  1.

Goodwin has little trade value, he is too brittle, and I doubt Hogan does either. And teams know, if they're looking for a reciever one will be cut and then they can sign him. Not worth the risk of a draft pick. Personally, I think Hogan is the better keep. Goodwin is a one trick pony—run as fast and as far as you can. Hogan can do more.

I think you're selling Goodwin a bit short. His route running looked much improved. His hands and his durability are still not what one would like.

The point stands that Goodwin has little trade value. When every team is scrambling to fit the players they need onto the 53 man roster and avoid IR'ing dinged guys who'll be back in a few weeks, no team is going to want to trade for a guy who has been standing on the sideline at practice with reported broken ribs.

  2. Bills have to pray nobody on the offensive line gets hurt. Kujo and Cyril Richardson are totally useless. If they're lucky maybe the Bills can find an offensive lineman or two on the waiver wire. Kujo is definitely a bust. I can't believe Whaley took this guy in the 2nd round. WOW what a mistake that was. RIchardson doesn't look a whole lot better either. NO DEPTH on the O line.

The other area I see with absolutely no depth is corner. I think the Bills will eventually be forced to move Graham back to corner. Ron Brooks is a good special teams guy but he stinks at corner. He couldn't cover me. I have a feeling McLovin will be out most of the year so you can't count on him. Injury was a lot worse than the Bills thought.

I thought Kujo was OK. You have to factor in as a unit they suck, if you can plug one in to a decent OL they're OK. Kujo looked much improved earlier in preseason.

Richardson was cut. Urbik is OK at guard but the thought of him playing center makes me queasy, which (I expect) is why they brought in a center.

I expect they'll try to bring in at least one OL for the PS.

  3. Cassel. For the love of god, Cassel.

This. If you must have a chap not known to be able to play NFL QB for #3, bring in a dirt-cheap UDFA to stash on the practice squad and avoid the Tebow Circus and the roster spot.

  4. What type of insight do you picture him sharing that he otherwise wouldn't have access to?

You know, I'll put it out there. I don't have a clue what the Volleyball girls all talk about when they circle up between every point. And I don't have a clue what Hasselbeck offers Luck or Moore offers Tannenbach on the sidelines, not being a QB or a football player of any sort myself. Are you? I do know that the younger QB typically says cool things about how it helps him so much, but one could write that off as "Good Press Manners".

What I really think is that with an exciting young QB with fast legs who has never started an NFL game and another young QB who looks much improved but was not "all that" last time he started a game, we should swallow the cap hit and keep Cassel around. Yes, all those millions make him expensive insurance, but if we really want to win, he's our "servicable backup plan" in case the young guys flame out or get hurt early.

I would not be surprised if the Bills were trying to trade Hogan or Goodwin. They are the kinds of guys you hate to give up for nothing but have each other to battle plus 3 guys ahead in pecking order. I starting to think they keep 7 including two mainly ST guys in Easley and Thigpen.

Really hard to trade guys who've been out injured; Hogan is supposed to be back, but Goodwin cracked ribs.

I'm assuming they instructed him to throw a pass 20 yds the wrong way last night just keep other teams off the scent

I think he managed that on pure football instinct.

  5. I hope you guys kick some butt! I am very excited about your season and like the Bills chances. I wish you guys the best and you deserve the best! Nothing but love for the Bills!

Thanks Ice Bowl! As a special thanks for dropping by, check out that nice Youtube clip I found, under the Nate Clemens/Brady thread.

And Good luck this year - Take It To the Seasnakes!

  6. Keep in mind many of us use Swype to type on our phone keyboards and auto-correct can go a bit daffy.

If they wait that long (4p Saturday) Cassel gets paid and we get no cap relief.

I don't think that's the issue? As long as we cut him before the season opener. But we would have to cut someone else to get down to 53.

I don't think we should cut Cassel at all - under the circs, if we're "in it to win it" this year with one promising QB who has never played in the NFL and one young QB who looks like he's taken a step but has yet to prove it when it counts, I think he's a reasonable insurance plan for a team with a strong run game and stout defense that really wants to get the playoffs.

But if we're going to cut Cassel, Nike. just do it.

