Crowell - not a MLB

Two items to note from the 2003 OLB pre-draft SCOUT rankings:

1. Contrary to Pyrite's continual ramblings, Crowell played OLB at Virginia and is not a slam dunk to switch positions from OLB to MLB to replace Fletcher. Although he was being groomed to backup Fletcher, he has played very little MLB in actual games. Having him play MLB is as much a crap shoot as starting a rookie who played his career at MLB.

2. Notice that Lance Briggs was ranked 1 slot ahead of Crowell.

Played his entire junior and senior season at inside linebacker, except one game as a junior.

I believe when Spikes went down with the achilles, there was talk of how Crowell had to "transition" on the fly from middle to weakside linebacker. He definitely got better each week at weakside backer during that season.

Why can't he transition back when he has an entire off season, training camp, and preseason to prepare?

Of course this discussion could be a moot point if they draft Willis in RD 1.

Your baseing your argument that Crowell can't play MLB on a report from a pre-draft scouting article ? And his play on the field in the NFL since being drafted has no bearing on the topic in your mind ? Or are you trying to impress with your exhaustive research abilities ?

From that article:

"Comes off the edge with explosion as a pass rusher and can blast his way up the middle to track down the ball … Can play any linebacker position, but his hand usage, run pursuit and zone drops are better suited for the middle …"

I dont think Crowell is the choice for MLB on this team. I think we will see Spikes stay with the team and return to MLB to replace London. Thats where he started. Thats what he was good at, among other things. We moved him to OLB I think when we signed him, didn't we?

Regardless, I think Takeo can still play at a high enough level to take over the MLB spot for a year or two until we can groom or find a replacement. Whether we draft one this year or next,or sign a FA MLB next year, I think Takeo is the man for this year.
