  1. I'm not sure I get the "Whaley got fleeced" crowd either. Didn't we only give up a fourth rounder?

That is correct. Wellllll, plus we swapped 7th round picks. Question: what did Philly do with that 2015 4th round pick?

Trivia: with the first pick of the 2014 4th round, Philly drafted.....Jaylen Watkins, who is now on our practice squad. We drafted Russ Cockerell, who is now on the Steelers 53-man.

Fourth round players are very hit and miss, and even those that make it, often aren't the "right fit" for their drafting team.

Whaley, IMHO, traded for Brown because Marrone wanted a backup for the oft-injured Spiller who would provide the same speed threat, and for the 33 year old Jackson. Presumably Brown graded out better than the RB available in the 2014 4th round or later. And Jackson and Spiller were hurt, and Brown filled in, and was not quite what we hoped. He got another season to develop under a new coach and system, and got beaten out by a 5th round rookie who is 0.1s slower in the 40 yd dash, taller, heavier, and plays much bigger. He filled his niche last year, he didn't make the cut this year, goodbye.

  2. Da fuc?

Really, after releasing Freddy, they're doing this now of all times?

Why wouldn't they? They made sure Shady's healthy, Karlos is healthy and had a strong 1st game, Boobie damn near blocked a punt - they can't cut a WR cuz Goodwin is still injured, who do you want them to cut, a DB with McLovin on IR and Graham on concussion protocol?

Inactive players always first in line for the Turk.

Fred aside, 3 RB seems to be a bit low to me especially given the rush to pass ratio we're using. IR-ing Goodwin would have made more sense imho, would be a bummer for sure but it would have made sense.

They may like what they see from Cierre Wood

  3. Makes perfect sense. You don't hold on to your 4th string, inactive RB, when you have someone who looks to be of comparable talent on your PS, when you need to re-roster your best player.

Further, if the Bills thought that this was likely to be the move that was going to free up a roster spot for Dareus' return, it was absolutely the right thing to do to release Fred when we did, rather than roster him for a week, and then cut him now. If we knew we were going to cut both guys, we absolutely did it in the best order.

    Yes.

  4. Did any one read this play by play of the 49ers vs Vikings game last night? It's pretty funny. Here it is.

    http://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/live/2015/sep/15/jarryd-hayne-san-francisco-49ers-debut-against-minnesota-vikings

I would love a play by play from this guy. It's to bad we didn't pick up a guy like Jarrod Hayne, that could draw in a big foreign market.

It would have grated on me as one more in a line of football decisions made by marketing guys if we had, but the blog is a total scream! Why don't we have annoucers like that? Can we offer him a job? For anyone who doesn't want to read it, here's a sampling. Bolding mine.

"they’re in an all-black outfit, with flashes of red, in some kind of nod to the menace of Darth Maul"

"Greetings, the People, Matt Cleary here, I’ll be doing my best to call the Big Game - San Francisco 49ers versus Minnesota Timberwolves (or something) - live from Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara."

"Huge men on the sidelines. Jim Tomsula in headphones, Mike Zimmer in headphones, they are the head coaches. It’s the Timberwolves (that’s enough of that joke now) to kick off! And we’re away."

"Boom! Quarterback pulls the trigger but it’s incomplete (ball was dropped) but there’s a flag and naughty defender cops a five-yard penalty for his team." Tsk! Tsk! Naughty!

"First and 20, a lot. Quarterback fakes to throw, fakes again, runs over the line of scrimmage and falls onto his tummy lest anyone hurt him. You’d be teased in rugby league and penalised."

"Righto ... something of a break here in the Big Monday Night Football game between 49ers and Vikings, there was a timeout, I think. Anyway, the 49ers have the ball on their 34 yard line. Kaepernick goes backwards and flings it forwards a long way but to nobody. Good long throw. But not accurate."

"No - it’s fourth and one. Thought old mate Reggie had run over the line. The Niners line up. False start. Flags fly in. A lot of pointing. And ... the Niners are penalised five yards. And coach Jim Tomasula looks like someone’s set his car on fire. And the Niners will punt."

"Fair catch by a Viking. Means you can catch it and don’t have to run. Seems to be a fair few rules in American football. It’s quite a long way from games at Parramatta Stadium."

