UB wins again!

With their win over Marshall, the Bulls hang on to the #3 seed in the MAC East. This is important becuase top 3 seeds get a bye in the conference tourney. Two games left: on the road against Ohio (a team they should beat) then a tough game at home against #2 seed Akron.

18 wins ties the school record for a season. Congrats to Coach Witherspoon and crew. Let's not stop now.

Good win indeed. That Ohio game on the road isn't a gimme. Ohio has a decent record in the MAC too, and beat us at UB a month ago.

I would expect the Bulls to dominate the final home game of the year (senior night) vs. a very good Akron team, a lot like last years final home game vs. Kent St.

Go Bulls!

I think they are really hitting their stride at the right time, and the fact that they actually "blew out" Marshall last night is a VERY good sign. Nice to have a non-nail biter for a change.

The Ohio game will be tough, though revenge for the home loss should be a factor. And then the last home game against Akron is essentially a playoff game, especially given the fact that Akron beat Miami last night and tightened things up at the top of the division.

It would be great if they could win the conference tournament and get that automatic bid. If they win out through to the automatic bid, I think they would have be seed right around 10, maybe higher. I certainly think this team is capable of winning out, winning the conference tourney, and even taking a game or two in the NCAA's. But that's getting way ahead of ourselves.

So if they lose at Ohio and then beat Akron, do they still have a shot at the #3 seed and a bye to Cleveland?

There's no way in hell they will get a #10 seed. That is a good thing. And on top of that, hell will freeze over before they get a higher than #10 seed. And this is good.

Trust me, as an avid follower of the MAC, you hope for the #12 seed. There have been MUCH MUCH better teams in previous years from the MAC, and they have gone in as twelve seeds.

What cracks me up is that people get infatuated with being like an 8 or 9 seed. Those are the worse seeds in the tourney, because #1 awaits you in the next round.

The best place to be is right around #12. To advance to the round of 32, you'd have to basically beat a #20-25 ranked team in the country, and then do it again to get to the round of 16.

This is usually why #12 seeds win. You have all of these under-rated conference champs who match up with a bottom tier top-25 team who is probably only ranked based on reputation.

Relax about seeds.....I know for a fact that the MAC usually gets a #12 seed, or somewhere close to that out of respect. The MAC usually does well in the NCAA's.

IF UB gets in, you hope to be seeded 12.

Can someone brief me on the rules of the MAC tourney?  How many teams make it, who gets byes, etc.

251329[/snapback]

The top three teams in the MAC get a bye into the Quarterfinal Round of Eight teams.

The other teams, who are seeded 4-13 battle it out on campus sites to see who advances to the Quarterfinal Round of Eight.

In the first round, seeds 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 get home games on campus sites. This will produce 5 winners who then move on with the top three seeds to make 8 teams advancing to the quarters.

Then, it's on to Cleveland for some pretty good basketball!

I posted that yesterday, and there's no way in hell UB gets anywhere near a #10 seed if they get in.

Also, that doesn't include the last three years in which the MAC even has more success. Kent State's run to the Elite Eight isn't indicated in what you posted.

The MAC is actually down this year. It was also down from what it normally is last year too.

UB simply doesn't have any big time wins to get them that seed. They also have no tournament history, and they won't be the conference champs. NO WAY IN HELL would they be #10.

Matter of fact, if UB doesn't win the MAC but wins the MAC auto qualifier, they would most likely be #13. It's just how it goes.

Again though, that is a good thing.

You guys are new to this I can tell. You have to think, a few years ago (2002), Ball State was a 20 win MAC team, with victories over UCLA, Kansas, and Butler. They also, just before halftime, was leading Duke. They had the Duke lead in single digits for much of the second half, before bowing out late, and that didn't get them in the NCAA tourney. UCLA, Kansas and Duke were all in the top 10.

It's a tough spot to be in, but IF you can sneak in, MAC teams usually are the one's to do some damage.

New to following the NCAA tourney? No.  New to having my alma mater having a legit shot at getting in at this point in the season?  Definitely, yes.

I hear ya. I hope you make it, outside of Ball State of course. I always root for the MAC in the tourney, no matter who gets in.

I'm also pretty versed at MAC history when it comes to this thing!

Good Luck!

Yep...me too. Watching them on ESPN2 a couple of weeks ago was absolutely amazing. When I was up there, UB's biggest game was the Buff State game.
