  1. 16. MNF vs Dallas & Nick F**k 17. "Just give it to 'em" 18. Lay down and die against Steelers 2nd string with a playoff berth on the line 19. Blow 21-3 lead on Miami in the 4th quarter. 20. Denver "Chinese fire drill" on opening day 2007 21. Ernest Wilford "no really Nate, just go ahead and watch"
  2. I think we need to add Cleveland and the Jets from last season, and then the NE debacle? 10/08/07 - COWBOYS 25 BILLS 24 - Bills turn over Tony Romo 6 times, return 2 INTs and a kickoff for touchdowns, stop a last-ditch two point conversion, and then lose when Dallas recovers an onsides kick with 20 seconds left and kicks a 50+ yard field goal with two seconds left 09/09/07 - BRONCOS 15 BILLS 14 - In a game in which the Bills never trailed, they lose on a "fire drill" field goal with one second left. 2006 SEASON 12/24/06 - TITANS 30 BILLS 20 - In Orchard Park, Vince Young runs wild, the Titans kick a field goal with 2:10 left to take a one point lead. The game ends when JP Losman throwing an INT on 4th and 5 from the Tennessee 28 yard line with one minute left, after the Bills forego the 43 yard field goal attempt due to wind. 12/12/06 - COLTS 17 BILLS 16 - Down one to the Colts in Indy, Rian Lindell misses a 41 yard field with 6:30 left. Peyton Manning never gives the Bills the ball back and runs out the clock. 09/10/06 - PATRIOTS 19 BILLS 17 - On the road to open the season, the Bills return a Brady INT for a TD on first play of game, and lead for most of the game. Then the Patriots take the lead on a *safety* by sacking Losman with six minutes left. After the free kick, Donte Whinter records an INT on the first play. The Bills proceed to go three-and-out from their own 44, punt with 6:20 to go and never see the ball again. 2005 SEASON 01/01/06 - JETS 30 BILLS 26 - In a meaningless game at home, the Jets score on a Kelly Holcomb INT for a TD and then take the lead with a Justin Miller KR for a TD with 6 minutes left. Holcomb takes Bills to the Jets 34 with with 3 minutes left before being sacked on 4th and 10. Holcomb then throws an INT on the desperation drive with 50 seconds left. 12/04/05 - DOLPHINS 24 BILLS 23 - In Miami, Lee Evans scores 3 TD's in the first quarter. Losman only completes one more pass to Lee Evans for the rest of the game. Chris Chambers catches 15 passes for 238 yards, including the game-winning TD as Sage Rosenfels in relief for Gus Frerotte takes the Fish 73 yards with 1:51 left. 11/27/05 - PANTHERS 13 BILLS 9 - Bills take a 9-6 lead at home with 5 minutes left. Future Buffalo Bill Michael Gaines scores the GW TD with 2:21 left. With 47 seconds left, on 3rd and 10 from the Carolina 43, JP Losman throws a game-ending INT. 10/30/05 - PATRIOTS 21 BILLS 16 - On the road in Foxboro, the Bills take a 16-7 lead with ten minutes left. The Patriots take just two minutes and 11 seconds to score a TD to pull within two points. On the next drive, Holcomb fumbles, and the Patriots need just one play to take the lead. With two minutes left, on 4th and 8 from the from the New England 40, a pass to Moulds gets no gain. 2004 SEASON 01/02/05 - STEELERS 29 BILLS 24 - In a home game to secure a playoff birth, the Steelers played their backups, and some guy named Willie Parker ran 19 times for 102 yards. The Bills never even come close to winning. 10/10/04 - JETS 16 BILLS 14 - On the road in New York, the Bills score 14 4th Quarter points to take the lead with 6 minutes left. The Jets' Doug Brien kicks a 38 yard field goal with 1 minute left. The game ends with Drew Bledsoe's Hail Mary being intercepted in a game that ultimately cost the Bills a playoff spot. 10/03/04 - PATRIOTS 31 BILLS 17 - At home and down 7 with three minutes left, the Bills are driving at the New England 17, when Drew Bledsoe is sacked and the Patriots return the fumble for a TD in a game that ultimately costs the Bills a playoff spot. 09/12/04 - JAGUARS 13 BILLS 10 - At home and down 4 points with two minutes left, the Jaguars get the ball at their own 20 with one time out. On 4th and Goal from the 7 with four seconds left, Byron Leftwich hits Ernest Wilford in the back of the end zone - who somehow hangs on to the GW TD in a game that ultimately cost the Bills a playoff spot. 2003 SEASON 12/14/03 - TITANS 28 BILLS 26 - Billy Volek has a big game in Nashville. Drew