"Righto, nil-all still in the Big One, 49ers vs Vikings. And there’s another timeout. Vikings with the ball. They make four yards. They have to get another six to make a first down, it’s the laws of the game. But Niners defence belts the running man. And then several of them head off the field. Funny game, National Football League. A sack! The Niners D-people celebrate like they’ve invented penicillin! The Vikings are deep and will punt, meaning...Here’s the Hayne Plane! His first touch in the NFL. And... he drops it? Oh my goodness me, he drops it! His first touch is a fumble! He’s grassed it. Oh my."

"Ha. Well. Funny game, National Football League, our Jarryd, after a golden run through the trials has some real bullets fired at him and comes up with a fumble on a wobbly punt by the Vikings punt man. Tomsula paces the line like he’s a bear in a cage and doesn’t like it. Vikings ball. They ... come up short of the line in the face of a wave of Niners D. Top D, D-men. And now we’ll have another break. Lot of breaks. No-one would get tired, this much is certain."

"Okay, referees are talking to us again ... and penalising the offence another five yards. Hayne Plane is on the field again, this time as a running back. He is given the ball and he .... oh yes, he makes some yards. And he’s getting a little love. And wow, he’s on the telly, doing his thing for the Eels. Ha. Oh, rugby league. He’s got the ball from a pass – he beats one! He beats ... no, that’s all. Just one. Good little run though. He made seven yards."

"Righto. Someone might score soon. There’s seven minutes left in the second quarter. Teddy Bridgewater flings a pass wide by Aaron Lynch, a giant human, swamps the wide man like a giant wet blanket with arms. Third and 11 from the 36, a lot."

"Righto – what’s doing, Monday Night Football game. Another break? Fair few breaks. Not exactly the Helsinki marathon in terms of aerobic exercise. But my it’s fast and physical. And the Niners have the ball a long way from where Ellington caught the ball and ran to not score a touchdown. Second and two, now. And Carlos Hyde makes the first down with a strong run to the right. Reggie Bush is off the field. Niners on their 20- yard line. Hyde again. Good hole running. And again – he’s rolling up field, killing ‘em. And the Niners are over the red line ... it was Hayne! He’s on a special team now, the running-a-few-yards and crash-into-the-other-mob team. Kaepernick goes himself next ... and there’s flags again. And the ball goes to a giant man, No88. Someone might score soon."

"Kaepernick goes wide. And there’s another break. Everyone has a drink. My, there are some breaks. More breaks than Alcatraz. That’s a poor analogy. There were no breaks from Alcatraz. Or was there? Sean Connery made one in that silly film with Nicolas Cage in which Sean says: ‘Yes I will look after your Humvee,’ or something."

"Touchdown 49ers: Minnesota 0-6 San Francisco Oh yes, Carlos Hyde, fine run down the right side, he rumbles his way down the right behind two blockers ... Hyde! Touchdown 49ers! Hyde spun and ran and confused everyone and we have a touchdown!"

I'm reminded of the quote from the Buffy-the-Vampire-Slayer librarian cum slayer-trainer Giles: "I just think it's rather odd that a nation that prides itself on its virility should feel compelled to strap on forty pounds of protective gear just in order to play rugby."

  5. Well given that TT doesn't play wildcat let me know if you think a 6'1 white QB would have been called "wildcat" by a Boston guy. Be honest.

To be honest, I have no idea. I couldn't tell if they were ignorant about the offense T-mobile ran in college, ignorant about Tyrod's role with the Ravens (straight backup, not gadget guy). ignorant about Roman's offense, making assumptions regarding the presence of David Lee as our QB coach, referencing the 1st play of the Bills-Colts game, or just being disparaging d*cks.

But then I tend not to leap to the conclusion anything is racist or sexist on general principal "never attribute to malice that which can be explained by stupidity".

OH YEAH! if they put 9 in the box Sammy will eat them alive. They don't have a corner who can match up. Truthfully I think you will see the opposite, because Billy boy will be scared sh*tless of our wide outs

Billy boy may or may not be scared of our wideouts, but he won't be scared of Tyrod Taylor passing to them until Tyrod proves to him that he should be.

  6. I

Also liked how they were stacking the WR's.

The pass where Harvin caught the TD was talked about after the game quite a bit. Roman saw how they were covering Harvin and knew they were leaving Watkins alone. He knew he would have Harvin with on the deep route and told them to hit Harvin. That was designed perfectly. It'd have been nice to hit Watkins but we got a TD so I am good.

