At what point do you cut your losses with Maybin?

Maybin will get more chances to produce than any other Jauron holdover because he was drafted so high. It doesnt look good for the whole organization when theres a bust. Look how many chances McCargo got, Ryan Leaf, players like that. If your a high draft pick you have what seems like forever, Vernon Gohlston is on his 3rd position with the Jets and is finally turning some heads. So Maybin may actually get a shot at a 3rd position next year if he can't make it as an OLB. Look for Maybe to play fullback next season!

Maybin has no ties to this Administration. I say if he can't cut it and get into the starting rotation, you gotta cut him. He's a first rounder costing us a-lot of money. I can't see paying the guy what he's getting paid to be a backup for the back ups. Right now he's part of the third string defense.

Without knowing the details of his contract, costing a lot of money can mean different things. It looks like he signed a 5 year, $17.6m contract that could escalate into $25m based on playing time and sacks. His base salaries are well under a million dollars the next 2 years according to Rotoworld. Any signing bonus he was already paid is irrelevant. So you're willing to give up on him to save $500k this year that is really only $200k after you replace him with a guy like Coleman who would make $300k? As others said, he plays hard albeit not smart, is still very young and seems to have a positive attitude. Ellis showed nothing his first 2 years and now looks poised for a breakout year.

I think the reason high draft picks get more time, and many chances, is mostly due to the talent they showed that made them a high draft pick. Coaches see the talent and think they can find a way to harness that and make the player productive.

IMO, of course.

I have my own time frame with Maybin but yours may be different.

At some point YOU have to cut your losses and move on...........

Personally, I give him this season and perhaps one more preseason to drastically improve, after that, SEE YA!

I am all for patience, but we need more from a #1 draft pick. It's money vs production

There is no right or wrong answer with a time frame to cut ties, it depends on your patience level.

Your opinion is important to me and I respect your thoughts on the matter.

I think the obvious answer is at least after you've given him a chance to get on the field and do something.

I do think you have to give him at least this year and next year. If at that time there has been zero improvement (i.e. he's still playing primarily on ST and not getting into games on defense - even as a pass rush specialist), you'd have to look at cutting him. I think you have to give him as much time as you can because of his potential and also because we are going to need pass rushers. Personally, I'd keep him on the team as the 4th OLB until his contract comes up unless he is not playing at all on defense or we drafted someone markedly better. I do think an OLB will be drafted early next year in the draft (top 100 pick), but that still leaves us with 4 including Maybin (assuming Kelsey is not retained).

Potential? What "potential"? A Bills scout and Jauron saw potential but that's not enough for me. You say potential but I have not seen any in 2 years. Just because our pathetic scouting dept and tricky dick saw potential doesn't mean there is any. He's a back up OLB and special teamer at best. Get rid of him now and develop your own picks.

Good job BILLS and their scouts, another bust. I say cut him now and give his back up job to Coleman, who has man size and NFL strength to geter one. If I see maybe show boat, jump on piles, get knocked on his ass one more time I'll puke.

He was rated a mid first round pick by every scout on every NFL team coming out of Penn State. Jauron's a walking corpse, but blaming the scouts is just wrong.

If he was fully physically developed and say...26 years old it would be one thing, but he just turned 22.

Cut him after the pre-season. After all, he has a huge upside as the before picture for a protein body building milkshake ad.

I'm not sure he will live up to the initial hopes of whoever drafted him thought he would, but he does have 1 sack and 8 tackles in two games. I realize it is preseason and he isn't playing the cream of the crop. You would have to think he, as well as the entire defense, would both improve as the year goes on and they get used to the system and each other. Let's say he goes at this pace. That's 8 sacks and 64 tackles for the season. I'm not saying he will stay at that pace, but if he did I would be happy with his output.

He needs 3 full NFL seasons. If at the end of his 3rd NFL season he's not starting, then I'd make a decision. Pass rushers sometimes take more time than other positions. I would be concerned that he doesn't look much bigger than last season. To play OLB in a 3-4 he needs to be an actual 245-255. I don't think he's within 10 pounds of that.

I don't care for his look-at-me attitude, but he's 22 years old for goodness sakes.

well said...

Agreed it would be the height of panic and just bad football stupid to cut him without trying to play him as much as possible in what is likely a lost season this year. Further the uncertainties of the entire season caused by the CBA whoha and his youth and raw speed likely make him a keeper next pre-season. The talk of cutting our losses now seems little more than typical fan panic.

