on Denver.

Love this assessment of Paradis: There are some technical flaws -- he's playing too high (notice his head snapping back at the snap) and his first step doesn't gain enough ground so he's behind the play. But really, the coaching point is "don't get your ass kicked."

  15. Playing devil's advocate here, then why go and trade up for Sammy if this was going to be how you run your system...the better pick would have been the best OL available or trading out for other talent. I like Sammy but agree that the best WRs in the game find ways. Its week 1 and I am not panicking but I bet Sammy ain't happy...

Urrrrr....because in 2014 when we made the trade-up for Sammy, Rex and Roman weren't our coaches and we weren't running Roman's system?

Look, Sammy is going to be a great player provided he stays healthy. That was Tyrod Taylor's 1st NFL start, and he/Sammy have commented on needing to do extra work to get in sync after Sammy missed so much preseason. Give it time. We won.

We actually gave up 7 Picks for Sammy:

Gronk was a second round pick but he gets covered by 3 defenders so Gronk creates a net benefit to his team of +8 (11 defenders - 3 guys on Gronk = Net +8 VDDR (Value on Draft Day Ratio)

Sammy was a first round pick but he gets covered by the top CB (1 defender) so Sammy creates a net benefit to the Bills of +10 (11 defenders - 1 guy on Sammy = Net +10 VDDR

The higher the VDDR the less important the player and you can use the difference between Sammy and Gronk's VDDR to add to the other picks we gave up...

So when you add 2 (10 VDDR - 8 VDDR) to the other 5 picks we gave up for Sammy, we actually gave up 7 picks.

I'm very proud to say I don't understand this argument at all and I'm a fairly intense stats maven. What the **** is VDDR?

In the Steelers game last Thurs at times Gronk was covered by 0 defenders so I guess that makes him 11 VDDR by your argument less important?

  16. Just heard the guys on WGR talking about someone from NE asking if they would be in danger coming to the game Sunday. I'm all for a rowdy atmosphere and as a season ticket holder, I love the effect we can have on the game. But it's unfortunate that this fan probably IS in danger coming to the game wearing patriots gear. Most fans will not be idiots, but there are still a lot who will cause problems. Thoughts?

Unfortunately it might be true for the Pats game, especially given all the loud-mouthing from the Boston media this week. In general, I think it has a lot to do with fan demeanor and a little to do with bad luck, if you happen to be sitting near a couple of asshat drunks

  17.

They've beaten teams that they should have beaten (AFC South, Browns, Redskins last year). I think Football Outsiders' label of "paper tiger" is dead on.

I think they will continue to be a good team as long as they have an excellent QB and they keep him healthy. But their D reminds me of Gailey's 1st year, 2010 draft. Just like that draft where we put 5 picks into D including 2nd & 3rd round but spent our 1st on "waterbug" RB - A lot of Colts 2015 draft picks went to D. They used 6 of 8 picks including 2nd through 5th round, NT, DE, CB, SS and I'm not sure they improved too much for it.

I think the "paper tiger" label comes in because a lot of pundits were talking them up as the 2015 SB contender, thinking they'd taken a step. We'll see what they do this week, but I'm not sure signing Andre Johnson and Frank Gore helped them much without more line.

I think if Andrew Luck were writing their draft board he might have weighted the OLmen in the draft a little differently.