Do you mean covering Watkins, and leaving Harvin alone?

  7.

You are forgetting that these are Boston guys. It doesn't matter if TT plays the same style as Johnny Unitas. "Wildcat QB" is code for something else. It shouldn't be too hard to figure out. And it is all the more reason to want to beat them 2 this year and every year henceforth..............the fact that they dismiss us....the fact that their their reporters are basically throwing racial shots at our QB.....will only make it sweeter. I hope it happens all in one day....this Sunday. It may or it may not, but make no mistake. It will happen.

Wait, "wildcat QB" is a racial slur?

I actually interned for Gresh when he used to work out of Providence. This take aside, he is a very knowledgable football guy

He is if you say he is, but he came across as a Prize Lunkhead crapping on the Bills top-3 D and ignoring the fact that the Pats stopped neither the Stillers run nor their pass last week.

Do you think that was just his scripted role, while Howe was "the voice of reason" who could acknowledge our "elite" D and express concern about the Pats inability to stop the run on Thurs?

  8. Peyton is done. But Brady, a year and five months younger, still looks and plays like a man in his prime. Just good genes and clean living, I guess. <_<

Manning was drafted in 1998. He started right away and has sat out 2011 with injury. So he had 16 seasons as starting QB prior to this year.

Brady was drafted in 2000. He started in 2001 and has sat out 2008 with injury. So he had 13 seasons as starting QB, prior to this year.

So Manning has 3 more seasons of sacks, hits, and hurries than Brady.

That would mean we better solve Tom Brady 'cuz he might be around for 3 or 4 more g#@@$#! years.

  9.

Yeah, but I think that had NOTHING to do with the Patriots.

They clearly play Sweet Caroline because that's what other teams do (Red Sox obviously, but WVU, PITT, several other stadiums I've been to), similar to the white stripes song, similar to pretty much everything save for the shout song which none of the current employees had any hand in doing.

It's just more unoriginal nonsense by the sub-par production staff. I love gamedays and wont spend any time complaining about the stadium, the team or any of that, but the hardest part of getting through the games for me has been the lackluster production. My guess is because it's only 10 events per year they don't invest anything into it, but it's really poorly done.

One of the expensive screens is WASTED by just having fantasy/individual scores. The big screen itself doesn't maximize the resolution properly. When they show out of town scores, they show the game clock in those games, and they use the same font and size as OUR game clock - something that doesn't just annoy me, but could actually affect the players looking up from the field. I don't even mind that they throw a ton of ads up there, I get it, but there's just so much more they could do with that screen.

Sounds like you should write yourself a 2 minute commercial 'bout what you could do better and try for a job.

  10. I agree that we will see a lot of Heavy 2 (2 corners/9 in the box) that they didn't show against Pittsburgh, but I think TT can really hurt N.E. with his arm if they do this. Too much speed outside in one on ones.

This could be a 300yd passing week for T-Mobile...errr T-Airways.

Overall, I agree. I think they'll try to stack the box against us and dare Taylor to beat them with his arm, while trying to bait him into mistakes with deceptive coverage.

I also think he may start out running until we prove we can stop it.

  11. The lunkhead in the blue shirt and brown suit, Andy Gresh? Who is this guy (when he's not playing a lunkhead in the studio)? Can y'all help me identify the other talking heads here?

    http://www.csnne.com/new-england-patriots/gresh-can-taylor-score-enough-bills-beat-patriots

(tan suit, blue shirt pundit): "How does Rex Ryan make this matchup different, if at all?"

Andy Gresh: "Honestly, I don't know how. He's got to think that maybe his defense is a little better than it was in New York, Mike, but the situation is the same. If the Patriots shut down the run, do we really think that TYROD TAYLOR (said with scorn) and this defense is gonna hold the Patriots to a point total the Bills are gonna be able to top? ABSOLUTELY NOT. He's in the exact same situation in a lot of ways that he was in New York, now he's just pandering to a fan base that's dumb enough to celebrate in September"

Well, Alllrighty then. I guess us Buffalo fan base is just dumb and dumber for celebrating a win and cheering on our team, and the words of a lunkhead who mentions the Bills QB as responsible for holding down the Patriots offensive point total, and who describes our defense as "maybe a little better than (2014 Jets)" just prove it. But it gets better.

