Gronkowski out for the year with ACL and MCL injuries

It was TJ Ward who hit Gronk. Different guy from the EJ hit. It was definitely not a cheap shot on Gronk. The NFL has given DBs little choice but going low on receivers with they way they have penalized high hits in these split-second, bang-bang plays.

To a man the players will tell you they'd rather get hit in the head and be out a week or two than get hit in the knees and tear their ACL and be out a year...

Crazy thinking with all the longterm damage shown to be caused by concussions and head hits, but that's how they think...

Can't argue with any of what you posted, but the NFL is legislating high hits out of the league. Not sure how defenders are supposed to tackle anymore with the extra protections being afforded to WRs/TEs and QBs. Jairus Byrd still has a WTF look on his face from the PF penalty on him yesterday for taking down Glennon.

One of the hardest hits I've ever seen in 2013. The impact had to be tremendous, a 200 lbs ST colliding at 15-20 mph with a 6'6'' 260 TE. ESPN Sports Science should do one of their scientific breakdowns to determine the force that Gronk's leg was put under. Read somewhere it takes 500 lbs of force to tear an ACL, clearly the force of this hit would be much greater - off the charts.

@AlbertBreer

Was asked about the Gronkowski hit, and what league might do. It has come up. Over the next couple tweets, I'll detail where this could go.

The competition committee has looked at adding rules protecting defenseless receivers from low hits, and will work thru ideas at the combine

BUT proposals are more likely to be more centered on hits like Dustin Keller took -- while in the act of catching -- than the one Gronk took

I asked Goodell directly about such low hits being a result of rules against high hits. He said NFL data shows no increase in knee injuries.

So if a any rule goes in, the sense I get is it'd be to protect a receiver in the act of catching, but not simply running in the open field.

Gronk also received a concussion on that, it wasn't an illegal hit, it's what players are forced into doing by idiotic rules

How long before the NFL become touch football? :unsure:

Pretty soon. The personal foul call on Edelman's TD in the last Patsy* game is the future. Pretty soon you won't be able to hit a WR at all until he's secured the ball and starts running with it. Means that TD catches will be almost automatic.