  7. I appreciate the spirit of this post.

That is hard to repeat. In 14 years, Brady* has learnt a few things. How to get down and slide quickly or flee out of bounds if he does run, head the list. Avoiding the need to run is right up there.

But I do have an alternative to offer, from last year's Green Bay NE** game.

Enjoy! And I do promise, if you like to watch Brady beaten to the ground, you WILL enjoy it

  8. Believe it or not, I for one prefer the offseason to the regular season on TBD. I love the pre-draft posts and evaluations from our resident experts. This year was of course different with no first round pick. The QB controversy ran the table if you will. Anyway, here goes....

    Bill,

    Appreciate your posts.

Did you see that post from Chevy Van Miller saying he was heading out, because the board on the regular season belonged to you or words to that effect?

Not to take everything away, but I do believe that everyone welcome and the more the merrier - if you agree could you weigh in with him? Maybe your word would count for more.

Unless you're the same guy with two names, I just thought of that

  9. That's what the QB coach, OC are for.

The OC needs to focus on how the game plan is working out and what adjustments might be needed. He doesn't have time to "offer veteran opinion" to the QB and may not have any QBing experience from which to offer veteran opinion. This is the first place Marrone and Hackett went wrong with EJ, trying to have the OC do it all.

The QB coach, maybe, but if he's a guy like David Lee, whose experience playing stopped as the QB of Vanderbuilt U, mightn't there be significant nuances of playing QB in the NFL that he can't offer veteran opinion about 'cuz he doesn't know 'em?

As I've said elsewhere, paying a vet significant bucks is a choice some teams with more established young QB (Luck, Tannehill) have continued to make. Even the Seasnakes have TJax.

  10. Right but what I don't understand is the veteran presence piece. Even if TT is hurt, wouldn't he offer that veteran opinion from the sideline? You said it yourself, EJ might be 2. Is Cassel's expertise from the sideline more beneficial than another WR, TE or special team player? Idts

I don't seem them spending 5 mil on a third stinger

I wouldn't think they'd pay anything for a first or second "stinger", either, much less a third. Play football long enough, you can get one for free

Look at it this way. Taylor has been in the league 4 years, but his game-day experience is miniscule. You can watch all the film you like, but it's not the same as being on the field with the bodies flying. That's why to some people, Taylor is a risk. He's unproven - showed well in preseason, lots of potential, but unproven.

So even if he's absolutely hot stuff, game ready, "all that and a bag of chips", there may still be value in having a guy with a lot of playing time under his belt. Look at the Colts - they have Luck, there's never been any question he's starting, and yet for the last 3 years they've been paying Matt Hasselbeck an average of $3.3M a year to be the steady vet at his side.

The last couple of years, the Phins have been paying Matt Moore for the same purpose - in 2014, they paid him $5.5M as the backup per overthecap.

  11. The only thing I can think of is they may be trying to trade Gray or Gragg for a late round pick because they have similar skills and if they find a taker they will keep OLeary because they want to keep four.

It's also possible that despite his poor showing in the preseason they do really want him for the practice squad and they are just using this last 24 hours for another team looking for a backup TE to sign one and then no longer have a need to sign OLeary.

It's also possible that they want to take their time with the WR/TE because of all the injuries on the WR. I think the first players cut are the ones the coaches really had their mind made up about at the beginning of the week. They might have been saved by a rash of injuries or a really stellar performance in Game 4, but neither happened for them.

The final few cuts are the toughies - the ones where different position coaches demand to keep conflicting numbers of players and Whaley and his staff have to take time sifting through practice notes and film and talking it through with Rex and the coordinators; the ones where the position coaches themselves aren't clear on how they rank guys and have to go back and review a body of data with their bosses.

Injuries where guys are expected back slow things even further - need to check in each case is the timeline still unchanged, is there someone we should really IR, and so forth.

  12. This is true but everyone wanted to make it strictly about the RB depth. Freddy got caught up in a numbers game all the way around; from his age to his salary to less RBs being kept in favor of other positions.

    GO BILLS!!!

Who is this "everyone" of whom you speak? I said from the start it had to do with the overall # of injuries at different positions, esp. WR

    Concussion.

Thanks. I thought maybe they were "stashing" him on IR, but I see now he was waived/injured

  13. realistically, some of the last choices may be waiting to see who they get to the practice squad. like maybe they are more prone to cut cassel AFTER simms is there, just in case of early injury, as an example.

