stevestojan Posted November 8, 2004 Share Posted November 8, 2004 I know, I know, I watch too much TV, but honestly, this is the single best "quality" show on TV. They had a family where BOTH parents were deaf. They had one son, 14, who was "normal" (no diasabilities). They then had another son, 11, who was blind, and autistic. The 14 year old was one of the most heads-up responsible kids you'll ever see. The 11 year old was amazing too, since his parents can hear, and he can't see their sign language, he actually holds their hands while they sign, and "reads" their sign language. Unreal. Anyway, since the son is autistic, he is drawn to sounds, and there have been many times where he will sneak out of the house at night, and the parents obvioulsy dont hear him. So, they added a GPS system to his pajamas, so if he leaves, the parents bed shakes them to wake them up, and if he goes too far from the home, the police are notified. My wife loves it and if there's a bad game on Sunday nights I'll catch it too. It was a very good show, its amazing what those guys can do in only a week. The way they paid attention to the special needs of every one in the family, the computers with the web cams so they could sign to each other from any room in the house. I thought the really amazing part was the wrap up at the end, when they came on and presented the 14 year old son (this kid is truly a saint) with a $50,000.00 college scholarship. I have an 11 year old daughter who volunteers in the developmentally disabled classroom at her elementary school. She spends every free minute she can in there, reading with the students, helping the teachers and assistants. She also has spent time trying to educate other kids in her class about these kids and their difficulties. Needless to say, even in this day and age, kids can still be pretty mean, but she's actually managed to get some of them to go with her and spend time in the class, and realize that they are just kids like them, with some unique challenges. needless to say my daughter is already planning on being a special education teacher, and was absolutely glued to the television for this entire episode. The mom and dad made a cute couple together.....they actually asked for a smaller bed so they can snuggle closer which I thought was cute...they met when they were 4 years old...imagine that!!! I think the Mom was funny with her facial expressions when they were tearing down the house and when she saw her house for the first time I was in tears......this family definately deserves it. This family was all time most deserving I also liked the fact they brought in all these teachers and specialists to help out and show the design team what it is like to be autistic and blind. If you also noticed when they were showing how the tracking device works they had a police officer there to operate it with the instructor so they know how to use it incase he leaves again. The devices in the house were awesome. What was ironic....the show was over at 9pm and I switched to the ESPN game and saw Ray Lewis and his dance of excess for making a tackle...after watching this deserving family with all their obstacles I turn on to see Ray Lewis dancing around like an overpaid athlete......just goes to show who has class and who does not. Very very well done. I'll be watching more. I was disappointed I couldn't make it up to watch the Dallas reunion. God how I miss that show. The premise of helping out some people who really deserve it rather than pit morons against each other for money really appealed to me. When they led that 11 yr old blind and autistic boy to his new outdoor swing the smile on his face brought the whole show cast to tears (me too). aussiew Posted November 8, 2004 Share Posted November 8, 2004 I cried. Especially when the carpenter was building the swing. Somehow he just knew the swing had to be big. I'm also learning a lot about special needs people and how difficult it can be to do things that we take so much for granted. The experiment they did on the host where they showed him what it's like to suffer through all those noises and sounds with enhanced senses was amazing. When the people on the show are also crying, then you gotta' know you have a hit. The silent cheering was also awesome. I'm glad this show is selecting people who are truly deserving. Wacka Posted November 8, 2004 Share Posted November 8, 2004 They had a great show last season. In the town next to mine there wasa family with 8 kids. I think 6 were from previous marriages. They ranged from about 20 down to I think 13. 7 girls and one boy. The parents had died in their 40s within several months of each other. the mother from cancer and the father from a heart attack. The two oldest kids were basically raising and supporting the others. The boy was living in the garage. They totally redid the house andded about 50% of floor space, put a pool in and paid off the mortage. When one of the sponsors backed out a day before the project, the townspeople raised the money.
