Anyone who doesn't want to draft Nugent

Rookie kicker missed 40 yd FG last weekend and Bolts are home for the rest of the playoffs. This fascination with a rookie K is mind-boggling.

Nugent is the best kicking prospect since Jason Elam - who worked out pretty well for the Broncos. He'll likely be in the NFL for the next 15 years

I think the biggest weakness to the Bills special teams was the kicker. I think that Mike Nugent would be an impact player right away and would make thae special teams more dominant than they already are. His kickoffs alone would certainly affect field posion. He also was 8 of 9 for his career over 50 yards. He is also from a cold weather school.

If the Bills trade Henry to the Dolphins I say trade him for their 3rd rounder(Chicago's pick) in 2005 and try to get a 4th rounder from them in 2006 that could be moved up to a 3rd rounder in 2006 depending on Henry's production. They should then use the 3rd round pick they get from the Dolphins on Nugent

I think the Bills should use their 2nd rounder on an OL or a CB depending on what they get in free agency. They should get a WR in free agency. With their own 3rd round pick they should take an OL, CB, or a OLB. They should draft a running back on the 2nd day of the draft to back up Magahee.

If the Bills can get a 2nd round pick for Henry then they should use it or their own 2nd rounder to get Nugent

What I don't get is, if this guy's as good as everyone's saying, what makes anyone think he'll be around in the 3rd round (let alone the 2nd)? The Raiders drafted Janikowski in the 1st round.

I'll admit I have no idea who this guy is, other than what I've read here. But if he's as great as everyone here thinks he is, why would he still be around?

I doubt any team will take a kicker in the first round. The Raiders are nutty like that (Ray Guy was also a first round selection).

Nugent likely won't be around in the third.

Any comparisons that people make between Nugent and Keading are just silly. Keading was considered only an average NFL prospect and had the same problem in college with botching clutch kicks.

Nugent on the other hand is seen as the best kicker prospect in the last decade, and had built up a reputation for being the most clutch kicker in recent college football history. The kid is just amazing at every aspect of being a kicker, whether it be nailing 50+ yarders (which he can do consistently) or getting touchbacks.

Now, I agree the Bills also need another CB, a 3rd WR and more help on the O-Line, but I think those things can be addressed via free agency or later picks in the Draft. Mike Nugent will be a Pro Bowler, an even better Jason Elam. Here is a guy who is a weapon at his position and can win games for us...can that be said about a backup guard or a 3rd WR that we would get as an alternative to Nugent with our 2nd round selection? I think not.

If he is there by the Bills 2nd round pick, they'd be foolish not to draft him. Damn foolish.

on the clock

Mike Nugent

Kicker

Ohio State

Height: 5'10"

Weight: 180 lbs.

Stats:

2001: 27/29 XP 7/14 FG

2002: 45/46 XP 25/28 FG

2003: 38/38 XP 16/19 FG

2004: 27/27 XP 20/23 FG

Mike Nugent has a lot of experience as a kicker, having started all four of his seasons with the Ohio State Buckeyes. He was the recipient of the 2004 Lou Groza award, given to the nation's best kicker. He has a cannon for a leg and consistently makes kicks from 50 yards and beyond. He is now the Buckeyes all-time leading scorer and holds 19 other records including most field goals made from 50 yards. His teammates honored him this year by making him the team’s most valuable player for his 2004 performance. He is the only kicker in Ohio State history to receive this honor. He is also among the best in the country as a kickoff specialist, with just under 62% of his kickoffs being touchbacks as a senior. Mike Nugent is one of the best prospects to come out of college at the kicker position in recent memory. He could be a 3rd round pick on draft day.

While I'd love to have a Nugent on this team, there are so many other positions of need. The only two first-day picks TD used on the O-line were Jonas Jennings (3rd round) and Mike Williams. I'd like to see what TD could do with a second round pick at OG. We also need to look at TE, CB, DE, WR, even C.

I agree that special teams are important, but your kicker is only on the field for about 1/4 of special teams plays.

1/4 the time you are punting

1/4 the time you are receiving a punt

1/4 the time you are returning a kick or trying to block a FG

1/4 the time you are attempting a FG or kicking off

Given the choice between upgrading ourselves at kicker and upgrading our O-line, I'd choose the latter.

Hew hasn't kicked one FG in the pros and its just different.

Plus the tee for kickoffs is way different in the pros than it is in college, making it much tougher to get under the ball and drive it deep.

Plus I do recall a rookie San Diego kicker missing a critical FG.

Bills should just skip the draft. None of those players have played a down in the NFL. Too risky.