Bledsoe hits Mark Campbell for a TD with 26 seconds left, but the two-point conversion fails and the Titans recover the onsides kick. This ends the playoff hopes in a season that began with the 31-0 thumping of the Patriots in the Lawyer Milloy Bowl. 11/23/03 - COLTS 17 BILLS 14 - Bills take a 14-3 lead into the 4th quarter in Orchard Park. The Bills stuff the Colts on three plays after first-and-goal from the 3. Colts punch it in on 4th and Goal from the 1 with 1:42 left and convert the two-point conversion for a three point lead. From the Buffalo 46, Drew Bledsoe throws an INT with 42 seconds left. Their third crushing loss in three weeks, their second at home. 11/16/03 - TEXANS 12 BILLS 10 - In Orchard Park, the Texans take a 12-8 lead with 3:28 left. On the first play after the two minute warning, the Bills have 1st and 10 from the Houston 31. Drew Bledsoe is sacked and fumbles. The Texans take an intentional safety to end the game, giving the Bills two safeties in the game. 11/09/03 - COWBOYS 10 BILLS 3 - In Dallas, Quincy Carter takes a four point lead into the 4th quarter. With four minutes left, the Cowboys' kicker pooch punts the ball into the end zone from the Buffalo 32 for a 12 yard net punt. The Bills proceed to go three-and-out, including an own-recovered Travis Henry fumble. Getting the ball with 2:50 to play, Adrian Murrell runs the ball down our throats to end the game. 09/21/03 - DOLPHINS 17 BILLS 7 - In Miami, the Bills are down 10 to 3 with 6:43 to play. Getting the ball at their own 34, they run for two yards, have a false start, and a Drew Bledsoe sack. On 3rd and 19, the pass is incomplete. Miami then rips off a three minute drive, when the Bills appear to stuff Ricky Williams on 3rd and Goal from the 1 on the first play after the two minute warning. A booth review is called, and Miami is given the TD and a 10 point lead. Down 10 with 1:48 to play from their own 20 with one timeout, Drew Bledsoe manages to drive to the Miami 24. 2002 SEASON 11/17/02 - CHIEFS 17 BILLS 16 - In Kansas City, the Chiefs take a one point lead with five minutes to go. Five plays later, the Bills have 2nd and 10 at the KC 40 when Drew Bledsoe throws an INT on a deep pass towards the end zone. The Chiefs take the ball with 4:15 to play and proceed to run out the clock. 09/08/02 - JETS 37 BILLS 31 - The Bills tie the season-opener at home with a Bledsoe-to-Moulds TD pass with 26 seconds left. They lose in OT as Justin Miller takes the opening kickoff of overtime for a touchdown. 2001 SEASON 12/16/01 - PATRIOTS 12 BILL 9 - In one of the great ironies of football history, a Bills team that will finish 3-13 takes a Patriots team that will win the Super Bowl to the wire at home, ending up holding Tom Brady to 19 of 35 passing. The Patriots tie the game with 2:50 left. Alex Van Pelt proceeds to lead the Bills on a three-and-out. With 1:50 left, the Patriots get the ball at their own 13. They get to their own 45 with one minute left. The Bills sniff out a screen for -2, nearly get an interception, and finally Schobel sacks Brady to end the threat. With 22 seconds left at their own 16, the Bills unwisely try to make something happen. Alex Van Pelt fumbles, and the Bills recover to thankfully get to OT. In OT, the Bills advance to their own 48, and throw an incomplete pass on 3rd and 2, and punt. With 10 minutes left in OT, the Patriots are at their own 46 when David Patten catches a pass, is knocked silly by Keion Carpenter, and fumbles. Nate Clements recovers, and advances the ball into Patriots territory. On replay review, David Pattens head rolls out of bounds while his body is touching the football. By rule, the ball is out-of-bounds and New England retains possession. Two plays later, NE kicks the winning FG. Had the Bills won, New England would not have made the playoffs, Bill Belichick would have been a lifetime .500 football Head Coach, and the world would have been a very different place. 11/25/01 - DOLPHINS 34 BILLS 27 - In Buffalo, the Fish score 24 points in the 4th Quarter. The Fish score a TD with 4:15 left, and the Bills proceed to go three-and-out, with an incomplete pass on 2nd down, and a completed pass short to Larry Centers on third down. Olindo Mare kicks a 39 yarder with 1:17 left, and Nate Clements fumbles the ensuing kickoff. Three plays later, the Fish have a seven point lead. Alex Van Pelt gets the ball with 43 seconds and two timeouts, but is unable to seriously threaten. 