Gailey needs to Study Baltimore's Offense

Not just because we play them next week, but he needs to watch and maybe even dig up some tape from Cam Cameron with the Chargers. I don't care how much of an offensive genius he's supposed to be with the return of Shawn Nelson at TE these are the types of offenses we need to run based of a single good player at TE, WR and RB. Foget about being clever, look at what's worked time and again. Go ahead flame away but just got done watching Balt hang a 7 minute opening drive on the Pats.

I'd be happy if he just realized we have a decent running back or two and actually called more running plays than passing.

I think at times these supposed "offensive geniuses" get to caught up in that mantle and think they have to get overly clever and get away from basic football trying to prove their genius. They forget the best way to prove people right is to put up a W on Sunday.

 

Take last week for instance, while listening to the game Kelso was a Revelation. He was basically questioning offensive calls, saying they were running most of the times on first and needed to mix it up to throw the D off and basically shredding the defense on how frequently players were out of position which allowed huge gains by Jax. The big issue seemed to be the LB playing too close to the LOS and allowing themselves to get occupied and the runner to easily go by into the secondary or because they were too close the TE easily getting by. I'm hopeing there was alot of basic positional drills last week for the D in practice to help with them knowing their assignments.

And yet, when the time comes to build up said OL, they go with a RB. Seemingly hundreds of people said after Spiller's pick was that it'll be hard for the kid to succeed because the OL is so poor, particularly at RT, LT, C and with a guy coming back at RG who suffered a catastrophic injury.

 

The Bills should be developing an identity this year. Toughness and discipline from the TBD tagged offensive genius Gailey are nice catch phrases, but we still don't know what he wants to do offensively, despite having talent at RB. Instead, old ball coach Chan is throwing the ball like Coryell light. For Spiller and Jackson to get anything less than 35 touches a game combined is insanity

Exactly. What I don't get is that for all the talk that it'll take 3 years to rebuild and they have to evaluate talent and they're building through the draft; people forget that this IS year 1 of the Nix Gailey regime. Nix was here all last season. So why is he allowing players to start this year that he should know needs to be cut? Nix actually had his first draft already. By all accounts, it was an average one at best. We got a RB - perhaps the strongest position on the team at the time - and a bunch of question marks that can't even get on the field. They failed miserably to address the Oline or the LBs in the last year. And they made token "improvements" in the Dline.

 

So mid first year (roughly), I'd say this new regime is off to a very shaky start. I just don't get all the optimism that Nix has a plan and he'll execute it. He's been with this team long enough to see some sort of a plan starting to take shape. Yet here we are at the bye week with the team getting off to the worst start in 25 years, with the defense looking as bad as they ever have in franchise history, and the offense completely lacking any identity or cohesion. Of Nix's primary hires; Gailey is looking very much over matched and the OC and DC are looking completely clueless.

 

Yes, it's too early to completely judge Nix/Gailey. But, at some point they're responsible for the mess of this team. And certainly a portion of the current mess is very much on their shoulders. There was absolutely no reason to start this season with essentially the same Oline, QB rotation as last year; and to switch to a 3-4 defense without adding any real help to the LBs. But, that's what they did.
