If Browns/Allen rumor has merit......

Recommended Posts

If the rumor is true, I think the Browns take him at #1, because they don't want to take the risk of the Giants or Jets picking him.  Yes, the rumors also say the Giants like

Darnold and the Jets like Rosen, but I don't think the Browns know that for certain.  I don't think the Browns are inclined to trade out of #4 because they can theoretically get the best player in the draft at #4 if the top QBs go 1,2,3, whether you think the best player in the draft is Barkley, Chubb or Nelson.

After that, it gets tougher to predict (not to say the first four picks are certain by any means).  Denver could go Mayfield, but it makes more sense to me that they get the top guard (Nelson) to protect Keenum.  If Indy stays at #6, I think they'll be happy to take Chubb.  Tampa has plenty of needs, including where the highest rated remaining players are ranked.  I think maybe they go with Minkah Fitzpatrick here.  I would slot Denzel Ward to Chicago. Tremaine Edmunds to the 49ers.  Vita Vea to the Raiders.   Roquon Smith to the Dolphins.  That would make Mayfield available to the Bills at 12.

Smoke screens everywhere. Allens gonna go to a team that doesnt need him to start for a few years, same with Darnold, and thats either the Browns, Giants or broncos.  That leaves us and the Jets competing for Mayfield and Rosen, the two QBs this draft that can prob start week 1.

Peter Kings column is much more of a free flowing thoughts piece than any sort of news reporting.  And "a friend of Dorsey" is putting that out there so Browns fans are ready when they take Allen instead of Darnold.  It's absolutely planted on purpose, Peter knows that, the Browns have no reason to smoke screen anything if they are leaking Allen it's so their fans know what to expect and don't riot over the choice.

People need to accept Allen has the best physical tools in the QB class and comes from a system that's developed pro QBs.  Oklahoma & USC have a reputation to turning out NFL busts at the QB position.

The Browns have plenty of reason to smokescreen.

Any GM worth a crap will explore ALL OPTIONS on the table.  So even if Dorsey is 99% sure he is staying at the #1 Pick and taking his top QB, he would be irresponsible not to listen to the offers coming in for Pick #1.

The Browns don't know which QBs the other teams (Giants, Jets, Bills, etc.) actually prefer the most, except for the lies and speculation being put out into the sports media.  Everyone says the Giants are only interested in Sam Darnold.  But what if the Giants ACTUALLY want Josh Allen really bad, and are just hiding it well?  By suddenly telling the world they LOVE Allen, that could prompt the Giants (or another team) to panic and possibly make an offer for the #1 Pick.  Then the Browns move down 1-2 spots, get extra picks and still get Darnold.

Does this mean the Bills have Allen as their #1 QB?

Hear this out.....since we're all dying for another trade....and it's just fun to speculate.

Could it explain why we haven't traded up into the 4 or perhaps even #1 spot?

If the Browns want Allen they can surely get him at 4, right?  The Giants like Darnold and the Jets Rosen.  If this is the belief then why haven't we traded up to say 6-8 then make a huge offer for #1 overall with Cleveland.

Shouldn't Cleveland be listening to all offers for that first pick feeling pretty good that at 4 you'll get Allen (best case for them per their board; or one of Darnold Rosen and Baker).  Don't you do this all day?  Cleveland still has #4.  Then another pick between 6 and 8.  And probably next years first and more.  This actually makes more sense then trading the #4.

But you don't because you feel and I bet you know the Bills want Allen.  Or someone in that top 3 does.

I think the Bills have Allen #1.

I just don't see Browns drafting Allen .... they are very much under fire for not getting a top QB in recent years.  There is no way they will Gamble with such a risky pick like Allen.  This is a smokescreen .... likely being perpetuated by the Giants trying inflate the value of their #2.

Browns will play it safe ... rightly or wrongly Darnold seems to be the consensus #1 and Browns cannot afford to play it to clever there.

Here is the problem with your post and many others just like it.

A trade is NOT a one sided negotiation.  Browns have already stated they are picking a QB #1 and don't intend on trading the pick.  So to draw any conclusion to who the Bills want or dont want based on the fact a trade has not happened with someone is flawed logic to say the least.

Plus, everyone needs to prepare themselves for the fact that no trade into the top 5 is likely to happen before the draft.  Giants likely wont make a decision until they see who the Browns pick, same with Broncos who probably want to see how it unfolds ahead of them before they make a final decision.  We might be able to entice the Bucs at 7 ahead of the draft since its only moving back 5 spots, but I don't think a top 5 move will be possible until draft night.

I doubt it.

But who knows? These days the Bills' brass has done an exceptional job of keeping everything under wraps.

That said, I don't think the Browns inclination to take Allen (or whomever) at #1 has any bearing on what they believe the Bills may do. After all, as of now, the Bills are picking at #12, right? Also, the last several QBs that the Browns drafted were AFTER they had already drafted one or more players that year: Kizer, Kessler, Manziel, Weeden, Quinn, Frye... going all the way back to Couch. Something tells me that Dorsey wants to set a new tone by making a statement and drafting the QB of choice with the #1 pick overall.

My thinking exactly, and I don't think you wait unitl free agency is over, and all the QBs are gone save one (AJ), pay him 5 M/yr, because you're interested in a project draft pick (Allen). The Browns are another story, they may feel like TT can give them a 1-2 years.

I think A.J. was a last resort for the Bills after trading TT as their UFA options ran out pretty quick. And I don't believe any of the top 4 QBs are stepping right in and taking over and certainly would not consider starting one behind the current Bills' OL a la Peterman. Bills need to get the holes filled before they stick a new QB in there.

And A.J. just might be a pleasant surprise ...