11/11/01 - PATRIOTS 21 BILLS 11 - Antowain Smith ices the game with a 42-yard TD run with three minutes left. 10/28/01 - CHARGERS 27 BILLS 24 - Doug Flutie scores on a GW 13 yard TD run with one minute left. 2000 SEASON 12/17/00 - PATRIOTS 13 BILLS 10 (OT) - In Foxboro, the Patriots kick the game-winner with 19 seconds left in OT. The Patriots finish 5-11, the Bills finish 8-8. 12/11/00 - COLTS 44 BILLS 20 - In Indy, with both teams at 7-6 with three games left, Wade Phillips says that "both teams are basically out of it." The Colts win their last three and make the playoffs. 10/01/00 - COLTS 18 BILLS 16 - In Buffalo, Mike Vanderjagt hits a 45-yard gamewinner as time expires. 1999 SEASON 01/08/00 - TITANS 22 BILLS 16
  3. As soon as they drafted Leodis, the writing was on the wall that Jabari was gone this year. It's the way this organization has dealt with the CB position since the last years of the Super Bowl era. Draft a CB in the first round one year, play him at nickel that first year, then take over for the free agent departure the next year. Thomas Smith replaced Nate Odomes...Burris for Mickey Washington...Winfield for Smith...Clements for Irvin...McGee for Winfield...Youboty was expected to be the successor to Clements but it wound up being Webster, Youboty, and then Greer. The only time in that period that they did anything different was when Ken Irvin replaced the outgoing Jeff Burris. As some may recall, Irvin and Marlon Kerner were the pair of CBs drafted in the midrounds of 1995...both of them proved to be solid selections but if not for 2 ACL injuries, I think Kerner would've gotten that starting job that Irvin got. I remember telling McGee to expect 2006 to be Nate's last season with us after we drafted Youboty (McGee and Stamer were at the Jills Congrats Party the 1st night of the draft)
  4. well from what I understand...they dont have much cap room...so for them to get rid of 2 high priced rookies for just 1 might be a bargain...only problem is that there wont be a rookie QB worth moving up to our spot to get...both stafford and sanchez are mocked to go in top 3...however..the Jets may still try to do this trade with the Rams...but I highly doubt the Rams want to go from pick 2 to 17 and lose out on Crabtree...plus at 17 the Jets have a shot at taking Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State...they also have a shot in the 2nd round to grab Nate Davis, QB, Ball State...so most likely it wont happen.
  5. DL(2) B.J. Raji First Round Pick for the starting interior role. Raji will start and Kyle Williams will provide depth in the defensive line rotation for the replaced John Mccargo. Second Round Pick DE Robert Ayers for the outside pass rush help. He will slide right into the Rotation of DE's and possibly even start. He has solid size at 6-3 270 IBS. Sidenote- Bills also draft DE Phillip Hunt from Houston in the 5th round. OL(2) Bills sign C Jason Brown from Baltimore to come right in and start from the get-go. Bills also draft Kraig Urbik from Wisconsin in the 4th round to help out with the developmental player at OG. TE(1) Bills draft TE James Casey from Rice in the 3rd round. WR(1) Bills sign WR Nate Washington from Pittsburgh OL(2) Jason Brown starting center from Baltimore and Bills draft C A.Q. Schipley from Penn State in the 6th round for backup help OLB(1) Bills resign Angelo Crowell for the starting LB position SS(1) Donte Whitner starts at FS and Bryan Scott starts at SS QB(1) Bills sign QB Ryan Fitzpatrick for the backup QB position FB(1) Bills also sign FB Leonard Weaver from Seattle for the FB position Bills cut Robert Royal, and Chris Kelsay. Were now looking at a DT rotation of Stroud, Raji, Johnson and Kyle Williams. Also a DE rotation of Aaron Schobel, Robert Ayers, Phillip Hunt, Ryan Denney, and Chris Ellis. Bills also finally extend Peters, they give Fred Jackson his contract extension. Jabari Greer leaves the Bills for free agency and signs with the Houston Texans to become their number one cornerback.
  6. Nate Washington, Lance Moore, and Hank Baskett would be interesting WR options for the Bills to consider, all realistic options too.
