Chandler#81 Posted May 8 Posted May 8 (edited) Following their tremendous leap from also ran to the Conference Championship in ‘88, the Bills set out to prove it was no fluke in ‘89. But it was a topsy turvy season as the fantastic caliber of new talent with large egos had to be reined in. Thrilling come from behind and OT wins were offset by self destruction and we became known as the Bickering Bills. The playoff loss to Cleveland had a silver lining though as it became K-Gun offense that would rule the AFC for years and inevitably send 7 players and HC to Canton. Jukester Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Thanks for the walk down memory lane. I was a Sr in high school. Really frustrating season capped by the Ronnie Harmon drop and Jim Kelly interception in the last minute loss to the Browns. Definitely on the list of Billsy heartbreakers. 1 Quote

njbuff Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Losing Derrick Burroughs to a career ending neck injury in week 3 at Houston cost the Bills a physical player they CERTAINLY could have used in those SB’s. After a rocky start to his career in 1985 as the “other” first round pick in 1985, DB was starting to come into his own in 1988 and was approaching a pro bowl level in 1989 before his career ending injury. Big loss for he Bills defense. 1 Quote
Bills fan since 87 Posted May 9 Posted May 9 (edited) Ronnie freakin' Harmon. I was 13 and my soul was crushed.... Two regular season games stand out for me from that season. The shoot out in Houston, mentioned many times in the random game thread and the loss at a lousy New England. That was the first Bills game I ever attended, we had relatives in Mass at the time and growing up in the Adirondacks I was a long way from the Bills stadium (def one of the reasons why I eventually moved to Rochester, to be closer to the Bills). The NE loss was crushing as I was a kid and we blew a 24-7 lead. I remember walking back to the car with my dad and uncle and then riding back to my uncles place, I never said a word. I was so mad Edited May 9 by Bills fan since 87 1 Quote
Gregg Posted May 9 Posted May 9 I remember the season finale when the Bills played the Jets at Giants Stadium. The Bills won 37-0 and I believe this was the last game Joe Walton coached the Jets as he was fired soon after. The game was sold out and shown on local TV but only 21,148 showed up and I was one of them. It was so easy to get in and out of the Meadowlands that day with such a small crowd. Quote
RobbRiddick Posted May 9 Posted May 9 Ahhhhhhh those were the days. The Bills were good, I had hair, I was slim, I hadn't yet met any of my ex wives, the sun always shone, there was no social media, casual sexism went unchecked, I could bend down to pick something up without moaning in agony and I was convinced we'd win the Super Bowl before I died. At least the Bills are good again 2 1 Quote
