RFK jr promised radical transparency in all appointments for NIH, CDC.

How’s that going?

https://www.science.org/content/article/new-head-nih-environmental-institute-officiated-jd-vance-s-wedding

JD Vance’s best bud was just appointed director of a $1 billion NIH institute.

These appointments are typically made after a search committee has vetted the candidate, who is typically a full professor.

Vances bud was an associate prof in a different (not evironmental science) field. Not qualified for this position.

These dudes are truly world class grifters.

Yup.  Good point.

NIH institute and center directors (except NCI) are appointed by the HHS director following advice from a search committee.

Except when you're a member of the grifter class.

You should definitely go protest. Maybe wear a mask while driving.

I admit I was more comfortable when the world class grifter and his family established very close connections to our adversaries in China and targeted a single Ukrainian to run cover for a president's addict son, and a billion dollars in hush money.

Still, what specifically are you calling out with respect to your comment that he is "not qualified for this position"? I'd think the position is largely administrative, overseeing a team, a budget just shy of a billion dollars, and an awful lot of moving parts.

At least he's nominally qualified and apparently not an RFK fringe nut.

That's what it's come down to for me. Could've been a lot worse. Not high praise ...

I’m guessing that you didn’t read the linked article from Science, which is the most respected scientific journal in the US.

Article criticizes Walsh because he has no administrative experience.

I am seeing criticism of the selection because there was no exhaustive search, one quoted individual who is trying to be optimistic, one (potential cowardly lion) who speaks anonymously and references  a “gut punch” and, and general concerns about politicization of science.

As for accepting the statements on the most respected scientists and publications,  I would love to trust without question. I don’t do that anymore after learning our governments most respected scientists apparently participated in dangerous research, partnering with hostile foreign govts, and likely allowed a very dangerous virus to escape a lab and bring the world to its knees.

I can understand the desire to see a thorough search and placement of a vetted individual, but as others have pointed out, this isn’t all that unusual at all.

We both agree to hope he’s honorable, qualified and successful in his role, yes?