  7. Who are the top 5 bills cornerbacks since 1999? 1) Antione Winfield 2) Thomas Smith 3) Nate Clements Honorable Mention Terrence Mcgee
  8. Just some member of footballsfuture.com's mock draft but still entertaining none the less. Seems to have about everybodies team needs pretty well researched. 10. Here's an interesting blurb from JAson Whotlock about Nate Davis. JW sounds prettty angry... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. I have the perfect solution for Carolina's Jake Delhomme problem: Nate Davis. Don't believe the hype. The fumbles and losses in Ball State's last two games did not reveal a quarterback unprepared for primetime. They revealed an offensive coordinator-turned-head coach who spent the postseason attacking Davis' confidence in a desperate attempt to keep the star QB in school for one more season. I've witnessed some bush moves in my time covering college athletics, but I'm not sure anything matches the amateur hour orchestrated by the university-employed adults allegedly looking out for Davis' best interest. For now, I won't share the gory details. But I can assure you, when Davis is surrounded by a coaching staff feeding him positive energy and a single-minded message about the next opponent, the kid is special and plays with a natural charisma. Put him in the right situation, and he'll prove to be the best QB in this draft (or next year's if he comes back for his senior season). He'd be a perfect fit in Carolina. http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/9067480...b's-a-loser?
  11. Before I put a reply. Nice post, you pointed some things out to me I didnt see before. The Nate Clemets thing, you are correct....I totally looked over the fact that he was offered that much from San Fran, went right over my head. And I do agree with that. Im on the same boat as you with the Winfield thing, I would have loved to keep that guy. As for Fletcher and the speed and explosiveness, I look at our LB's and they didnt show any of that speed or explosiveness. I think Fletcher would have played well with the team. As for Spikes, I only brought him up cause of the leadership skills he had, the motivational stuff he brings with his name. Id have no issues having Spikes behind Poz, Mitchell & Fletcher.....Spikes for depth is better then Ellison & Digorgio. I think we both can see some major issues with this team. I think we both can agree that keeping some key players that are with the team is a must! And one thing is for sure, neither one of us can change what happens with this team......
  12. Actually, him getting top 10 money isnt all that absurd. Doesnt mean he is top 10 corner, but corners get big bucks in FA and that number goes up every year. Nate Clements wasnt even CLOSE to worth what he got from San Francisco when they made him the highest paid defensive player of ALL time.
  13. The problem sits with the owner of the Buffalo Bills, Ralph Wilson. This game of let him walk cause we dont want to pay for the players services is getting old like our owner. This is not directed at you in general, but the attitude of let him walk cause in another year he will cost too much is killing the Buffalo Bills. Imagine where the defense would be if we kept Pat Williams, Antoine Winfield, London Fletcher, & even Nate Clements for that matter or even Spikes. The Buffalo Bills have had the finances to keep these guys, but no the players knew the organization wouldnt pay them so they left for better opportunities elsewhere. All Ralph Wilson had to do is give them respectable contracts and they would have stayed. But no, the front office instead chooses the "let them go routine cause we cant afford them when we have 27 plus million in FREE cap space". And you say we have decent depth behind McGee, well I agree with that, however, letting McGee go creates less Depth then we have now. Yeah McKelvin & Corner & even Youboty showed some skills, but when it comes down to it, the logical and smart thing to do is keep your best talent, not let them walk cause they will cost money. I mean HELLO....talent costs money, you only win games when you have the talent to do so. Im not trying to be a negative nancy here and nor do I know the in's and out's of football. But I do know, that when you have talent on the team, you dont find ways to get rid of them cause they will cost money, you find ways to keep the talent despite them costing money. This has been the loser mentality of this franchise the past decade and you seen first hand what it got us....10 years of NOT making the playoffs. I get so sick of people thinking of ways to trade our best impact players cause they will cost money. This attitude has to go, but with the current owner of the Bills, Ralph Wilson this is the attitude the fans and the organization will have. But when it boils down to it, you dont find ways to trade away talent cause you are affraid to lose them, you need to find ways to keep that talent that makes your team good. And with the cap space we have, these players can be kept, and we also have the ability to add some players to make the team good.
