E-mail gaffe

Whaley gained unwanted notoriety in 2007 when an inappropriate e-mail that he had sent to Steelers assistant coach Larry Zierlein was inadvertently forwarded by Zierlein to a large number of high-level NFL employees, including commissioner Roger Goodell. The e-mail reportedly contained a pornographic video. Zierlein apologized for the gaffe, and it is believed that neither he nor Whaley were disciplined by the team or the league.[1]

All it says on Wiki....ha.

Hmmm...maybe our proximity to the Sundowner cinched the deal for Whaley? :wallbash:

Interesting. Bringing in a thirtysomething to work with Nix helps curb the "Sunshine Boys" jokes. Thumbs up for the WPIAL link, as well: http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburgh...s/s_479973.html

And one more very important (to me) note: longtime Pittsburgh PP-G Steelers guy Ed Bouchette has good things to say about him. Bouchette's been covering that team since the Steel Curtain days. Man knows his stuff.

Whaley first worked for the Steelers while Gailey was still there.

His media guide bio:

Doug Whaley is in his 10th season as the Steelers’ pro personnel coordinator

after spending the three previous years as an area scout with the Seattle

Seahawks. In his current position, Whaley is responsible for scouting Steelers’

opponents and evaluating pro players.

Whaley joined Seattle in July, 1996, and was in charge of scouting college

players throughout the east coast. Prior to joining Seattle, Whaley spent the

1995 season as an assistant in the Steelers’ pro personnel department.

A native of nearby Upper St. Clair, Whaley lettered four seasons at the University

of Pittsburgh as a safety and linebacker. After earning a degree in

business finance, Whaley worked for one year as a retail stockbroker on Wall

Street before joining the Steelers in 1995.

Whaley attended Upper St. Clair High School in Pittsburgh, lettering in football,

wrestling and track.

Whaley is single and lives in Pittsburgh.

Simon, you've got more of an "in" with the Stillers than I do. What else can you tell us about him?

The mere fact that Nix would be looking at a front office prospect such as Whaley is terrific news. It demonstrates that under Nix the organization is looking for young talent to infuse this stolid front office with energy and competency. Coming from Pittsburg, if he is selected, he will bring with him a know how to draft soundly and have a prudent approach to free agency and salary cap management. :wallbash:
