Unless I am misinterpreting your post, you seem to feel that if the Bills fall short of your expectations this year, it will be because of the defense. Please correct me if I'm wrong and accept my apology. Imo, if the Bills falter this year (barring an injury to Josh) it will be due to a lack of offensive weapons.

Since McDermott arrived in 2017, there have been nine NFL drafts. Seven of our first picks have been used on defensive players. I shouild note that two of these first picks were in round two (2020 and 2024). My thing is that the game has obviously changed since the 2010 rule changes. I can no longer visualize a Steel Curtain, or an 86 Bears defense ever happening again. I suppose that the old Arena League was ahead of it's time because the NFL is now an offensive league. I can't see how this can be denied.

McDermott is a defensive coach, and I don't see how this will ever change. He has a Hall of Fame QB and fails to make providing him with weapons his top priority. I am not saying that McDermott is a "bad" coach. My thing is that his primary focus is defense, (secondary in particular) whereas three of his seven first round picks were cornerbacks, and imo there is no reason to believe that this will cease.

Again, I think that McDermott is a good coach, but; if the Bills have a bad season this year it will be his fault (other than an injury to Josh) and he should be fired.

As always, jmo.

I can see your point, lacking offensive weapons contributing to a lack of success, especially if the team gets one dimensional, but I'll still have to stand on the eyeball facts of what I saw on display the last couple of years and now this first game.  No doubt the game has changed a bit in recent years, but it will require a better product on defense to get past teams like cincy, Baltimore, and any other team that will no doubt have a strong offense.  I also think it's more the scheme they draft for that makes this defense a sieve.  We can simply look at those dreaded 13 seconds as a microcosm of the last 3-4 seasons of Josh's career here.  When they needed a stop the most, it simply didn't happen.   but hey, I might be unrealistic in today's version of the game, it's just how I see it.

Either half the board has jumped off the bridge into the non-playoff abyss, or this years Bills are just not good enough, and we should trade Josh for whatever we can get for him.

Which is is?

So part of me is like... Really... we are having this discussion over a pre season game...  cmon man... there is another part of me that had hoped that I would see some semblence of difference in the Defense... not a huge fan of Babich, I am not gonna lie... and I didnt, I saw the same old get run over, give up 3rd and long soft coverage no pass rush defense we had last year... does it mean anything... not necessarily, but that doesnt mean I wasnt looking for a WOW these guys are on to something... so no, no jumping off of bridges... but patiently waiting to see if anything has changed or we are gonna throw out the same  slowly bleeding out crush your soul, thank God we have Josh defense Babich/Mc D ran off last year.  Time will tell...

This

I didn’t watch the game…. Pointless.

There is nothing that has been done in the offseason to lead me to expect any thing different from the D.

IF, Bishop, Bosa, White, Hairston all produce above what they did last year ( except the Rook)

Maybe we are pleasantly surprised, but surprised it would be.

Frazier ran the #1 ranked D in 2021 and #2 in 2022. Since he left the D has gotten worse. (at least in DVOA) Maybe you screamed for the wrong head?

Fair point but when Mcd took over we were good. but i agree that it's gotta change now. Ahead of the curve beats trying to catch up. We been throgh this 100 times.

Great take lol.   Go look at last year's preseason games, and the defensive turd the team fielded all season and tell me what's different?   lol

Kinda was a predictor of what actually happened all year.   lol

I do love the zealotry against logic and the deductive process.

What happened all year was winning the division and stumbling on the last hurdle before the Super Bowl. You make it sound like the season was a disaster and everyone who doesn’t agree is a moron.
