Jim in Anchorage
all my life my right knee can get painful doing what you probably did-climbing and descending. Never occurs on level ground. Go's away on it's own if I keep off it a short while.

boyst
I had this happen to me at a job I had a long time ago...it was an ordeal to say the least. I reported it but it never was filed to corporate too quickly. We were brand new with the corp and no one knew the proceedure. My knee swelled up a little but I could not bend it. It didn't just hurt my knee but it was my quad and hamstring. It felt like everything was locked in my upper leg. I did not miss any weak but they let me work light duty - at this point no one had gotten word of this at the Corp up in Michigan yet. About a week later I am sent in to have a looksee and they gave me 600mg of ibuprofen which at that point did nothing. Anti-inflams only seem to really be effective if taken promptly with the injury. They gave me pain pills but I never took them. It took about 3 weeks to get to where I was comfortable walking, I ended up buying a heavy duty knee brace myself (one like the Olineman wear). It really helped out a lot more then I thought, but was costly. I think about $60. Eventually, work did pay me for it. I also used a neoprene sleeve when just around the house, it helped. About 2 months later the nurse from corp came and was very upset at what happened and said that the company was going to do everything they could to make sure everything was fine with my knee since no one had. They honestly were upset and angry that it was mishandled. They sent me for therapy where I learned a little bit about making sure I am flexible in the hamstrings and such to avoid further discomfort, etc. Also gave me the rubber bands to work out with to build strength. I had been away from the gym about 6 weeks before going back to lift and workout (just avoided legs). Eventually, with pain still present, I asked if I could go see a doctor who specialized in the field to make sure it was not going to be something long term...they suggested an MRI. I got one, nothing wrong. The Dr. could see where there was irritation but nothing looked serious enough to worry about. He said it might hurt another year, maybe 2 and the best thing to do is wear a brace and take tylonol and/or ibuprofen. That has been almost 5 years ago and once in a while I can still feel that little bit of something. That whole thing about when the weather is going to change is true. It took me about 3 months to get back to where I would squat anything over 400lbs. or go running but I was still careful. So, if you ask me, just rest it, keep some ibuprofen in you, and take it easy and let it heal.

Captain Hindsight
Did you twist your knee at all or fall on it? See that's the worst part. I can't pinpoint when it happened. I was just walking and then i noticed the pain when i was going down a hill. All i had was an ace bandage so i wrapped it with that but it was pretty worthless. Walking up and down stairs is pretty painful and sometimes its really stiff. Luckily it doesnt sound as bad as jboy's but its still quite annoying as this school has about 4 million stairs

Nanker
Get an ACE knee brace. It'll give some support to the joint and can keep the patella from moving around too much. You probably strained some part(s) of the joint. Try taking 2 aleve a day.

BillsRUs
I have a partially torn acl from back in coll ege. It hurts when I run on hard concrete or even a weather change. I have found that any analgesic cream with capsiasin alleviates the pain a great deal. But you really should get it looked at, last thing you want is another ligament tear.
