BEARS CONSIDERING VETERAN BACKS?

With most league observers assuming that the Chicago Bears will try to snag an upgrade over running back Thomas Jones with the fifth pick in the first round of next month's draft, we're hearing that the Bears could be contemplating the possibility of snagging a veteran tailback before the draft.

Three names that are coming up, we hear, are Edgerrin James, Charlie Garner, and Travis Henry. Per our official mole, if the Bears can get one of these three on the cheap before the draft, the team could try to trade down, with an eye toward selecting either receiver Mike Williams or linebacker Derrick Johnson at a lower spot in round one.

Apparently, new offensive coordinator Ron Turner has expressed a preference for a more powerful back in the offense he's installing in Chicago. So either that back comes with the No. 5 pick -- or the team picks one up elsewhere.

James is the most intriguing possibility, since his presence in Chicago would immediately put the team on the short list, in our view, of solid playoff contenders in an increasingly watered down NFC.

As to Henry, a reader tells us that ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported on ESPN News on Wednesday that the Bills are still trying to move him to Arizona -- but that the Bills want to swap first-round picks with the Cardinals in exchange for Henry. Sounds good on the surface, but there's one minor glitch. The Bills don't have a first-round draft pick this year.

What in the world?? Yeah that would be hilarious if TD forgot he didn't have a first round pick. What is wrong with this writer, does he honestly think the GM of a football team could be that stupid? (In my best Napolean Dynamite voice) Idiot. <_<

According to Green the Bears have up'ed there offer for Shelton to make it a 2nd rounder this year. The Cards seem to want Henry first off, but only at the right price. Seems that have other desires for the 1st round pick beyond a RB and really need one in there.

The Bears in the past had offered a 2nd next year along with a 5th this year. Green seems to want high round picks this year as he feel he need immediate impact players and feels he can make and do well in the playoffs.

If the bears have up'ed the offer to a 2nd this year for, TD may not have a choice but to pull the stright up trade or even include a late round pick to get Shelton. Or who knows maybe TD doesn't want him and has other plans. Maybe he is trying to get 2 linemen from the draft and needs Arizona's 2nd or 3rd for Henry, forgetting Shelton.

We don't know, but the Bears have really stepped up the bid for Shelton.

Okay, so let's think here for a second. If this were all true, and there isn't a good reason to think it is not, here is what we know: Green is willing to trade Shelton for Henry straight up, but he is not willing to trade Shelton for a #2 from the Bears straight up. What does that tell us?

Travis Henry is worth more than a high #2? That's quite a price for a guy who can't run, catch, block, hold onto the ball, remember plays, or keep his hands off minors, wouldn't you say?

Green has not said Shelton for Henry straight up. Green wants additonal picks from the Bills in addition to Henry. What does that tell you? That Shelton in Greens opinion is worth more that a early 2nd rounder and Henry isn't worth even a 2nd.

No, the writer's moronic move was to publish what a "reader" heard on ESPN News. Hence the reason no self respecting fan would see profootballtalk as anything other than a fan site. This is NOT a legitimate source for football information yet we comtinue to see links here all the time to bogus site.

According to the Buffalo News and the front page of TBD you're wrong:

Buffalo News reports: 'The Cardinals are offering left tackle L.J. Shelton, but the Bills apparently don't feel they are getting a fair exchange with the player-for-player deal. Green is intrigued by Henry's skills. "I think he's tough as hell," Green said. "He's got exceptional balance, which allows a guy to get a lot of yardage. He's smart but powerful, compact, very difficult to tackle. I think he's a good player."'

And where does it say it is straight up. It doesn't it just says they are offering Shelton. There is more to the deal then that. Of course go ahead and act like Travis Henry that's okay.

That's correct. They signed Titans OT Fred Miller for 5 years and something around 17 Mil. Last year, they signed KC OT John Tait for 30 Mil.

They are done looking for OT's.

See, the Bears would have absolutely no reason to get into the Shelton race now. They don't need him anymore. Their line is done.
