A country with only 21.5 million people can be sitting 3rd in the Beijing medal count, 10th in the history of the modern summer olympics and 12th overall (including winter olympics). That is absolutely fricken' amazing!!!! And another little known fact...Australia is the USAs most loyal ally. Having joined them in every war and conflict since the late 19th century. But also spent a few years in Melbourne. My younger brother lives in Melbourne and surprisingly, he's a Bills Fan. I didn't know it for years. He started to take an interest during the Super Bowl years. Typical Aussie - roots for the underdogs. My visa was one of those fancy electronic "ETA" ones, where I couldn't hold a job. The folks I had stayed with had one all lined up for me and whatnot. I still talk to friends over there, probably weekly. I spent two months in Croydon/Lilydale/Kilsyth, which are Melbourne suburbs. Right off of the Maroondah Hwy (if any of this rings a bell?)... I did all of the touristy things in the first week (Surfing @ Bells Beach, Pygmy Penguins, Casinos...) and spent the the rest of the time just "living" there. I put down a few thousand VB's while there as well. Morning truly is hang-over time to the Aussies! Once the kids get a bit older, I'm really hoping to stick them on a 747 and head on out there again. Edit... the one thing I really remember vividly... the people I stayed with owned horses. I had just gotten off of the plane (quite literally) and we had to stop and feed the horses on the way to drop off luggage and whatnot. I had been in the country for perhaps 45 minutes. I had one of the horses on a run when I looked up and noticed ~20 kangaroos making their way across a field at the end of the pasture. I juts remember thinking "holy crap, they're freaking REAL" for about a day after seeing that. If I remember right, that horse property backed up to the Yarra river. Funny thing is....a zillion years ago when I came to the USA, no one played basketball. It was a girls game in school called "netball". a few months after I arrived and happened to see a basketball game - I thought to myself...what a bunch of pansies...men playing netball...and those short, tight 70s pants.
