Greatest Music Video

Exactly, it was the first on MTV. MTV was a station that used to play music videos.

It's sad that MTV has turned it to such a heap of garbage. It's too bad that the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' rule of common sense didn't apply to the corporate bean counters...

Actually it was just the first shown on MTV, but "videos" were made long before then.

I figured most people knew that, but thanks for stating the obvious in case others do not know. :P

My favorite music channel is VH1 Classic. They play nearly all the videos we're putting into this thread. Great channel.

The first video was probably The Beatles Strawberry Fields Forever in 1966.They just weren't  called 'video's' back then.....

Actually, if my beer soaked brain is remembering correctly, Michael Nesmith (formerly of The Monkees) is credited with inventing the music video. Did something called 'Elephant Parts' I believe...

The Replacements "Bastards of Young".  The whole video is a shot of a stereo speaker, and then a foot kicks it over at the end.  Good stuff.  MTV ruined music.

Hear, hear.

The Beasties' "Sabotage" ain't too bad either. Just about any of the Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry videos are worth watching.

"The ones who love us least are the ones we’ll die to please..."

Great song, dunno about the video...

Land of Confusion - Genesis

Keep it Between the Lines - Ricky Van Shelton

Winds of Change - Scorpions

Right Now - Van Halen

Whiskey Lullaby - Brad Paisley and Allison Krauss

There's got to be a "Weird Al" Yankovic one in there, too, but I can't pick out just one right now.

I showed my 13-year old the video to "You Give Love a Bad Name" by Bon Jovi. Terrible video, but since his images of Jon Bon Jovi are MUCH more recent than that, his reaction was amusing.

That was originally a #1 hit by Martika in 1989.

My faves:

"Sledgehammer" & "Big Time" by Peter Gabriel

"Buddy Holly" by Weezer, who seem to be making a comeback

"Dreams" by Van Halen (remember the Blue Angels?)

"UHF" by Weird Al Yankovic (which is a parody of every music video from the late 1980s)

"Livin on the Edge" by Aerosmith

"1985" by Bowling for Soup

"One Week" by Barenaked Ladies

That Van Halen "Dreams" video was awesome. I was so pissed when I bought their Greatest Hits Video DVD collection and the Dreams video on it was a crappy live performance at the Whiskey.

Van Halen, Hot For Teacher.

Just saw it while flipping channels on one of the VH1 stations,

nothing else comes close IMO, not even the Stones' 1968 Jumping Jack Flash promo.

When I saw the topic, that is the one that immeditely popped in my head.

Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel is right up there too.

My favorites have all been mentioned, but all the early MTV ones brought back a bunch of memories. The day that Warner Cable brought the new box to the house, I was turning that dial while my dad watched:

Me: "USA... Nickelodean....cool... WGN... hey, we get the Cubs!... TBS... Oh, we get the Braves, too.... CNN... whatever... hmmm what's this?"

Rick Springfield's Jesse's Girl is on MTV

Me: "Hey Dad... It's music... on TELEVISION!"

Dad: "Wonderful."

Why can't I find a woman like that?

Here's a goodie. Hot video!

I don’t know where I’m going

But, I sure know where I’ve been

Hanging on the promises

In songs of yesterday

An’ I’ve made up my mind,

I ain’t wasting no more time

But, here I go again

Here I go again

Tho’ I keep searching for an answer,

I never seem to find what I’m looking for

Oh lord, I pray

You give me strength to carry on,

’cos I know what it means

To walk along the lonely street of dreams

An’ here I go again on my own

Goin’ down the only road I’ve ever known,

Like a hobo* I was born to walk alone

An’ I’ve made up my mind

I ain’t wasting no more time

I’m just another heart in need of rescue,

Waiting on love’s sweet charity

An’ I’m gonna hold on

For the rest of my days,

’cos I know what it means

To walk along the lonely street of dreams

An’ here I go again on my own

Goin’ down the only road I’ve ever known,

Like a hobo* I was born to walk alone

An’ I’ve made up my mind

I ain’t wasting no more time

But, here I go again,

Here I go again,

Here I go again,

Here I go...

An’ I’ve made up my mind,

I ain’t wasting no more time

An’ here I go again on my own

Goin’ down the only road I’ve ever known,

Like a hobo I was born to walk alone

’cos I know what it means

To walk along the lonely street of dreams

An’ here I go again on my own

Goin’ down the only road I’ve ever known,

Like a hobo I was born to walk alone

An’ I’ve made up my mind

I ain’t wasting no more time...

But, here I go again,

Here I go again,

Here I go again,

Here I go,

Here I go again...

greatest music video?

Johnny Cash - Hurt

i defy you not to be moved by it.

333611[/snapback]

that is among the most tragically sad videos ever. Then again the orginal by NIN was really dark and melancholy too.