Saint, not sure that works? They have to cut 3 more (at least - assuming there's no one on the cutout floor they want) by 4 pm tomorrow.

But I thought they can't sign the practice squad until Sunday?

If they're counting on someone who is on the practice squad, those guys can be offered to sign to another team's roster any time, right? So again, not sure how that would help them.

Willis got jacked-up against the Steelers on a KR.

So it's for-real? What was his injury?

  14. Rouge-gate is still going on, I know this because I looked at my twitter feed for a Cassel update but was greeted with:

We get it everyone. It's over now though, let's all move on... :D:beer:

    Also from Timmah:

Tim Graham @ByTimGraham 7h7 hours ago

Pro tip: If you don't think my sources are reliable, then don't follow or pay any attention. That's what I would do if I was me. God bless.

The problem with that, Tim, is when you're a journalist and other reporters/networks are picking up your quote and running with it unverified and unexplained, it's kind of hard to not pay attention. You can ruin someone's reputation, and all you have to say is "well then don't follow or pay attention"? Bush league, and I ain't talking about the former Presidents.

  15. Carpenter isn't "his guy"...not a Jet fan, but did Rex outwardly complain like this when Folk only hit 82% (32/39) last season? Or 78% (21/27) a couple seasons back? Heck, Folk an 80% career kicker. Carp has a week to figure out his swing, but I'm not sure why Rex is on his back side because he seems to have given Folk A LOT of slack during his tenure in NY.

Well, I'm not sure, but I think there are a couple of factors here. I don't think it's an accident that Rex keeps mentioning Gay. It's cutdown time. Coaches hate to cut players, especially sympatico "Player's coaches" hate to cut players. So Rex is crab-assed about having the ST specialists take up 4 roster spots instead of the usual 3 and having to cut an extra player. That raises his standards for kickers. It's kind of like Rex has "head coach PMS" right now, KWIM?

Second, I think, is the change in rule for extra point. The extra point is now a 33 yd field goal. While Folk was a lower percentage overall kicker, he was perfect, 100% from 30-39 yds while Carpenter only 92% from 30-39 yds. Carpenter has not only missed 3 FG (two from 40-49 yds where you would like it to be "Money"), he's missed an extra point. Rex wants to know he can count on that extra point. In fact given his druthers with the rule change, he might swap a couple percent on the longer stuff for more certainty on the 33 yd extra point.

  16. That's fair, you seem like a reasonable poster to be honest. I just think it's a little ridiculous if you guys are nitpicking at Taylor all year and acting like a mistake by Taylor is a victory for the EJ supporters when that is the guy who EJ could not beat out in the first place. If Brian Hoyer falters that doesn't mean that Ryan Mallet is good or would be any better.

    1) TT is the starter now. Being nit-picked by all just goes with the territory.

    2) by definition, when a team loses, the backup QB is the most popular guy in town. So if EJ winds up as the #2, that goes with the territory too.

  17. I can't believe there are posters on here who have the gall to think that they saw enough and know more than the Bills brass in terms of who should have been named the starter. I pay pretty close attention to this stuff guys. Everyone on planet Earth had EJ behind Cassel and Taylor in camp. Everyone. In the preseason, I think Taylor showed the most. I think EJ played great but I think Taylor was even better. Most everyone agrees with this as well. There has been a HUGE buzz throughout the NFL surrounding Taylor all summer. It was a relatively easy decision for the coaches. I'm not sure what some of you are missing here.

Whoa, Metz!!! You know you're on TBD here, right?

I agree on the ranking TT>EJ>Cassel myself, but plenty of us have all sorts of gall to second-guess Bills brass and coaches. We do it routinely, and sometimes, some of us are right....

....then again, even a busted clock is right twice a day, or so they tell me. I personally have my doubts; what if it's set to military time?

  18. Us EJ guys gotta get on board the TT train cuz he's the guy. Rex and Whaley ain't gonna pull him for EJ barring utter collapse. Those pro football guys would rather hang themselves in their bedroom closet wearing women's lingerie than admit they are wrong. It's TT or bust baby!

What, What? This is Rex Ryan we're talking about and that's just too much information about his personal preferences.