(Dark Suit, white shirt pundit): "But the last 4 games have been decided by 3 points or less, and there's more talent on this Buffalo Team, Jeff. Do you expect the same or is it different?"

Jeff Howe: "Well, they're an elite NFL defense. And how does he make it different, it's going to be better, because Rex Ryan always makes everything better... He's got this team believing in their head coach, which I don't think they ever did with Mike Pettine, so....Tyrod Taylor, you know what, he played well. I don't think anybody expects Tyrod Taylor to light the world on fire, but he played well against the Colts, and you have to give him that, in a limited amount of work that we've seen so far. Who's to say that he can't come in and play efficiently against the Patriots, if the Patriots don't stop the run the way they didn't stop the run against Pittsburgh?"

OK, I'm torn. On the one hand, it's hard to respect the acumen of a sports writer who thinks Mike Pettine was the head coach of the Buffalo Bills last year. On the other, at least he's objective enough to recognize that the Pats were, in fact, not successful in shutting down Pittsburgh's offense, especially Pittsburgh's run.

Andy Gresh: (portentiously) "I think a little bit of the Tyrod Taylor history does precede him, and look, I'm with you, for what they asked him to do, he played OK. But can you ask him to do more? I don't think you can"

Hmmm, way to address the point that the Pats did not, in fact, shut down the running game effectively against Pittsburgh - 5.4 ypa on 25 attempts - or, for that matter, the passing game (38 attempts, 8 ypa), and if Big Ben and his receiver were in better sync and the FG kicker didn't miss twice, the Pats could be looking at 0-1 in the W-L column despite how sucky the Pitt D is.

At this point they cut to film clips and I can't tell who's saying what.

(whichever of them is "Mike"): Tyrod Taylor is a "6'1" Wildcat QB" (did V-Tech run the Wildcat? Has TT ever run the Wildcat?).

Gresh again: "You don't need the proverbial rocket arm, you to be accurate. Wide open throw right there and as the windows get smaller, I just don't have a lot of faith that he can make the kind of throws needed against better teams. Let's remember, they played Indy and Jonas Gray ran for 200 on Indy"

(I'm confused now. Are we arguing that because Indy gave up a lot of yards running while defending against Tom Brady in a game where he threw 2 picks, Indy has bad pass coverage? Or just that Indy's defense totally sucks all over despite any off-season efforts? What's the point?)

Pundit in Brown suit, white shirt: "Yeah, you know, Jeff, you were mentioning the run game. Listen, Bill Belichek does a great job, whatever your strength is, of taking it away. So if you do take away Lesean McCoy, do you think he (Taylor) can go up there and beat you with his arm?"

Jeff Howe: "That's what so great about this matchup, in that we don't know, did they (the Patriots) purposely try to leave holes - I don't want to say leave holes, because nobody wants to get gashed the way the Patriots did, but did they play with a lighter front because they wanted to anticipate the passing game of Pittsburgh a little more, and then do they completely reverse that against Buffalo, do they become that matchup team that they've been for so long? If they do become heavier up front and if they do protect the edge (stuff about how great Ninkovitch is usually)....Rex Ryan is going to make Tyrod Taylor and Lesean McCoy test the edge and if those openings start coming up the way they did against Pittsburgh, then it's more difficult to stop that efficient passing attack" (NB: the Pats did not shut down the Pitts. pass attack, if that was their priority)

Pundit in tan suit, blue shirt: "Andy, tell me about the Bills defense. Is it as good, as talented, as some of the defenses Rex had with the Jets? Look, I think the front four, probably more talented than Rex had with the Jets, but does this team have a Revis? Does this team have a Cromartie in his prime? (....) I don't know if the Bills secondary is close to what that secondary was"

Andy Gresh: "I'm kind of with you in that their ability to bring pressure, to generate pressure with four is probably better than what he had with the Jets, but you're right, there isn't that stud in the back end and you know (all this said while showing clips of Buff 2ndary covering Colts wideouts like blankets) , and we see 94 running up the field...(....) what exactly has he done to make the Buffalo defense that much better? (...) so yes, you have talented players, you have guys who can make plays, but are they going to be able to play as 11 to make those kind of plays, 'cuz you can get a blitz but as we've seen with Tom Brady, if you don't cover the slant route, he'll put it on a guy and deal with taking a hit in the chop"

I guess last year 3rd ranked D against pass didn't answer that? Or are we thinking Rex won't use the personnel as effectively?

