Four Downs on Johnny White

Recommended Posts

By now most of us have read all the sterling reviews of Johnny White by writers, teammates, etc.

In a troubled program down in Chapel Hill, White is one of the most respected and well-liked players to suit up for the Tarheels in a long time.

What is the most memorable moment in Johnny White’s college career?

We were playing Clemson this year at home. It was 4th-and-4 and we were in four-minute offense trying to win the game. If we got a first down, game over. If we do not, they get the ball and a chance to win. Our quarterback audibled to an option route with Johnny White one-on-one with DeAndre McDaniel – an All-American safety for them – and Johnny just broke his ankles. He made a great catch and we won the game. It was one of my favorite plays of the year.

His position coach, John Shoop was glowing in his comments about White:

I liked this pick when it was made and like it even more as I read more about him. If Spiller doesn't improve on his blitz pickups, I could see White as a third down back once he learns the offense. If Fred Jackson gets hurt, I think he might turn out to be our between the tackles workhorse back. He sounds like a good locker room guy who can play special teams.

I know this may not be the right forum, but fantasy football wise unless Spiller falls to a later round than I expect, I'll try to draft Jackson a couple rounds later and take a late (20th) round flyer on White.

I diasagree, our staff seems to have a total man crush on CJ Spiller. Johnny is a raw talant that has played all over. IMO he will see spot duty at RB while contributing on special teams and if he developts he is projected to replace the aging Freddy Jackson with CJ in 2-3 years.

Interestingly in every one of those 4-down segments the commentators talk about what high-character guys they are; a trend that's continued from last year.

Nix and Gailey (And, Whaley) appear to be building a team of leaders with high character who are high motor performers with an on-field attitude. When you think about Merriman as a young player he seemed to have all of these qualities when San Diego picked him (Hopefully, he has recovered enough to give us 60-70% of his former level because that will be exciting to see.).

No more slackers ... no more highlight reel one year wonders ... when you look at last year's draft and this year's the potential benefits to the team's success in the coming years will be seen in these picks (Spiller (I think we'll see him add to his 1,000 plus total yards from last year and become someone special) - Troup (watching his 2010 provided a glimpse at a player willing to learn and develop plus the reports of off season work shows he wants to keep getting better ... he added body mass when another guy continues to build a wide receiver body out of what was once a DL) - Alex Carrington has looked good from the start and 2011 will give him a chance to be a force in the DL rotation - Easley was many of our picks for the best rookie in last year's class and he is healthy plus has stayed connected to the team while building his body strength - I have to admit that Ed Wang is still a mystery but OL usually take time to develop and if we ever see a preseason this year we may find out if this intelligent kid can play RT for us - Arthur Moats - You have to love this kid! He gives us everything we want in an OLB and last year was just the beginning. He wants to learn the game, he plays hard, and gives back to the community. He shows a leadership quality and much more (sort of like our 2011 picks) - Danny Batten was looking so good in preseason last year and may be one of those great ST guys and also contribute at LB and Levi Brown is our mystery QB the only thing I know is he looked better than Brohm (And, I admit I was a Brohm guy ... ). Our only toss away was the last pick Kyle Calloway but when you think about the 2010 draft ... there is still a lot of upside and possibilities amongst that group mixed in with this year's selections!

No kidding. My brother-in-law is a Bears season ticket holder, and I remember how he hated having that guy as the offensive coordinator.

Of course, that has nothing to do with how I feel about his comments on White, or how I feel about the pick. Sounds like a good guy to spend a 5th on.

I get it. The Bills should really have a 3rd RB on the roster in case of injury, but he will probably never play RB otherwise. So, it makes sense to draft someone who excels at special teams and can learn to be a role player/third down specialist.

My only question: With all the bills needs, was a third RB the best thing available on the board?

The Bills were fortunate that they didn't suffer an injury at the position in 2010. In other words, it was great that Freddie was able to stay healthy all season.

The Bills are perilously thin at RB. This guy is an excellent football player. We took him in the 5th round.

Who did you want us to take?
