Chiefs-Rams Is The Week 11 Super Bowl — But Probably Not The Actual Super Bowl

RAMS1.jpg?w=575

In a showdown of 9-1 teams, the Rams will now host the Chiefs in Los Angeles after the game was relocated from Mexico City.

There’s a new team atop FiveThirtyEight’s NFL Elo rankings this week, and it’s the one we discussed in this space last time around — the red-hot New Orleans Saints. Fresh off an impressive victory over the Los Angeles Rams, New Orleans turned around and walloped the Bengals 51-14 in Cincinnati. Based on how they’ve been playing recently, there’s no team more deserving of the No. 1 slot than Dem Saints.

However, New Orleans is also the fourth different team to hold the top spot in Elo so far this year, joining the Patriots, Eagles and Chiefs. That’s tied for the most handoffs of the No. 1 spot through Week 10 of a season since 2002 (when five separate teams held No. 1 to that point in the schedule). So we still don’t have a great sense of who exactly will be meeting up in Atlanta in February. In fact, there’s still a decent chance it might just be the two teams that are scheduled this week for an epic Monday Night Football clash — the Chiefs and Rams.

Both teams sport 9-1 records, and they have similar strengths and weaknesses. According to Pro-Football-Reference.com’s Simple Rating System (SRS) metric, the Chiefs rank second in the league on offense and 19th on defense; the Rams rank third in offense and 14th on defense. K.C. is led by a couple of 23-year-olds: quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who leads the NFL in passing yards, and running back Kareem Hunt, who ranks fourth in rushing. L.A.’s pair are both 24: QB Jared Goff (second in passing yards) and RB Todd Gurley (first in rushing).

Biggest Injury Questions for All 32 teams in Week 11

Kansas City Chiefs

Sammy Watkins (foot) and LB Anthony Hitchens (rib) will be available against the Rams after missing last week's game. Watkins in particular would be a welcome addition against a high-scoring opponent. Watkins either didn't play or played little in Kansas City's two lowest-scoring games of the season. -- Adam Teicher

Los Angeles Rams

Cooper Kupp, who tore his ACL on Sunday against the Seahawks and will be out for the remainder of the season. Josh Reynolds is expected to start in Kupp's absence. Reynolds also filled in when Kupp was sidelined for two weeks with a knee sprain. -- Lindsey Thiry

PFT’s Week 11 picks

Chiefs at Rams

MDS’s take: Maybe the best game of this NFL season. Call it a hunch, but I think the Chiefs pull off the road upset.

MDS’s pick: Chiefs 31, Rams 28.

Florio’s take: The Rams’ defense isn’t great, but it’s good enough to slow down the Chiefs’ offense a little more than the Chiefs’ defense will slow down the Rams’ offense.

Florio’s pick: Rams 41, Chiefs 38.

NFL Week 11 game picks: Rams edge Chiefs; Cowboys stay hot

MONDAY, NOV. 19

8:15 p.m. ET (ESPN) | Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (Los Angeles)

Well, what was once an international game has become a home affair for the Rams. A lot of folks watching this game will be concerned about the Chiefs' defense facing perhaps the most dynamic offense in the league. The Rams rank first in net yards per pass attempt (8.6), first-down efficiency (percent of plays gaining four or more yards), 10-yard plays (183), lowest percentage of drives going three-and-out (8.2) and pass plays going for 20 or more yards (50). They are so effective on first down that the success makes the whole operation manageable for Jared Goff. The Chiefs also rank 31st in stopping offenses from gaining 4-plus yards on first down. Thus, at least in this game, first down will be more important than third down. That is a pro football rarity. The Chiefs will be asking a lot of Patrick Mahomes. Look for Andy Reid to call for several designed roll-outs and misdirection plays to neutralize, or at least tame, Aaron Donald's impact.

Tips for Week 11 NFL picks: Something strange about Chiefs-Rams line, teaser of the week and more

As you may have heard, the Chiefs are playing the Rams in the biggest matchup of the season, and rather than the game taking place in Mexico City, field conditions have moved the game to Los Angeles. You probably already know that the total for the game is higher than we've ever seen for an NFLgame, but when the spread reopened at several sportsbooks, it revealed something pretty shocking about the Rams.

The standard home-field advantage for teams is considered to be three points, though it can vary from team to team based on home/road splits and other factors. So if you get two teams that the sportsbooks consider equal, you'll see the home team favored by three points. That's what happened in the Jaguars-Colts game in Week 10, and the Colts did in fact win by three points.

Chiefs at Rams (-3.5)

Home-field advantage: 3 points
Power rating line: Rams -3
Lookahead line: Rams -1.5

KC LAR
Record vs. spread 8-2 4-6
Yards per play differential 0.9 0.9
Points per drive offense rank 2 3
Points per drive defense rank 25 24
Weighted DVOA 41.7 31.8
Pass offense DVOA rank 1 3
Pass defense DVOA rank 12 13
Run offense DVOA rank 4 1
Run defense DVOA rank 32 29

The Rams were at one point only the home team in name for what was scheduled to be a Mexico City showdown, but poor field conditions have shifted this one to Los Angeles. The Rams were favored by 2.5 when this game was on a neutral field, but it reopened at Rams -3.5 once the move was announced. Do the Rams only get one point for home-field advantage? Is the fact that they were training at altitude and the Chiefs weren't baked into such a small move?

At any rate, the Rams have actually fallen well short of expectations lately, covering just once in their last seven games. That hasn't been the case for the Chiefs, who sport the second-best offensive DVOA ever tracked through 10 games behind the juggernaut Patriots of 2007. They've failed to cover just once all year, and Andy Reid has historically been great against the spread on the road -- the Chiefs are an NFL-best 32-16 ATS on the road since Reid took over. The Rams can afford to lose the least with the Saints peaking, but the Chiefs might just be the better team here.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid gave his thoughts on ESPN’s Week 11 edition of Monday Night Football being moved from Mexico City to Los Angeles.