    Hopeful says:

I like this Jeff Howe guy. He can watch a game with clear eyes and call good things and bad, though he seems a little wishful thinking on the Pats D since if their goal was to shut down the Pitts passing attack and give up the run, they didn't quite achieve it to my eyes. But who is this pudgy bloviator Andy Gresh?

Anyway I hope the Pats are thinking like this, and if the Bills need some locker room fodder, Here Ya Go - especially you #94 Mario Williams and the B'lo 2ndary.

  12. 9-15: DOUG WHALEY ON WGR (19:46)

Whaley on Stephon Gilmore: "He's gotten better and better each year Hopefully he will take the next step w/ this coaching staff to be elite"

Did you catch Whaley saying "I told him he's gotta spend all week on the Jugs machine?"

I also liked the point Whaley made that it will take time for us to establish our run game, Taylor needs to prove he can beat teams throwing

(I don't think that means "throw to establish the run"; I think it means run run run (lure D in we're going to run) BAM! throw)

9-15: AARON WILLIAMS TALKS ABOUT FACING GRONK ON WGR (10:44)

Aaron wants the responsibility to single cover Gronk and will lobby the coaching staff to do so. I can't imagine that they'll say yes.

Did you catch AW referring to our DL as "the Cold Front" as in "so the Cold Front can go over there and do their job, and that's sack Brady"?

I thought Aaron was funning around in response to a bunch of stuff about how the interviewer (Howard?) just couldn't sleep at night worrying about Gronkowski then the question "Do you want Gronkowski, would you go to the coach and say 'Put me on him'?" "I plan on doing that today, so we'll see what they do".

  13. Given that Dez is out for several weeks, maybe longer, would it make any sense for both teams to consider this? Dallas is feeling they are on the doorstep of a Superbowl but need that extra receiver ... whereas Bills may feel Sammy is expendable and can get some high draft picks and invest for near future.

I'd trade Sammy Watkins to Dallas for their entire offensive line, but I'm not sure they'd go for it - they might want us to package Bryce Brown, and I think that's too much.

  14.

If I don't hear loud, sustained "CHEATER" chants throughout the game next week I'll be disappointed. Preferably the loudest of them coming when Br*dy is being helped off the field after getting demolished by Dareus.

I understand the impulse, but don't you think it would just give Brady an extra "edge" to his game?

Bills fans should be careful what they wish for.

2 wins all time vs Brady and one of those shouldn't count as it was last year in a meaningless game for the Pats.

I am excited but not stupid over this game. If the Bills truly want to be contenders, then they MUST find a way to get past the Brady led Pats.

I'd shut up and prepare! That's it. Motivating the best player in the league is just plain stupid.

How do you think the Bills fans should prepare?

Why would you think the Bills players and coaches aren't preparing?

  15. Well it has to end sometime. This would be like a columnist in Columbus writing some arrogant article about how Michigan will never beat osu this year because they are 1-10 over the last 11. That Michigan is crap now has always been crap and will always be crap. No matter that there are new coaches, new players, etc. I dont believe that and it's the same thing here. I would be mortified - there is always a chance.

I think it was told of Pittsburgh, after their back to back Superbowl win the players were told "better take off those rings and put them in a drawer, they won't help you this year".

  16.

Can anyone explain this phrase to me? "The AFC East still has more tomato cans than Stop & Shop"

Basically, that article spent a lot of hot air and metaphors to say "the Pats are the team to beat in the AFCE until proven otherwise".

I agree. The Pats are the team to beat in the AFCE until proven otherwise. So let's prove it, Right Here Right Now.

My favorite part, nominated for the Unintentional Irony Award of 2015, was this: "My favorite part of the ESPN carve job on the Patriots last week was the part about the Spygate benefits against the stooges of the AFC East. “Looking back on it,’’’ the authors wrote, “several former Patriot coaches insist that spying helped them most against less sophisticated teams — the Dolphins and Bills chief among them — whose coaches didn’t bother changing their signals.’’It’s the Marvin Lewis Effect. A coach gets awestruck at the mere sight of Belichick and Brady and said coach loses his mind and does stupid things."

Cheating is the other team's fault, you see - they were awestruck by the Pats*** and that made them stupid. I guess that justifies cheating?
