K John Potter

 Come on, man. They just re-signed Lindell this offseason. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and presume you're just not thinking this through.

And I think we can give you the benefit of the doubt that you are just too naive to believe Lindell COULDN'T be cut.

I didn't state what my opinion on the competition is. I did, however, make the point that the Bills want competition at every position, regardless of whether they think its a position that needs improvement or not.

Competition makes everyone better, regardless of who you expect to win.

Thanks for the information on Potter. Keep us updated with how well those guys are doing. I don't think Lindell's spot on this roster is as cut and dry like most think. Just my opinion. But one thing for sure is Potter makes the roster for kick offs - eBALL - HE won't be on stashed on the PS. At least I believe those are the sentiments Nix gave off.

Tell us. Who was the more accurate kicker in Training Camp Practice #5 too Mikey??

Lindell was short on the 59 yarder and hit the uprights on the 55 yarder. Potter nailed all 4 from what I saw. So I would give it to Potter for that day.

With respect to competition there are two types -- trying to find starters, and trying to find quality depth. Did the Bills bring Chris Douglas into camp to provide competition for Fred Jackson and CJ Spiller, or is he there to compete with Tashard Choice and Johnny White?

I'm not disputing that competition makes everyone better, but Buddy's statement about competition in general when talking to a radio host doesn't take into account his specific comments about Potter as a KO specialist when he was drafted. Go back and read the articles, and then also find DeHaven's comments.

Obviously if Lindell looks shaky and Potter makes everything he looks at, the Bills will take note. I will stand by my earlier comments, however, that suggesting Potter is putting Lindell's job in jeopardy because he's making long FG attempts at training camp is a little silly.

I'm not naive, and I didn't say Lindell couldn't be cut. I said your implication Lindell's job is in jeopardy because a rookie K made some FGs in practice is misguided.

There are very few players on the team that don't have a job that's in jeopardy. I don't think Lindell is a lock. And if this is any taste of what Potter and Lindell have to offer, Potter should get the job. That's what I am implying. I didn't say Potter should win the starting spot right now did I?

Your first post said "why not give Lindell's roster spot to a guy like Carrington, Troup, D. Edwards, Aiken, Hagan or anybody else that deserves it. Seems smart to me." This implies that Lindell should not make the active roster and the spot should go to Potter.

Please now say that I have somehow misinterpreted what you said or somehow focus on the "right now" part and ignore the statement you so clearly made in your opening post without a timeline attached to it.

This is the second time in a few days that you have started a bogus argument, got beaten down by the posters here and have had to resort to aggressiveness to fend out valid arguments against your posts. I suggest you take a different tack in your posts else you will be the new whipping boy here and trust me some of us sadists will get great glee in that situation.

Yeah? You must not have caught on to the first sentence in the post. I said IF he outperforms Lindell, then it would make sense to save a roster spot and let go of Lindell. I feel like I'm speaking to a child and have to explain everything specifically. If they were even in terms of how they have been performing through out training camp they should give it to Potter then and just release Lindell if not just for the many other beneficial reasons besides saving a roster spot.

And I don't really care about your opinion on my posts, or anybody else that has animosity towards some things I would like to bring up to people. Some people you can never satisfy their superiority complex. If anybody needs to be the "whipping boys" its the people on here that knock other people down for speaking their opinions. It's not like the things I've posted about are ridiculous and make no sense. So I guess I suggest back to you to mind your business when it comes to my posting. Thanks big guy.

If John Potter completely out performs Rian Lindell, which he has to this point, how does Chan Gailey NOT start him over Rian Lindell? Camp is to figure out which players are best suited to make the team, so shouldn't the better performer be rewarded with a starting nod?

I know it's early in camp but Potter hasn't missed a single field goal. He's already going to have a roster spot just for his leg on kick offs. So why not give Lindell's roster spot to a guy like Carrington, Troup, D. Edwards, Aiken, Hagan or anybody else that deserves it. Seems smart to me.

