We have a winner! The hands-on approach is vital in a football operation, and someone said Buddy Nix would "talk" with Jim Harbaugh, as an example. Well the best way to make friends and influence people is to press the flesh (ask a politician!) and personally anyone in "My" organization that is willing to put himself out there in that capacity is worth their weight in GOLD!! Notwithstanding the obvious, that Buddy Nix has scouting roots, but that he cares enough to launch himself into that mode is exemplary!!

Note: Essentially, Buddy will be putting his stamp on this team with such a far reaching decision. I think I'd opt to trust myself on that type of call, how about you??

Is he going to visit the college, watch the practices, and work out the QB's. I don't think so.

He will only be able to see 2 games in person - one each week?

Not quite sure why this is better than just watching the game on TV?

You cant see squat on TV other than the line play to some degree. the TV view doesnt allow you to see the coverages downfield or the WRs.

Buddy better be watching all that tape once they get it from the NFL dub center or whatever.

The game isn't as important as the other things.....at least, sometimes. I'll try to explain. I'm sure the Bills have any number of countless hours of film to study a guy. They can see that stuff on tape all they want. However, that's only a part of what GM's are looking for.

I played D-1 baseball. When I was being recruited, the school that ended up with me came to two of my games. I also visited their campus. The last game they came to, I was friggin terrible. A couple of errors, one of which ended the game. Ironically, we were playing Terrell Pryor's school, which is a ghetto school, and they beat us in baseball for the first time in school history. I was ashamed, and obviously thought I blew the scholarship.

When I got home, the coach was there having dinner with my family, and he told me that they would be offering me a scholarship, and I kind of chuckled and told him I thought I blew it today. He said that he saw enough of me on film to warrant the visit. When he arrived, he actually watched me take ground balls and hit in pregame and saw everything he needed to see. He wasn't all that interested in the game itself. He saw enough things in my pregame stuff that he thought I could learn when he started teaching me in college. He talked to my coach, and visited two teachers. So, he knew that I was going to be offered a scholarship before I even played the game. Which was awful. He then proceeded to rip on me for losing to the school we lost the game to (Jeannette).

I'm sure Nix is doing the same things. Let's just say he's interested in Luck. I'm sure he's going to watch his practice habits. How he works in pregame. Try to have a conversation with Harbaugh, etc. There are so many things you can pick up outside of a game that I'm sure he's looking for. Then, watch for how all of that culminates in the game itself.

I know a lot of what I said is common sense, but a visit to see someone is so much more than just watching the game that's being played. In all due respects, it may be the least important part.

Since He'll be talking with Harbaugh anyway... (Nothing against Chan but Harbaugh... he has got to be just as good as his Bro in B'more )

Would you rather it was Russ Brandon? <_<

Russ did go to the Combine to scout. And was promptly laughed at for masquerading as a GM.

I saw Mr. Smithers walking on the field Sunday. Didn't look enthused, but hey, they've got Toronto for a few more mil. ;)

His "roots" are in scouting? Interesting way to put it. He has never been anything other than a scout until being given this job for which he's not qualified. He's a washed up scout who couldn't get a job with any other team as anything but a part time adviser.

How many 70 year olds you work with?

It's truly amazing - given the amount of knowledge available within a few keystrokes - how retarded some posters can still be...

Buddy Nix had a successful college football coaching career with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, which included the recruitment of Terrell Owens. From 1984 – 1992, Nix was the head coach at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Prior to his nine seasons at UTC, Nix’s collegiate career included assistant positions at Louisiana State University (1981 – 1983), Auburn (1976 – 1980), Southern Mississippi (1972 – 1975), Livingston University (1970 – 1971) and Carson Newman (1969). In 1971, Livingston won the Division II National Championship while Nix was the Defensive Coordinator. Nix’s coaching career began in 1961 as a graduate assistant at the University of Alabama, the same year the Crimson Tide finished 11-0 and defeated Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl en route to a National Championship.

Nix’s first tenure with the Bills was as a Southeast region college scout from 1993 – 2000, where he first worked with former Bills GM John Butler before joining San Diego. Nix left Buffalo with John Butler and A. J. Smith after the 2000 season. He was initially the Director of Pro Player Personnel (2000–2001), but after Butler died, Smith was promoted to General Manager, and Nix to Assistant General Manager. The Chargers won four out of the last five AFC West titles with Nix as Assistant GM and Director of Player Personnel.

Can't you troll someplace else?