  14. They've had some amazing drafts and others that were alright. But even with some so so years in the draft, we all know their team is downright stocked with talent. Look at the drafts since he was there (* means Pro Bowl player): 2001: LT*, Brees* 2002: Jammer (eh, serviceable but not worth top 5 pick), 2003:So so draft, but picked up Antonio Gates* undrafted and Kris Dielman (starting LG) undrafted and Stephen Cooper (starting LB) undrafted...rediculous! 2004: Phillip Rivers*, Igor Olshansky, Nick Hardwick*, Shaun Phillips, Michael Turner, and Nate Kaeding* (used from Manning trade). Remember they also got Wes Welker as undrafted (and subsequently released). 2005: Shawne Merriman*, Luis Castillo*, Vincent Jackson, Darren Sproles, Scott Mruczkowski (good versatile C and G) 2006: Antonio Cromartie*, Marcus McNeill*, Jeromey Clary (starting RT), Tim Dobbins (starting LB) 2007: Craig Davis (injured, on his way to being a bust), Eric Weddle, Jyles Tucker (starting LB) undrafted 2008 (I believe his last draft and then he stepped down): Antoine Cason (hasn't shown anything yet), Hester (good pick, probably too high for a FB but he can play RB too), nothing else of note here so far. I'm sure there are some players I've missed here. But another thing: take a look at their depth charts...almost every starter has been drafted by the Chargers...absolutely amazing. Off hand, the only guy that it looks like they brought in is Chris Chambers. Amazing. All homegrown talent. Now the fact that half their players are on roids or dropped in value during the draft because of steriods issues is besides the point... It will be interesting to see how involved he is in the drafts as a bills "national scout." From my understanding, that means scouting the league rather than college players? I'm sure they'll bring his input. But bringing ANYONE in is a step, and to bring a guy from the Chargers, who draft better than almost anyone in his tenure, is awesome.
  15. Draft Sharks Team-by-Team Salary Cap Report January 23, 2009 -------------- ** All 32 teams ranked by current salary cap space against the 2009 limit of $123 million per club. They are ranked from most cap room (Tampa) to least (NY Jets). These figures are not exact, but after weeks of exhaustive research at the NFLPA website, NFLMedia, ESPN, FOX, & local newspaper sites, they are pretty close. Detailed free agency & contract info included. by John Miller, Draftsharks.com 1. Tampa Bay -- $42m under – New GM Mark Dominik steps into the fallout from one of the worst collapses in history. The Bucs were 9-3 and cruising. They finished 9-7 and out of the playoffs, losing in Week 17 to ex-coach Jon Gruden's ex-team, the Oakland Raiders. Every team since 1993 that started 9-3 had made the playoffs until now. Time to get younger. DE Kevin Carter, LB Derrick Brooks, and CB Ronde Barber are turning 36, 36, and 34. Can they lock up free-agent WR Antonio Bryant now that his mentor Gruden was canned? He'll test the market. QBs Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese, and Luke McCown will all be gone. Classic rebuilding mode here. 2. Arizona -- $41m under – Charley Casserly quoted this astounding figure on CBS last week. It's kind of deceiving because few teams have as many big names to re-sign. They only have 37 players under contract this year. QB Kurt Warner, DE Bert Berry, DE Antonio Smith and LB Karlos Dansby are free agents. Would Warner stay on a discount so he can stay with Larry Fitzgerald? Obviously WR Anquan Boldin wants more money. WR Steve Breaston warrants an extension. They can cut RB Edgerrin James and DE Chike Okeafor and free up $7m. Overall there's no reason why Arizona can't sign studs like DE Terrell Suggs (who went to ASU), C/G Jason Brown (another stud Raven), and maybe RB Darren Sproles (change-up for Hightower?). 3. Denver -- $34m under – New coach Josh McDaniels has needs everywhere, primarily on defense. This unit could see a massive slash-fest that frees up another $15m or so, giving them near $50m to spend! S Marlon McCree, S Marquand Manuel, LB Nate Webster, LB Boss Bailey, DE Ebenezer Ekuban, & DT Dewayne Robertson are just 6 of maybe 10-12 defense cap-cuts. McDaniels won't leave offense off his wish list since he's holding a platinum credit card. Free-agent RB Derrick Ward is a perfect fit. They have 2 great WRs in Brandon Marshall & Eddie Royal, but what about adding WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh? McDaniels witnessed T.J. burning New England for 26 catches, 340 yards and 1 TD in the last 3 meetings. 