Not to be an ass, but I don't think the Bills care whether you see potential in any of their players or not (which is what I was talking about - not your opinion on him, or mine either for that matter). Also, Maybin is way bigger than Coleman, which was the biggest knock on him and probably the reason he wasn't drafted at all.

I'm all for cutting him if there is someone else that he would be taking a roster spot from, but that isn't the case this year, especially after Batten going on IR. They are going to keep 5 OLBs - Kelsey, Ellis, Torbor, Maybin, and Coleman and none of those guys have any serious competition. Next year when they lose Kelsey and possibly Torbor, they'll draft one or two OLBs and still keep Maybin as at least the fifth because there 'll be a clear 5 players better than everyone else, which will include Maybin. I think you do mor eharm than good if you cut him too quickly - he should get some opportunity to show what he can do over a few seasons.

Right - he would have to be truly expendable, which he isn't yet. Worst case, he's a clear-passing-down pass rusher, and pray they don't run a draw play his way.

I posted this in another thread awhile back...

1 1 DET Matthew Stafford QB 2009 0 0 1 3 10 201 377 2267 13 20 20 108 2 1 Georgia

1 2 STL Jason Smith T 2009 0 0 0 1 8 1 Baylor

1 3 KAN Tyson Jackson DE 2009 0 0 1 6 16 26 LSU

1 4 SEA Aaron Curry LB 2009 0 0 1 5 14 53 2.0 Wake Forest

1 5 NYJ Mark Sanchez QB 2009 0 0 1 6 15 196 364 2444 12 20 36 106 3 USC

1 6 CIN Andre Smith T 0 0 0 Alabama

1 7 OAK Darrius Heyward-Bey WR 2009 0 0 1 1 11 2 19 0 9 124 1 Maryland

1 8 JAX Eugene Monroe T 2009 0 0 1 7 15 Virginia

1 9 GNB B.J. Raji DT 2009 0 0 0 2 14 19 1.0 Boston College

1 10 SFO Michael Crabtree WR 2009 0 0 1 6 11 48 625 2 3 Texas Tech

1 11 BUF Aaron Maybin DE 2009 0 0 0 2 16 9 Penn State

There isn't a whole lot here BUT potential. When 7-8 of these guys become established superstars and we end up thinking *which one of these things is not like the other?* with Maybin, then we can start talking bust. Until then, I just see a list of guys who are well paid, but haven't done much of anything yet.

He was drafted as a project and was only 21 years old...It is said that it takes 3 years to judge a draft...so you have

1) a young very raw talent coming out of college

2) is now learning a new position in his second year

3) is now under his second coaching staff in his second year

I have never agreed with the pick of Maybin but hes here for a while so we may as well support him.. there are other players on the roster that we could be complaining about... McCargo, Kirk Chambers, Fitzpatrick, etc..

I was going to post something similar. He was drafted as a project, because the Bills had such a great pass rush at hte time, they could afford such a luxury{/sarcasm]. Plus he was drafted by the old regime. which is even more puzzling that they drafted a guy more suited for the 3-4 when the old regime ran a 4-3? That being said, I don't see this new staff being as patient. I think he has this year and next training camp to show significant improvement. I like the kids energy and enthusiasm, but he needs to produce soon...

I think the purpose of this thread flew right over the heads of some. We are looking for a time frame, most of you provided that, congrats!

He deserves another full season, if he doesn't improve by then you bring him back next year in training camp.

At the final 53 2011, if he has not dramatically improve by then, he is not worth keeping.

This guys is not an undrafted rookie... he was taken in the top half of the first round.

Why defend this guy after 2 FULL seasons???

He did after all HOLD OUT before he signed that new deal!

This guy is a LINEBACKER, (you make tackles and rush the passer) you don't need 3 FULL seasons to perfect your skills!

When you start out a reply with "not to be an ass" it's probably too late. There will always be Maybe supporters and detractors. We sit on opposite sides of the fence on this. I hope by the end of the year I'm proved wrong. But I have this one tucked away to regurgitate in a year when he's gone, "not to be an ass" but time will tell who's right. I can see we are stuck with him for now so I hope he does something to earn is money.

Personally, I think Ellis was showing some promise last year (consistent separation and control on the LOS). He seemed fairly solid in preseason but coaches decided not to use him much. Probably didn't want to break him in given their defensive/team woes. But I think he really needs to get some real games under his belt and will show some good upside.

To me, Maybin gets this year and next preseason. If he's at least a solid #2 backup by the end of next preseason give him another year (because he's so young) just in case. As pointed out, we're not spending to the cap so it's not like he's tying up someone else's $$.
