Jason Peters...a little salt

Recommended Posts

Walker never played LT during a real game for the Bills, John. Again the real mistake was cutting him just days before the season started.

Some goofball in the organization believed that he could take Peters's spot at the LT position. It became so outlandishly obvious that he wasn't suited for that postion that he was cut.

You are absolutely right that he still should have been retained as a utility lineman to play RT or fill in for any other spot on the line (except center) if there was an injury. He was cut simply for financial reasons, leaving the team with little depth on the line.

I'm still salty...so a year after...I have to say it.

THIS year's draft was why you didn't release Jason Peters.

We have too many holes to fill, not the least of which is Left Tackle, and we only have one first round pick.

A lot of people hated him, including me. He was fat and lazy, and took plays off. He wanted to be paid more than he was worth. He was a late round turd we polished into something competent whose head got too big for his own good.

But was he better than the alternative?

Any monkey with two neurons to rub together would have to say yes.

DUDE GET A CLUE, we did not release jason peters. Do some research or something, And yes we are better without a player like that

Two mistakes in my original post (neither of which are really substantive)

1. Peters was traded, not released

2. Peters was not a late round pick, he was undrafted.

As for getting a clue...well...if you have the ability to seperate yourself emotionally from the issue there is no single GM in this league who thinks we are better off with who we started last year, or who we will start this year. But hey, maybe you know something they don't.

Why does everyone care what he was paid? We were well under the cap and the $$ isn't coming out of your account...so who cares?

Would you rather overpay a decent LT or have noone at a bargain?

I agree.

Apparently the Bills would rather have no one at a bargain despite the fact that the QB's got killed.

Did anyone notice how another former Bills head coach (Jauron) has landed back where they belong as an assistant.

Remember the Peter Principle?

People will rise to their level of incompetence.

Yes, yes. Some people here get it. So happy, I am not alone.

I will call it the "what's your next best alternative" principle.

When your next best alternative is Langston Walker...(who you will release because you think he is incompetent)...you don't make the trade...because the alternative sucks... as you yourself adjudged in releasing said alternative.

Actually, after Peters was traded, there were several mistakes made. The first was installing the no-huddle and having Walker play LT. A better option might have been to put Bell at LT and let him learn the position with the starters from the beginning. Without the no-huddle, Walker would have been a decent, though not great, LT, and certainly better than what the Bills had there. Drafting Oher wasn't really a consideration, since they had Walker, Butler, and Bell at OT. And again, cutting Walker right before the season was a mistake, as was cutting Schonert.

What gets me about the last incompetent coaching staff is that for the last 4 years they went into each season thinking the O line would play well.

Every year they made player changes to the line and every year the O line under achieved. This last season was a failure on a monumental level, easily the worst line I've ever seen in Buffalo.

Not the players fault either, they did their best. It was just an accumulation of lack of experience by the players, lack of experience of the line coach and injuries.

Jauron had the frame of mind to throw a player into the fire as it is the only way he gets experience, total bullcrap.

Chuck Knox was an ex O linemen himself and he knew that you need to develop players before you simply plug them in as starters and "think" they will play well.

An example was Jim Richter who was drafted in the first round in 1980 pick #16 and Knox had the guy sit on the bench his first year while he learned and developed and played special teams. Richter went on to play guard for the Bills for 13 years and 2 more with the Falcons.

Dunno why it took 4 years to fire the moron and his staff of buffoons...

With or without the no huddle (how moronic was that coaching decision) Bell was overmatched right from the start. He wasn't ready to handle the LT position at that early point in his career. I don't fault him for being place in a situation that he was unprepared for. The right way to have handled him was to periodically play him so that he could gain some experience.

No matter who was played and what strategy was employed the line was incapable of playing at a reasonable NFL level. No qb had a chance to succeed under such circumstances. Were there options? Maybe the Bills could have been more agrressive in getting a pedestrian vet such as Levi Jones to stem the tide for the short term. But the Bills went cheap with the cutting of Walker and raiding the practice squads of some other bottom feeding teams.

The people behind the decision making regarding the OL should be fired for malfeasance. The fans got cheated and the owner made more money off the decisions which rendered our OL weaker and cheaper. The owner and the front office should be ashamed of themselves. Pitiful, just pitiiful.

Assuming the no huddle had never been suggested, having Bell start at LT from the first OTA would have led to a much better situation than the way it played out. Same for keeping Walker at LT the entire season and especially for insurance.

Levi Jones would have been no better. Just ask Washington fans.

What does Ralph have to do with it? It wasn't his call to fire Walker just before the season started. And most of the FO has been fired.

Not so much... at least not last year. We draft Oher at number 11 last year instead of maybin and we have our LT. Walker plays RT and Butler stays at G. Levitre in the second to ply LG and Hangrtner at C from FA...thats a pretty good oline.

