AKC Posted January 12, 2006 Share Posted January 12, 2006 as for getting a new coach, great. let's get some assistant coach who's never done a goddamn thing and who no one truly knows anything about except that he comes from a vaguely defined "good coaching tree." 563405[/snapback] There's truth to that- the Williams and Mularkey hirings both should have come with a "needs leadership experience" expectation that the media and fan base really don't acknowledge. We haven't hired a known leader in this coach (once again), and last time IIRC the reaction when it was clear GW wasn't cutting it early on as a CEO was to add some "seasoned" staff to help him out. Now the big guy sees that Mularkey is struggling and apparently feels he's not getting the bodies necessary but that MM may still develop into a leader and a good coach. What scares me is that MM was an OC and for my money ouur offensive coaching was easily the biggest problem on that side of the ball. Maybe he puts it together, but it would have been nice to see at least his supposed strength pop up a little during this past season. So now are we seeing a bit of Deja Vu in the same old tactic of bringing in the old-time leader to rub off on the young leader in training? I don't have strong feelings one way or the other on MM, and I also have no problem with the corporate "shakeup". I'll give Mularkey the benefit of the doubt in assuming he has improved from his experience and that improvement will manifest itself in some way on the field next year- it's hard to imagine not improving but it wouldn't be without precedent! But assuming the positive we're probably better off with SOME continuity and sideline familiarity with our talent versus a change there also. In the wake of Donahoe's dismissal, Mularkey has become the new target for fans critical of the team's direction. If the Buffalo fans can run Mularkey out of town, God help him if he ever takes a job in NYC, Philly, or DC. What fans say and do is often inexcusable, but for a professional coach to QUIT over it? There are SO many blockheaded things he's done to make this announcement bring joy to me (ya know, calling a pass play on 1st and goal at the 3 in Miami, with game in hand, punting the ball down by 2 scores with 4 minutes left in either week 3 or 4, taking all play calling responsibility away from his OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR,.... the list goes on). He is a little twit that has an open forum to sling crap and make "Dawgged" suggestions. Buffalo has a single media outlet in The Buffalo News and seldomly is anything uplifting generated from that rinky dink paper. Mularkey was not my choice for coach at the time. I wanted Weis, but that is beside the point. My point is that Buffalo is going to have a hard time selling itself to the top available coaches, and that, my fellow Bills fans, is a real bummer! The only coaches who might now be interested in coming to a F'd up situation like this are guys like Cottrell or Haz, who've worked or played here before. Any recently released HC is going to jump into the chance to get right back into the game. It means a payday and a chance to reclaim their reputation. Albeit in the minority, I believe that coaching was a big part of why this team played so poorly this past season. Bad handling of respected veteran players and a total eff-up of the QB situation are perfect examples of my point. I'm all for a fresh start with a seasoned NFL HC. And I'll bet that if ML learned anything from the GM's he's been around, we'll not get an up-and-coming coordinator this time around but a proven professional. You forgot to mention that Rosce STILL HAD A CAST ON when that play was called. Hey maybe that was a good call. Who would believe it was called? Your right the list goes on and on. And the sad part is it only took two years to amass such a list. Also don't forget the competitive advantage gained by not naming a starter Mike, See ya. Nobody wanted to come here to play for a coach with an iffy future, under a new GM - they don't want to be tarred with the old regime. Now if they come, they are part of the solution, the new era.
