Goodell floats novel idea for replacing kickoffs

After getting a full explanation of how it works and really thinking about it I think it would be a better option than having the majprity of kicks kneeled down in the endzone. Plus if you have a good offense with a good QB you have better chance of converting 4th and 15 then recovering an on side kick.

Manipulating Goodell on this point is the first step in my master plan of eliminating the kicking game altogether :devil::lol::devil:

At first I said no but now I realize my plan is coming to fruition. B-)

not if you are down a score with a few minutes to go.

If you score and you are ahead, you will punt 100% of the time. If you are behind, you would rather do an onside kick. It's about 25% likely you get the ball back. 4th and 15 is prohibitive.

Sean Gregory of TIME writes that one of the options being considered for replacing kickoffs entails giving the ball to the team that would have been kicking off at its own 30, automatically facing a fourth down and 15 yards to go. The team can then choose to punt or go for it, via fake punt or otherwise.

In other words, the kickoff would be replaced with the punt, and the onside kick would be replaced with a fourth-down conversion roughly half the distance of Ray Rice’s recent catch-and-run.

Ok, as I first started reading this I hated the idea. But, I have to admit the 4th and 15 option to go for it might be exciting in close games instead of onside kicks. It could make for a lot of wild finishes...although I can see the Bills being victims of this a lot as we cant seem to stop any 3rd and longs or 4th and longs LOL.

So I dont know how to feel about it...taking the Kick Off out seems so wrong, its such a big part of football, not to mention its going to eliminate jobs for many return specialists in the NFL. As a purist I am against it, but from an excitement point of view the 4th and long instead of an onside would be more exciting as onsides have such a low success rate as it is.

When they know you are going to onside kick the percentage goes way down, 4rth n 15 is more likely, plus there are crazy trick plays you can pull out of the bag, like hook and ladder, homerun throwback and the crazy stuff Boise ST did to beat Oklahoma a few years back.

NFL will consider other kickoff changes in offseason:

NFL executive V.P. of football operations Ray Anderson tells NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport that the powers-that-be also will discuss moving the kickoff point another five yards forward, to the 40. (Last year, kickoffs were moved from the 30 to the 35.) The other proposal would entail the placement of a weight limit on kickoff and kick-return teams.

That was the percentage when the onside is anticipated.

You would take your chances with the hook and ladder or the statue of liberty if you've just scored to get within three? No thanks.