But John Guy decided that Walker was our LT...and thats why he is unemployed

I agree

Most of the posters here were calling for a replacement for Peters in the draft...somewhere,anywhere in 1-7, for a replacement in free agency. Then they cut Walker just before the season starts and still don't bring in any replacement.

Most of us here knew the line would be bad, the media knew the line would be bad, why didn't the coaches?

Although its somewhat bittersweet with Michael Oher the Bills might have made the playoffs... but then Jauron would have been retained

We are not better without him! Get a clue. Stop whining about his contract issues. Pro Bowl LTs demand Pro Bowl salaries. Typical cheap move by our front office. We tried to catch lightning in a bottle for a second time with a career RT and practice squad fodder and failed miserably. That move ended in a cascading debacle of failure causing a shuffling of the OL that screwed up our RG, RT and LT positions. What did we get in return for our Pro Bowl LT? A rookie guard with a severly broken leg who may never be the same and a TE that couldn't win a starting position!!!!! I wish those guys well and think they have potential but talk about "bird in hand vs 2 in the bush"?

If we hadn't screwed the pooch on that one we would still have a pro bowl LT and this year we would be able to draft best player available like Jimmy Clausen, CJ Spiller or Dez Bryant at #9 instead of likely drafting for need! What is even more sick is if we didn't care that much which of those 3 we got we could have potentially found a partner, traded down and gotten EVEN MORE PICKS!!!!

I don't know about you but that seems like a much better scenario than what we have now!

Spoken like a man who didn't see Pace and Jones play. They had their struggles and were roundly criticized for not being in shape. Especially Pace who had a tendency to get injured after his summer vacations. But don't let the truth get in the way of your argument.

How about Chad Muchostinko? He had a horrible year two years ago while he pouted. Yeah, he missed Palmer, but 540 yards receiving from the guy who consistently lead the AFC in receiving yardage? Pouting is bad for performance, Ramass. It hurts your performance here, I've seen it. You do better on subjects where you are right.

But I digress...Chad pouted. Peters pouted. Once 85 realized that the Bengals weren't going to let him talk his way out of town and he came back and had another big yardage, big ypc year and the Bengals made the playoffs. Could the Bills have made the playoffs with Peters/Dockery/Walker all still on the team along with the addition of TO? Maybe not, but I have a suspicion they would have had a winning record and the jury would at the very least still be out on Captain Checkdown because that group was actually pretty fair at protecting the QB in 2008. Winning records mean something when you only get 1 every ten years.

Ochocinco's down year in 2008 had everything to do with Fitzpatrick under center versus Palmer. The reason he bounced back again was because Palmer spent the entire season under center.

Well...with Jason Peters and no T.O. we won seven games. Without Jason Peters but having one of the most prolific receivers in NFL history we won 6 games, and that only because the Colts did their typical "pound on our 2nd teamers while we rest our starters and !@#$ other teams out of their legitimate playoff chances" routine. So it would appear we are in fact not better without Jason Peters.

100% agreed. But it did free up plenty of money to sign um...uh....exactly. It was a cheap !@#$ing move and a spit in the face of Bills fans, and what is sad is that so many of them open up their mouths and drink it up.

Ok, so Houshmandzadeh had 90+ catches but Ochocinco's production dropped from well over 1000 yards to 540 just because of Fitzpatrick? You are in full back pedal. Listen, if you have no idea about NFL history, then don't go there.

You guys with your irrational Peters hate would have been the same people who hated Bruce Smith because he said a few dumb things and averaged less than a sack per game or didn't lead the league in sacks every year. Or hate Schobel and think he is overpaid despite his high production and the fact that he makes about half of what Julius Peppers now makes in a season. For some the grass is automatically greener on the other side despite obviously overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Peters is a physically dominant football player and two time Pro Bowler. He could be better, but so could have Orlando Pace. But since you aren't a Rams fan, you just take all of Pace's Pro Bowl appearances at face value.

Try reading sometime. I'm one of the biggest Schobel supporters on the board. Peters simply wasn't worth the money. You dont want a lard ass, overweight, mentally deficient loser who only tries when he feels like it manning the LT spot for the next 6 years. The biggest mistake wasn't letting him go, it was not having an appropriate replacement. Its funny how you mention Peppers in the vein you do. Peters is basically the LT equivalent of Peppers. A hell of a player when they feel like, but neither one are worth the money being paid to them, because they only show up some of the time.

As for Ochocinco, the biggest dropoff was in his catches and YPC. Housh kept the same role he had been doing, being the primary short route possession WR. Why did that happen? Because they had a pathetic excuse for a QB who simply couldn't get the ball to 85. Ochocinco could have caught 90+ passes too had he been targeted with every single short pass like Housh was. But go ahead and pretend that Palmer being hurt had nothing to do with the Bengals downfall in '08 and the drop in offensive #'s were all due to Ochocinco missing camp.
