Tuna fishing? Parcells has opt-out clause

Will Bill Parcells become a free agent -- again?

Steve Mitchell/US Presswire

Bill Parcells' contract with the Dolphins allows him to leave the team if owner Wayne Huizenga sells his majority share.

It's a possibility, hinging on whether Miami Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga's sale of his majority ownership of the team goes through, sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.

When Parcells joined the Dolphins as executive vice president of football operations last year, his deal included a onetime out clause that would allow him to walk away, with the rest of his $12 million guaranteed contract fully paid, no strings attached, if Huizenga were to sell the team.

Earlier this year, Huizenga agreed to sell 95 percent of the Dolphins to New York developer and team part-owner Stephen Ross. Huizenga hopes to close on the deal by early January to ensure that the capital gains taxes on the sale remain at 15 percent before President-elect Barack Obama takes the oath of office Jan. 20, Mortensen reported.

Parcells' contract specifically states only Huizenga can be in authority over him. Once Ross officially becomes majority owner, Parcells has to notify Ross within 30 days that he intends to exercise his walk-away clause and collect the full balance of $9 million, Mortensen reported.

At that time, Parcells would be a free agent. And any team that wants his services would not owe compensation to the Dolphins, according to the report.

Among the teams sources say are on Parcells' radar are the New York Jets, Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns and the Oakland Raiders. However, if Parcells' son-in-law, New England Patriots vice president Scott Pioli, is interested in any of those jobs, Parcells is unlikely to wind up with that team, Mortensen reported.

Parcells could negotiate with Ross to extend his opt-out clause by one year. But as presently written, the clause doesn't extend after one season, according to the report.

ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen contributed to this report.

Ralph Wilson has shown he is so economically challenged to the point that he refuses to hire a real President so he assumes that post. He doesn't want to spend money on a General manager so that post is vacant as well.

He hires the the cheapest Walmart coaches he can and then goes and buys some Tiffany players and blames them for the lack of talent.

Will Ralph Wilson hire a GM that would bring in more high quality players...?

Will Ralph Wilson hire a name coach like Cowher or Martyball....?

Will Ralph Wilson hire Scott Pioli or Bill Parcells as president....?

Will Ralph Wilson hire any big name coach with a winning record...NO! these moves would cost to much money!

So what can we as Bills fans hope for?

We can only hope that Wilson will promote Bobby April to head coach and April will then fire the OC, Turk "shotgun" Schonert and hire a name like Brian Billick or Steve Mariucci as offensive coordinator or at least an OC who understands how to set up an effective running game.

Whoever gets the OC job I can only hope they trash the current Bills system and bring in something that protects the QB better and runs first and passes second, like the Cam Cameron System in Baltimore.

I just can't see Parcells opting out after one season and leaving the rebuilding unfinished in Miami. And I especially can't see Ralph Wilson ever forking out the money for someone as expensive as Parcells.

It takes money to make money and Ralph Wilson should be all over Bill Cowher or ther big Tuna if he's available. You can have all the talent in the world and not get the job done, but a good coach can take an average team and put them in the playoffs.

After nearly a decade without sniffing the playoffs seems like Ralph Wilson would have figured it out by now.

i agree, he should have figured this out but everyone posting on this board should know, Ralph Wilson hasn't. I'd love to see Parcells get hired. The guy is money in the bank. But Wilson would never hire him.

Ralph Wilson has a history of only going after a big name when the team is particularly horrid for a while. It took nearly ten solid years of losing to Don Shula before he went out and hired Chuck Knox.

So we need to ask ourselves if Wilson has lost enough games so he is completely sick of losing? I know we as Bills fans are, but Wilson seems to have a much higher tolerance for ineptitude then most fans

Absolutely not a true statement at all. For four and a half of those years, the coach was Lou Saban, a proven and successful commodity who up and quit on Ralph (for the second time!) in 1976. Learn some history, junior.

Whats not true about the statement? Did the Buffalo Bills win ONE SINGLE game against the Dolphins during the entire decade of the 70's ?

No way will you see any coach worth a shyt show up in Buffalo. The Front Office is a joke, and so is the owner. the talent is second rate. All you'll see is a second rate nobody coordinator who is taking a big gamble to get his shot (after being passed over by all the other teams looking for a HC., or a retread being dumped by someone else.

Best hope: Bobby April. Why not? he is as big a gamble as anyone else willing to take the job!

I can only hope Ralph Wilson will stay in perfect form and promotes Bobby April to HC and the smartest thing April can do is find coordinators who know what they are doing. The Bills team really need to crap can this Mike "QB SACK" Martz offense and bring in someone who understands a ground game will win football games.

I doubt ralph and Parcells work effectively together. Even if RW was willing to spend the money.

While you are still here, what makes the Bills less attractive than Cleveland or Detroit? Are they going to get 2nd rate coordinators also or are their Front Offices better than ours?

Tuna fishing? Parcells has opt-out clause

Take the Jets out of the equation, and Wilson should be ashamed of himself if Parcells goes to Detroit, Cleveland or Oakland. Those 3 franchises are as down-trodden and pathetic as Buffalo. Their owners may have more money, but up till now, they have not spent it on coaches the caliber of Parcells!

I too am getting sick and tired of Ralph Wilson and his constant whining about earning less money then every other NFL team. Who cares?? He's still a multi-millionaire that could easily afford to sign Bill Parcells to a multi-year contract at 8 Million Per season, if he wanted to. For all we know, Ralph Wilson may have more cash hidden away then Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder combined. Nobody really knows how wealthy this 90 year old man is!

If the Raider are truly interested in Parcells then perhaps Ralphie may indeed cough up the cash. He and AL have a rivalry going back to the day the Bills trading away Daryl Lamonica to the Raiders where he earned the nickname "the mad bomber" and won championships. It was a very hot rumor that Ralphie finally coughed up the cash for Jim Kelly because Al Davis was courting him. Sending him to England with some Raiderettes

So if it looks like Parcells might be close to a deal with Al Davis it wouldn't surprise me to see Ralph Wilson step in and hire Parcells away from Al.