4. Kansas City -- $33m under – The youngest club in the league last year, and the stingiest too. "Astonishingly, the Kansas City Chiefs elected to not carry forward almost $22m of available cap room to 2009, preferring to leave their money on the table in 2008, never to be used again," writes Michael Lombardi of the National Football Post. New GM Scott Pioli has complete control of operations & personnel and only answers to owner Clark Hunt. You can bet Pioli has the green light to spend – and this cap money plus the 3rd overall pick attracted him to the job. The real question is: What does he do with Larry Johnson? 5. Tennessee -- $31m under – DT Albert Haynesworth is this year's big prize. They can't franchise him again because of incentive clauses. Insiders say Haynesworth likes Nashville and might stay on a hometown discount but that's unlikely. 2-3 other teams will offer tongue-dropping cash and he will leave. QB Vince Young's cap figure is a manageable $4.6m but it jumps to $14.2m in 2010. If they cut Young it's a $7.7m cap hit. Owner Bud Adams won't give up on the flaky kid. Overall the Titans are not big shoppers so don't look for major splashes. Note: C Kevin Mawae is 38. You know the Titans would love to pry free-agent C Jeff Saturday away from Indy. 6. Miami -- $28m under – Free-agent DE Julius Peppers is linked to the Dolphins in trade rumors. Miami has the cash and also an extra 2nd-rounder (from sending DE Jason Taylor to the Skins) so it's possible. However, they'd have to part with their 1st rounder - 26th overall - this year too. Miami has some free agents to re-sign like S Yeremiah Bell, LB Channing Crowder, & CB Andre Goodman. OT Vernon Carey is also a free agent but he'll be offered more money by someone else, if only for his versatility. S Renaldo Hill will probably walk too. 7. Buffalo -- $27m under – They can free up at least $10m more by slicing off some defensive fat, guys like S Ko Simpson, DE Chris Kelsay, DT John McCargo, etc. The Bills have a lot of UFAs to consider re-signing, however: C/G Duke Preston, CB Jabari Greer, LB Angelo Crowell, G Jason Whittle, and T Kirk Chambers. RB Fred Jackson is an exclusive rights free agent, which means they can keep him affordably – though he deserves a nice extension right now. They still gotta hammer out a mega-deal with OT Jason Peters. 8. Detroit -- $26m under – New coach Jim Schwartz is no dummy. The Lions have nowhere to go but up from 0-16. They have two 1st rounders, two 3rd rounders, and 5 of the top-82 picks overall. Owner William Clay Ford will spend money. And they could have way more than $26m in cap room – after trimming off CB Leigh Bodden, QB Daunte Culpepper, S Dwight Smith, TE Dan Campbell & G Edwin Mulitalo. This roster is in for a major overhaul and could be loaded with stud rookies and free agents. 9. San Francisco -- $26m under – In 2007 and 2008 the 49ers were top-3 in cap room, so they're still hanging in there nicely. They can cut QB Alex Smith and OT Jonas Jennings and free up $7.3 million more. Smith is coming off the busted shoulder and simply isn't a great player. Jennings has missed all or parts of 47 games the last 4 years. DE Justin Smith's big contract last year has a bloated cap figure for 2009 - $10.5 million – but they'll let it ride. Ninersnation.com is clamoring for the team to land free-agent DE Terrell Suggs at all costs. 10. Houston -- $25m under – Cutting S Will Demps, RB Ahman Green, LB Morlon Greenwood and DE Anthony Weaver could add more space to this figure. Defense and offensive line are always the big need, despite using six 1st-round picks on these two areas since 2004. The fans want free-agent DE Julius Peppers but he wants to be in a 3-4 scheme so that rules Houston out. Plus they don't want to give up the 15th pick. DE Chris Canty (Cowboys) and LB Bart Scott (Ravens) are great fits. S Brian Dawkins could be a sneaky grab who lends valuable leadership to a young defense. 11. Philadelphia -- $25m under – The big question is what do they do with Donovan McNabb? He counts $10.3 million on the cap. If they trade him it would free up $9.2 million in cap space (with only $1.1m left on the books). S Brian Dawkins, OT Tra Thomas, OT Jon Runyan, RB Correll Buckhalter and S Sean Considine are free agents. They can cut TE L.J. Smith and CB Lito Sheppard to free up $5m. Bust WR Reggie Brown is staying because they take a $3m hit if they release him. 12. Cincinnati -- $22m under – Owner Mike Brown must be overcome with grief. QB Carson Palmer, WR Chad Johnson, and OT Levi Jones were all in the top-6 highest paid at their positions – and the Bengals were last in scoring, yards, and yards per play. They franchised RT Stacey Andrews last season after failing to sign him to a long-term deal for the 2nd straight year. This year they might franchise WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh at $7.85m guaranteed for 1 year. Overall none of this cap stuff matters to Cincy if Carson Palmer's elbow is trashed. Stay tuned. 