Drew Willy headed for the NFL?

Recommended Posts

I've always been a believer in level of competition playing a big role in drafting, but given the recent past, Willy could very well be a 3rd or maybe 4th round pick. Willy is a really big guy (6-4, 225 pounds) with great arm strength. With the horrible defenses he'll be facing in the MAC, he should easily pass for 25-30 touchdowns this season, and UB ought to be headed for a bowl game this time around. If Willy performs well in the combine, I think he has the potential of being next season's Joe Flacco for whatever crappy QB-desperate team drafts him.

In other words, its an enormous stretch at this point, but could we see Willy starting Week 1 next year?

He's incredibly accurate too. That passes without an INT streak he had is nothing to scoff at.

Now he also has a Hail Mary on his resume. Flutie parlayed that into a fortune. If he can coin the phrase "Willy Magic" he can be devoid of skill, just like Flutie, but will get 100 chances.

The problem for Drew is that "Willy Magic" may have already been copyrighted as the name of a porno. He will have to do his research or he may end up getting sued.

Don't forget he's being coached by one of the best QB minds in Turner Gill. Before he came to UB, Gill was the QB coach for Green Bay.

Drew Willy stats

792 yards passing, 8 TDs, 2 INTs, 65.2% completions after 3 games. His 2008 projected numbers are 3168 yards, 32 TDs, 8 INTs. Not too shabby. The MAC has always been the cradle of QBs. I can see Willy getting drafted in the mid-to-late rounds.

Clearly, Willy and the Bulls (awesome band name? or the MOST awesome band name?) should be a headed to a bowl game this year, as they have one of the most talented teams in the conference, and a 7-4 record is probably in the works. How he performs in that bowl game should be the key factor, because it will be the team's first true appearance in any sort of national spotlight.

But honestly, the only purpose of this reply was to pitch Willy and the Bulls

I am bumping this thread just to make sure that others see the name Willy and the Bulls...

Either in college or the pros, Gill has a heck of a coaching future. After Jauron retires with 2 or 3 Super Bowl rings, could Gill end up coming back to Buffalo (because he'll be gone pretty soon-enjoy it while you can UB) as coach of the Bills?

A bowl game, much less a MAC title, is no sure thing. Temple exposed the UB defense yesterday. Now UB did make adjustments and held Temple to just 7 (critical) points in the 2nd half. UB plays MAC powerhouse Central Michigan in 2 weeks. Lets see how the D does then. UB has a young inexperienced LB corps. They have to toughen up in a hurry if they want to have a winning season.

If Bo Pellini doesn't win in Nebraska, Gill will be back there. Gill is already on the list of coaching names of several crappy programs (like Syrcause) but don't expect Gill to leave right away. He's under contract till 2012, and unless it's the Nebraska Job or a big gig in Texas, his home state, I don't expect him to leave.

I spoke with an NFL scout with connections to UB and Drew Willy wasn't even on his preseason scouting report. His 2008 numbers might warrant a second look by some NFL teams. NFL quarterbacks are a like pick the daily number!

Willy has to maintain this pace all year to get any NFL interest. But getting on ESPN doesn't hurt your chances.

OK, good catch. How about "All in Drew Time!" or "He gives DBs the Willy's!"?
