  1. No, no it can't. It's one draft class--if you get it wrong, you go after another QB next offseason. I swear, some folks think that if you wait long enough a franchise QB just drops into your lap. It's been 20 years since Kelly retired; it would've happened by now if that approach worked.
  2. Yes, waiting and taking whatever QB is left later in the draft has worked out extremely well for the team these last 30 drafts.
  3. I agree that RJ and Bledsoe represent such an allocation of resources. Losman I find to be a gray area since it doesn't quite mesh with the idea that they valued QB enough to make it their #1 priority. Thanks for checking me on that--it's an important distinction to draw.
  4. I am not counting Kizer, though I would argue that if you get traded after your rookie season, then something's not right. No. Their first draft slot was No. 8 overall; they used that to trade down. I think you know what I'm saying.
  5. Interesting study: since 1999, each time the Browns have drafted a QB in the first round, the very next QB off the board has gone on to a more successful career. He wasn't their first draft slot; they moved down from 8 overall
  6. I crossed 3 needs off of the list based on the signings of Bodine (C2), Newhouse (RT competition), and Humber (I crossed off Mike LB since I now believe that Humber will play Will and Milano will play Mike). Down to 9 roster spots on the 53 IMO. With a trade-up, you can reasonably expect to fill 6 of these in the draft, so there probably needs to be 1 more UFA signing prior to the draft, and then you can backfill the last two spots with street FAs. I'm personally hoping that Leonard Johnson gets brought back as the Slot CB1, and soon.
  7. I've asked this a few times, but haven't really gotten a response from anyone else, so I'll ask you... This franchise has been in existence for almost 60 years, and has never used it's first draft slot to select a QB. If now is not the time to be aggressive, then when?
  8. 1999 was the last time QBs went 1-2-3; Couch-McNabb-A. Smith
  9. A few issues here... - Miami can't offer 4 first-round picks, only picks from the 3 upcoming drafts are eligible to be traded - Even if Denver offers 5 and two more 1sts, those future 1sts will be downgraded in value to 2nds - If Buffalo does move to 2, they aren't trading down, since they'd only move to 2 if they're okay with at least 2 players
  10. I would pounce immediately. Cut one of Miller/Mills/Ducasse if necessary.
  11. His official combine weight was 226 lbs; there's no reason to question it.
  12. Yeah, Stanford is an ATHLETE if nothing else.
  13. No offense: the bold text is the biggest misconception I see regarding drafting QBs. You only set your franchise back when you limit the number of attempts that you're willing to make at finding a franchise QB in a given time period. Signing McCarron? Great move; count him as an "iron in the fire" (and I know some folks are going to get sick of me using that terminology). Trade up and draft a top-3 QB this year? Great, count him as an iron in the fire. Peterman? Sure, for this year, count him as one too. Next year, if none of these guys look the part, then you part ways with McCarron and Peterman and make other moves at the position. Agreed, though it'll probably be closer to $85M once this year's draft picks are signed.
  14. We were even closer than I remembered, as I had Trubisky to Cleveland at 5 in a trade-up, Mahomes to Arizona at 13, and Watson to Houston at 25
  15. I could easily see Watson being a day 3 pick for McDermott & Co.
  16. No, he didn't say that they were having conversations with each guy; he said that they've only talked to each guy for 15 minutes at this point. He also said that the team had no plans to move up or down from 21 and 22, and we know how that turned out. You just don't know.
  17. I have to ask, respectfully: if now isn't the time to make your play for a QB in the top 10, when will it be time? This franchise has gone nearly 60 years without ever using its highest draft slot on a QB. At some point, isn't it time to stop aiming and pull the trigger?
  18. Yeah, I didn't like either guy during my draft prep, but every guy is entitled to some bad misses. I mean, John Elway is viewed as this great GM by a rather wide swathe of the football-watching community, and in general his drafts have been lousy.
  19. Yep...you and I were in lockstep there--IIRC I had them going Trubisky (5)-Mahomes (13)-Watson (25) in R1 and you had them going Watson-Trubisky-Mahomes, but all in the top 10 This year I'm convinced that 4 will go in the top 10, and I'm still deciding whether I think Darnold or Allen will go #1
  20. That's my thought as well--if he can be the least of your starting 11, then you're probably in pretty good shape.
  21. I'm a definite yes to Minter in this scheme
  22. He's also one of my favorite people in the business--an absolute class act with a great sense of humor.
  23. The reason that Kaep doesn't have a job is that he showed a greater interest in promoting his off-field agenda than in his on-field performance. If Rosen does the same, then yes, teams will pass on him.