" Both Rian Lindell and John Potter tried field goals from 45 yards, 49 yards, 55 yards and 59 yards. Potter nailed them all and his 59-yard field goal sailed right thru the middle. Lindell hit the upright on the 55-yard field goal and appeared to be a bit short on the the 59-yard field goal."

I personally am hoping Potter takes Lindell's roster spot. The better player should always win in situations like this. No matter the tenure of the incumbent.

Ok, but he would need to outplay him by a LOT. You don't just say, "Ok, well we've got this 13 year vet with an 81% success rate, but the new kid had a better training camp so we're going in that direction."

Past results count. Known commodities are valuable in a sport with so many moving parts.

No way Lindell goes this year, no matter how well Potter does or poorly he kicks. As stated numerous times, the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. He's proven to have a decent leg, accurate and grown to understand the winds of the Ralph. He's been reasonably reliable as a clutch performer and I believe the FO sees it, hence the extension.

The tough choice for Buddy is whether to take a roster spot for KO duty or to another position. Frankly, I don't know if Potters' performance is even going to be a deciding factor as one of the other guys shining SO bright that they are forced to redistribute the 1/53 in the others' favor.

Give your condescending attitude a rest.

You started out your post with "If John Potter completely out performs Rian Lindell, which he has to this point,..." In that very sentence you implied he has 'completely outperformed' Lindell with very little solid information to back up your sentence. This entire post then tees off of that statement and builds up at various points to how Lindell can become expendable. Others have rightly pointed out that making a few kicks in the beginning of training camp, under no pressure of real game situations, with little wind do not even begin to start the argument of replacing Lindell with Potter.

Lastly, "mind your business when it comes to my posting " ! Really ? This is an internet message board. It is not your business or mine. Once you post here, you are implicitly asking for a discussion which you have now turned into an argument. You are the one who needs an attitude adjustment.

I agree that it makes a lot of sense to groom Potter for the job - and use his booming leg on kickoffs and perhaps a few long FG tries along the way. With Lindell's contract, we'd take a salarry cap hit if we cut him this year (current cap number is $1.9 million, would be $3.6 million if we cut him), so that's one more reason it's not too likely.

Speaking of cutting kickers, though, I haven't heard much about the punters - we'd lose nothing, cap wise, if we cut Moorman. Anyone know how the Powell vs Moorman competition is looking? We'd stand to save almost $1.2 million if Powell wins the job.

Ok. Maybe I should speak clearer next time for you. I'm not saying Potter is going to win the job and I didn't mean to IMPLY it was time to. I am hoping he does continue to out perform Lindell in hopes Potter can be our new kicker because he already has a spot on the roster for being a kickoff specialist. Better? And I was specifically asking YOU to mind your business if YOU don't like it :)

Potter has been in big games often in college he is not a complete neophyte. If he is a sure roster spot anyway, I say we take a flyer that he can hit FGs and drop Lindell.

Use the roster spot elsewhere.

It's a flyer that can end up costing games if he's not ready. And you can't just go back out and pick Lindell back up because some team without a solid kicker will make sure he's not unemployed long. There's a reason why Dave Raynor was the best available last year.

This just tweeted by Howard Simon from Gailey:

"Also said would give roster spot to backup kicker John potter as KO specialist if he can make opponent start at 20 yd line all the time."

Not something we really don't already know. Does this imply anything FanInChicago? Can you read in to this for me? jk

One of the best ways to help the defense is to have the other teams offense start from the 20 yd line.

I'm afraid to post in this thread.

Kinda like the scene from "Vacation" when Chevy Chase is deciding whether to jump into the pool with Christie Brinkley? That kind of afraid?

You can skip to 4:00 if you like, but I watched the whole thing. It's Christie Brinkley for cryin' out loud!

Well Beerball, "are you gonna GO FOR IT?"
