Virginians better keep their pants up

Virginians who wear their pants so low their underwear shows may want to think about investing in a stronger belt.

The state's House of Delegates passed a bill Tuesday authorizing a $50 fine for anyone who displays his or her underpants in a "lewd or indecent manner."

Del. Lionell Spruill Sr., a Democrat who opposed the bill, had pleaded with his colleagues to remember their own youthful fashion follies.

During an extended monologue Monday, he talked about how they dressed or wore their hair in their teens. On Tuesday, he said the measure was an unconstitutional attack on young blacks that would force parents to take off work to accompany their children to court just for making a fashion statement.

"This is a foolish bill, Mr. Speaker, because it will hurt so many," Spruill said before the measure was approved 60-34. It now goes to the state Senate.

as a youth pastor who constantly battles on the front lines between coolness and appropriateness -- this is an unenforceable, knee jerk reaction to inappropriate wear. Immodesty in dress is not about fashion, it's about innocence and decency. The way to fix it, though, is not through legislation. If they do this law, they'll need to pass laws against cleavage and all sorts of other "jiggly things" that hang out. In fact, there is no way to force a change. In my area, teens are starting to get fed up themselves with the revealing attire. A change won't happen until the people themselves begin to change.

Welcome to United Socialist States of America. We're we take your individual freedoms away one at a time, right under your nose, and nobody ejects until next thing you know you have no freedoms anymore.

Sure this might not seem like anything big. Infact it might even seem like a good idea, but it infringes on our basic freedoms such as dressing how we want to.

I personally think wearing your pants that low looks ridiculious, but to some people thats the style. I wouldn't want to fine them for dressing how they want to dress, just like I wouldn't want someone telling me, what to eat, when to be home, how much to drink, If I can smoke cigarettes or not, who I can sleep with etc etc etc.

This is just a shame that citizens of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA "OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE, AND FOR THE PEOPLE" are allowing basic individual freedoms to be taken away. Just wait till they move up and take things away that are more meaningful to you.

60-34?????? Sixty people voted for it, and not one stood up and pointed out that legislating the proper wearing of pants is a thoroughly ridiculous and grotesque waste of time and money? Each and every one of those legislators ought to be taken out and shot for the greater good of society.

Either one can be fined for indecent exposure or they can't. If Virginia wants to include an ass hanging out of a person's jeans into their definition of indecent exposure I hardly think this means the Gestapo is waiting for us around the corner.

It doesn't say anything about "ass" in the article, only the display of underwear.

I'm glad people are starting wake up and see this nonsense for what it is. The USA is becoming one giant HOA dictated by the Moral Majority. Our freedoms are eroding quicker from within than any outside influence can effect.

Please can we maintain a separate church and state ? And we look at the muslim countries as funny because they are dominated by the Muslim religion. Well look in our own backyard folks !

it's called underwear for a reason.

All of you that are freaking out about losing "freedoms" are over reacting. If someone should have the right to show 90% of their boxers, why shouldn't the guy on the corner be able to whip his d--k out? IT'S A FREE COUNTRY! When you stop Hobo Joe from whippin' out his package, your treading on everyone's rights! <_<

Please.

Such wisdom.

People can walk around in bathing suits and no one cares. I bet if there was some hot chick walking down the street with a bit of thongs sticking above her jeans you would be drooling.

Obvious difference between low riding pants and whipping your dick out, so writing that sentence is pretty ridiculous.

It's the point of the matter that pisses me off. These guys have spent time writing up, debating, and passing a bill that is petty and takes away peoples simple rights. It's nothing short of pathetic.

Every generation of teens express their individuality by dressing alike. This is old hat. When I look at photos of myself back then, I cringe. So will they as they mature.

That kids are jerks is nothing new. And those left-leaning idiots who want these tykes to vote are either nuts, stupid, or clever communists.

But where do you draw the line?

OK, wearing your pants around your knees is OK, and letting everyone see your boxers... but now, what happens when the boxers start to drop? Wait, its a FREE country, we can do what we want!

Please, you people are so frigging paranoid that the "government is out to control everyone". No, in this case, they are out to nip a situation in the bud.

Remember, these are elected Virginian officials. Blame the voters.

Better they waste time writing up, debating, and passing a bill about pulling up one's pants then waste time writing up, debating, and passing a bill about how they feel the money one makes is really the states and so why not increase taxes by X.

Thanks for answering my question. Ladies and Gents, here is an example of what liberal arts colleges add to our "culture".