13. New England -- $21m under – This figure doesn't count the (gulp) $14.8m one-year tender for Matt Cassel. If they tag Cassel they'll have $28 million cap dollars tied up in 2 quarterbacks. However, they can make it work. DE Richard Seymour, OT Matt Light, WR Randy Moss, LB Adalius Thomas, and DE Jarvis Green have a combined $65m in cap charges – if 3 or 4 of those guys restructure it frees up $15m easily. 14. Minnesota -- $20m under – Last year the Vikings gave up a 1st & two 3rd-rounders for DE Jared Allen, then tossed him a whopping $31m in guaranteed money. Allen had 14.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and a league-high 52 QB hurries. Cha-ching! This kind of aggressive management approach should set an example for flaccid clubs like Cincinnati and St. Louis. Go get your guy. Sign a true game-changer. This year the Vikings are rumored to be after QBs Matt Cassel or Donovan McNabb. 15. Atlanta -- $20m under – Some old reliables must go, including former superstar LB Keith Brooking. He's scheduled to count $7m but his contract is voidable. Brooking's fate was sealed when he got beat by Cardinals TE Stephen Spach in the wild-card game. GM Thomas Dimitroff isn't afraid to make tough decisions – he cut franchise legends Alge Crumpler & Warrick Dunn last year. Fan favorite LB Michael Boley might be cut too. When they release Michael Vick he'll still eat up $7.1m in cap space. 16. Pittsburgh -- $19m under – Supposedly a frugal club, the Steelers spent $128m in payroll last year, 6th highest in football. The product bears out that spending. And when they did Roethlisberger's extension last March they pro-rated his $25m signing bonus over the 8 years of the deal, and his 2009 salary is "only" $4.75m, so his 2009 cap hit is a manageable $7.9m. The big question is will they re-sign G Chris Kemoeatu, T Max Starks, and T Marvel Smith, all free agents? 17. Baltimore -- $19m under – CBs Samari Rolle & Chris McAlister count a combined $17m. Pay cuts or both hit the road. The Ravens are a relatively low payroll club who's squeezed the most they could out of what they have. 3 of the top-6 defensive free agents on the 2009 market are Ravens: DE Terrell Suggs, LB Bart Scott, and LB Ray Lewis. They can't keep all three. Maybe only one. TE Todd Heap already took a pay cut once so they might just cut him. It would free up $3.6m. The big rumor is a straight-up trade: Terrell Suggs for Anquan Boldin. Wow! 18. Chicago -- $19m under – Key defensive studs like CB Nathan Vasher, CB Charles Tillman, and LB Brian Urlacher count a combined $20m. Re-do their deals. Yikes, there's $5.4m in dead money for Cedric Benson, Muhsin Muhammad, and Brian Griese. They can free up $8m by cutting OT John Tait, FB Jason McKie, DE Adewale Ogunleye, DT Dusty Dvoracek, and WR Marty Booker. The Bears are rumored to be after safety O.J. Atogwe in free agency (if he isn't franchised by St. Louis) and DE Terrell Suggs. 19. Green Bay -- $18m under – Getting rid of Brett Favre and his $12 million salary for a 3rd-round pick turned out to be the right move. Then they signed Aaron Rodgers to a cap-friendly 6-year, $65 million deal on Oct. 31 – shoveling $12 million onto the 2008 cap before the league deadline. If they waited another 24 hours the entire pay increase would have to be treated as a signing bonus -- and pro-rated over the length of the contract for cap purposes. Now they have cap room to extend WR Greg Jennings, S Nick Collins, and S Atari Bigby. 20. Cleveland -- $17m under – The Browns will probably cut Jamal Lewis. They'd be saving a cash payout of $6.4m in salary & roster bonus. RT Kevin Shaffer is a bust, but he only counts $4.4m on the cap so he might stay. WR Donte Stallworth has a roster bonus of $5m due – he'll fly out to fleece his 5th team in March. The Browns can free up $12m in cap room by cutting QB Derek Anderson, DE Shaun Smith, LB Willie McGinest, LB Andra Davis, DT Robaire Smith, and G Ryan Tucker. 