Never fear K-Gun10, I will have April all set-up soon enough. As far as 21 goes, it looks pretty good, I just do'nt feel that excited about it. I'll wait and see.

I read the story behind the movie a few years ago, but from what I understand they took the basic premise and "updated it". Is that correct?

Updated and Americanized. They replaced most of the Asian-American characters with white people.

Yes, mostly because the book was so absorbing -- a fantastic read (and a quick one). I'm sure the Hollywood stamp will result in a somewhat disappointing movie but I'm planning to see it soon anyway.

Stupid that the producers felt they needed to replace all the Asian characters with Americans. Equally stupid that people are up in arms about it.

I read a article in Wired magazine a couple of years ago about some guys from MIT that mathematically figured out a system to beat black jack in Las Vegas. Are these the the same guys? If so I remember pictures of the people and I can't remember them being all Asian.

I think there have been more than one group, but the ones documented in Bringing Down the House were pretty smart. ***SPOILER BELOW**

Basically what they did was count cards. The clever rub here was that the guy who was doing the counting wasn't the one placing the bets. He just sat there making the minimum bet every hand while he counted. When the deck was ripe, he signaled in another guy who sat down (apparently) cold and started betting big and cashing in. Took a good while for the casinos to catch on.

they dont actually count cards but have a +/- system that keeps track of when there are a high amount of high cards left in the shoot...at least that is what I took from the book...i kind of tried it once...not easy to keep t all straight, play your cards and not look like a tool

Actually, they replaced the main guy, an Asian-American, with a Brit, not an American.

Damn Brits.....that's even worse!!

The more I think about it, the more I realize that this is probably a hard story to capture on screen. The tension in the book was internal to the characters....guy is sh--ing a brick while putting hundreds of thousands of dollars into play. Very hard to capture that on screen --- especially if the producers are going for the quick buck with a glitzy script.

Still, I'll see it anyway. Wifey is always begging to go to the movies.

Phillip Seymour-Hoffman could pull that sh-- off!

Sandy Lyle: Reuben, I'm in a situation here. We have to leave now.

Reuben Feffer: No. Can we stay a couple more minutes?

Sandy Lyle: Dude, no. This is serious. I just sharted.

Reuben Feffer: I don't know what that means.

Sandy Lyle: I tried to fart and a little sh-- came out. I just sharted. Now let's go.

Reuben Feffer: You're the most disgusting person I've ever met in my life.

This guy can do anything....and a lot of people haven't even seen what I consider one of his best films - "Love Liza". It's not an easy film to watch by any means, but wow...what a great job he does with the character.

I saw 21 last night. As a pure work of fiction (which it really is), I give it a 4. As an attempt to capture the story told in Bringing Down the House, I give it a 2. In fact, if you read and enjoyed the book, don't see it -- you'll be very disappointed.

Rather than delve into the schemes and strategies around the protagonists, in typical Hollywood fashion they invented some cheesy storyline about needing the money for college, invented some bullsh-- love interest, and even included the dumbest storyline about 'selling out my real friends' since Can't Buy Me Love.

And yeah, brilliant MIT guys absolutely are going to go back to the same casino every night for months. :nana:

That was the most interesting part of the book, how they did it. I don't need a reason to believe someone wants a lot of money. The kids didn't do it cause they were desperate for cash. People that go to MIT generally have a decent amount already in their family. They did it cause more cash is better!
