Two sworn enemies unite against Putin Kieran Kelly Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan (L) met Azerbaijani president Alham Aliyev last week. After decades of conflict the two countries are now aligned against Moscow The collapse of relations between Russia and Azerbaijan came in a series of quick-fire blows. It began with the arrest of seven nationals from the former Soviet republic last month in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg. They were held as part of an investigation by Moscow into mafia-style killings dating back 25 years. Within days, two suspects – both ethnic Azerbaijanis – died in custody. Others appeared in court visibly bruised and beaten. Azerbaijan responded with fury. Russian cultural events were cancelled, the Baku bureau of the Kremlin-owned Sputnik news agency was raided, and a group of Russian IT workers was arrested and accused of drug-trafficking and cybercrime. https://www.yahoo.com/news/two-sworn-enemies-unite-against-050000894.html Then came the threat, on Russian state TV, that Baku could be “taken in three days”, echoing rhetoric used before the 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine. War is unlikely. But the rift is real – and dangerous for Moscow because Armenia, after fighting a series of brutal wars with Azerbaijan over 30 years, is aligning with its old enemy to push Putin out of the South Caucasus. On July 10, Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan’s president, met Nikol Pashinyan, the prime minister of Armenia. Maybe. What did your master tweet about it?

Coffeesforclosers Posted July 18 Posted July 18 How's about that? We're buying drones from the best drone operators in the west. Makes sense.
Coffeesforclosers Posted July 19 Posted July 19 The Abrams hasn't been a world-beater in Ukraine, but a good tank is a good tank. 1
Coffeesforclosers Posted July 22 Posted July 22 This is with an economy roughly the same size as Italy. The conversion of Russia into a Garrison State continues. But given their policy of...refusing to accept that Ukraine's juice isn't worth Russia's squeeze, it makes sense. They've got no choice since the blowback from this debacle now includes a centralizing, rearming EU that views the US as an unreliable security guarantor. And therefore needs independent defense capabilities in all areas to protect its 449 million citizens and $17.9 Trillion economy. It would be absolutely hilarious if this trend towards militarization and centralization continues AND the UK decides to reverse Brexit because it's been an economic disaster and the Special Relationship is on life support due to America First/Tarrifs of the Day. And all because Russia's Eurasianist ideologues and their pet Oligarchs wanted a short, victorious war against "the most corrupt nation on the planet".

B-Man Posted July 24 Posted July 24 Stupid, unforced error. Backlash grows after Zelensky strips anti-corruption bodies of independence Laura Gozzi BBC News Charlotte Gallagher In Kyiv Ukraine's government is facing growing backlash after President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law limiting the independence of two anti-corruption agencies. The contentious bill grants control of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (Nabu) and Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (Sap) to the prosecutor general, who is appointed by the president. Thousands demonstrated in Kyiv for a second night on Wednesday, many brandishing signs criticising the government. As protestors gathered, Zelensky acknowledged public anger and said he would submit a new bill to parliament in response to the criticism, although he offered no further details about what it would contain. Kyiv's Western allies expressed their displeasure at the law. A spokesman for European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said she had requested "explanations" from the Ukrainian government. Zelensky argued provisions needed to be taken as Nabu and Sap were letting criminal proceedings stagnate for years and insisted they had to be "cleansed from Russian influence". He signed the bill into law late on Tuesday after it received the backing of 263 MPs out of 324. Many Ukrainians outside parliament – the Rada - disagree with the decision. Critics say the law will severely undermine the Nabu and Sap's authority and effectiveness. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c9w19vxjr44o

Albwan Posted July 27 Posted July 27 https://archive.is/pS8n1 The Ukrainian Police Agency at the Center of Protests Against Zelensky The National Anticorruption Bureau of Ukraine has long been a battleground in Ukrainian politics, where graft is rife Fighting corruption has been the slogan of successive administrations in Ukraine—with limited success. Anticorruption campaigns have often served as a pretext for politicians and their business allies to strip rivals of assets and enrich themselves. That has kept Ukraine poor and susceptible to Russian influence. Zelensky, who as a comedian used to lampoon corrupt officials, took office in 2019 pledging to sweep away corruption. But his own allies have come under investigation by NABU detectives. They caught one lawmaker tossing a wad of cash over the wall of her house as investigators closed in. In June, NABU filed a motion to suspend Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Chernyshov, charged with bribery and abuse of office, from his post. Chernyshov denied wrongdoing in court last month. Of course there's rife corruption, this is democrats laundry mat. 1 1
