Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank You!!! Thank you to everyone who voted for Derek!!! With your help, Derek has made it to the second round of the Sports Illustrated Kid of the Year Contest. We also want to thank everyone for the kind and inspirational notes that we received through email replies. It is truly amazing to see how many people are supporting and praying for Derek. In the words of his Former Amherst Hockey Coach Bob Rossi: "To be a truly great athlete one must first be a great person. The achievements Derek has already accomplished in his young life away from the playing fields and the ice arenas are a big part of this recipe. They show he is on his way to becoming what we as parents and coaches hope all kids develop into, great members of our community. His situation has brought him to an understanding of courage, adversity and sacrifice much earlier than any of us would want for anyone, especially a young boy of almost 8 years". Now that Derek has made it to the second round, the voting resets back to zero and will continue until noon on Monday, September 29th. Derek must be in the top 4 finalists at noon on Monday, September 29th, to make it to the next round.