“We’ll be there, we are going to show up,” Reid told reporters during his Thursday conference call. “We are playing there, so let’s get ready to play against a great football team.”

Reid didn’t seem too caught up in where Monday’s game would be played, saying the schedule switch up just means the matchup with the 9-1 Rams will resemble more of a true road game.

NFL Week 11 questions: Is Monday night's Chiefs-Rams Game a Preview of Super Bowl LIII?

One fascinating matchup highlights Week 11, but there are plenty of storylines to sort through — including first place in a division totally up for grabs.

Here are the key questions for Week 11.

1. Who will win the midseason Super Bowl?
The Rams and Chiefs, two of the best teams and most potent offenses, square off Monday night in what could very well be a preview of Super Bowl LIII in February. Both teams are 9-1, making it just the fifth time since the 1970 merger that teams with one loss or fewer meet this late in a season. The Chiefs rank second in the NFL in scoring offense (35.3 points a game); the Rams rank third (33.5). Two of the game’s top young passers in Patrick Mahomes — who ranks first in yardage (3,150) — and Jared Goff — who ranks second (3,134) — will battle for the first time in their careers. Skill position players like Todd Gurley, Tyreek Hill, and Travis Kelce figure to be big. But this game might come down to the defense that limits more explosive plays than the other. That edge might go to L.A., which has been better and is tied for ninth in the league with 26 sacks.

2. Will moving Monday's game to Los Angeles affect either team?
The other storyline in this game was the NFL’s decision Tuesday to relocate it from Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca due to poor field conditions. Because it’s scheduled as a home game for the Rams, it’s being moved to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The Rams had just arrived in Colorado Springs on Monday to train for the altitude they were expecting in Mexico City. The team will stay there and practice throughout the week, so even though they’ll play at home Monday night, this could have a bit of an away game feel for them. For the Chiefs, not much changes other than their eventual destination — though it’s more than likely that the crowd in the Coliseum will be predominantly favoring the Rams. Unless any Chiefs fans who were planning on making the trip down to Mexico City can change their travel plans, expect a lot of blue and gold.

Good enough for soccer but not good enough for football.

Wonder if people with tickets in Mexico get option to use ticket in LA?

Those who bought scalped ticket are screwed.

Oh boy, what a big surprise that Woods is a good blocker.

He only did that almost all the time while he was here.

...such an under-noticed but valuable trait for a WR in this league.

Not far behind:  RBs who can pick up blitzes.

That was one of the reasons I liked him as I stated in multiple posts while he was here.  His opposite, not so much.

BTW, I seem to a remember a little game between the K-Gun Offense and the West Coast Offense in the Bay area during the '91 season that was pretty darn good and didn't have any punts.

I won a tape of that game in a raffle. I think it was on the Bills bus to Hall of Fame for Jimbo or Thurman.

I wonder about the financial ramifications of this. How much did the league lose? What about all the fans who booked tickets to go see the game and now have to cancel travel and hotel plans?

At the minimum the stadium should be able to put game on big screen but I know NFL dislikes this due to complaints from network partners.

Amari Cooper's Impact; Chargers' Swagger; Waiting for Gronk

As the 2018 NFL season rolls on into Week 11, NFL.com's network of reporters collects the hottest news and notes from across the league, including:

-- Marcus Peters' showdown with the Chiefs.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS: Ford feeling fine with surgically repaired back. Chiefs pass rusher Dee Ford is tied for third in the NFL with 9 sacks and is tied for second in quarterback hits with 20. He told me recently that he has "caught people off guard" this season because of how quickly he recovered physically from spine surgery, which he underwent last year, mainly because of the magnitude of the surgery, which Ford described as something most guys don't come back from. He also revealed that it wasn't his first back surgery.

"A lot of people don't know that I had my first procedure in 2011 in college and came back and (coaches were) blown away when (they) saw me healthy," Ford said, of his return to the field from season-ending microdisectomy surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back while at Auburn. "So I knew the second time around, I'm even smarter this time around in how I process, train and take care of my body. I knew it would be the same result all over again."

Ford says the issues with his back should not return, and he feels as healthy as ever. Good news, considering he's currently in a contract year. Ford is loving his time in Kansas City right now, but he doesn't have a clue where he will be after this season, when his rookie contract will run out.

"I'm enjoying the process, and the results will take care of itself," the former first-round pick told me. "This is sports, so if it calls for me to be somewhere else, it is what it is. If I'm here, I'm here. Change is inevitable, so it's a business, and I'll be ready for whatever situation."

If he keeps playing the way he's playing, he should be rewarded handsomely, wherever he lands.

Chiefs not sweating Peters revenge game. The offseason trade that sent cornerback Marcus Petersfrom Kansas City to the Los Angeles Rams left many people wondering how the Chiefs' defense would fare without a two-time Pro Bowl cornerback. The way Peters has played this season -- a year in which he's been repeatedly burned by opposing wide receivers -- has made several of those same onlookers think the Chiefs got the better of that deal, which landed them a fourth-round pick in last year's draft and a second-rounder in 2019. Now the Rams and Chiefs will line up against each other in a meeting of 9-1 teams on Monday night.

One thing the Chiefs believe is that it doesn't matter how Peters has played until this point. He'll be ready, and so will they. "He has seen all of our stuff and knows what we do," said Chiefs head coach Andy Reid. "We have seen him. You just end up going and playing, then. He plays, we do our thing and see what goes on there."