21. Jacksonville -- $16m under – Owner Wayne Weaver got burned last year, giving out $23m in guaranteed dollars to WR Jerry Porter and CB Drayton Florence. He spent $122m in total payroll, 8th most in the league. They'll let OT Khalif Barnes walk in free agency. S Gerald Sensabaugh, LB Mike Peterson, and C Brad Mester might walk too. Only Meester seems to be on their list of priorities. WR Reggie Williams' contract is voidable. He's gone. 22. San Diego -- $14m under – Time for semi-rebuilding on both sides of the ball. Not a complete housecleaning, but GM A.J. Smith knows he has to shake it up. But first he has to extend Philip Rivers, Shawne Merriman and Vincent Jackson, all going into the last year of their deals. As crazy as it seems, ending it with LaDainian Tomlinson makes sense. He's 30 and his body is breaking down. Dumping him off frees up $6.725m in cap space. They also want to re-sign Darren Sproles, who was their MVP in December & January. 23. New York Giants -- $11m under – The first order of business is to lock up Brandon Jacobs, but can (will) they? He'll want to test the open market and plenty of teams could offer more money. Rumor has it the Giants want free-agent DT Albert Haynesworth (imagine that defensive line with Osi Umenyiora returning from injury) but they're actually set with DTs Fred Robbins & Barry Cofield. If Plaxico Burress is cut before June 1st he only counts $4.4m in dead money. 24. Dallas -- $10m under – Owner Jerry Jones will always empty his pockets and spend cash-over-cap so it doesn't really matter how much room Dallas has. The first order of business is Terrell Owens. The reports that his release/trade would cause a massive cap charge are true – but the "net" hit is only $680,000. In other words, he already counts $8.99 million if stays. He counts $9.67m if he leaves. They have until June 1st when his $3.1m roster bonus is due. All-World LB DeMarcus Ware is entering a contract year and deserves to be one of the 5 highest-paid defenders in the NFL. Overall, every offensive starter is signed for at least 2 more years. Cutting QB Brad Johnson, G Montrae Holland, and S Roy Williams frees up $6m. 25. Carolina -- $9m under – Jake Delhomme counts $11m on the cap. Cut him and get $6m in net cap savings. Or accept his apology for the 6 turnovers vs. Arizona, re-do his deal and free up a few million. Ask CB Ken Lucas ($6m cap charge) to restructure too. Cut WR D.J. Hackett, RB Nick Goings, LB Landon Johnson, OG Keydrick Vincent, and CB Ricardo Colclough to free up $8m. Carolina could franchise-tag DE Julius Peppers and trade him for a 1st round pick (they currently don't have a 1st rounder in this draft). We hear Cleveland and Miami are the most interested. 26. Seattle -- $9m under – The Seahawks can free up $14m in cap space by cutting QB Matt Hasselbeck, OG Mike Wahle, WR Bobby Engram, RB Maurice Morris, and WR Koren Robinson. Robinson might actually stay if his knee gets right. "He's been the key blocker on three of our four longest plays from scrimmage this year, and the receiver in our longest (90 yarder)," says Seahawks beat blogger Chris Sullivan. LB LeRoy Hill will likely be franchise-tagged at $8 million for one year. LT Walter Jones and WR Deion Branch count $17m combined by themselves. Pay cuts, fellas. 27. St. Louis -- $8m under – They could be releasing the last 3 players from their Super Bowl winning team in 1999 – WR Torry Holt, DE Leonard Little, and OT Orlando Pace. It would free up $14m and give them a chance to sign a couple free agents. WR Drew Bennett (coming off a broken foot) might not be back, though cutting him causes a $2.5m cap hit. Rams HC Steve Spagnuolo is rumored to be interested in free-agent DT Albert Haynesworth and DE Terrell Suggs. Who isn't? 28. Oakland -- $4m under – Ouch, CB DeAngelo Hall counts $5m in dead money after being cut. To make it worse he suddenly played like a Pro Bowler again in Washington. WR Javon Walker has a $5m roster bonus due next month. He'll actually collect it because of an injury guarantee – and his cap hit is $14m if they cut him. Stupid contracts, Al. OT Robert Gallery will have to rework his deal to shave off his $9.2m cap charge. 29. Indianapolis -- $2m over – Peyton Manning counts a massive $21m by himself, the 2nd biggest cap charge in NFL history behind Steve McNair's $23m in 2006. The Titans ended up locking McNair out of team headquarters that summer. Indy won't do anything quite that drastic, but they do need to discuss money with Peyton. They can free up $6m by cutting Marvin Harrison. Pro Bowl center Jeff Saturday, CB Kelvin Hayden and RB Dominic Rhodes are free agents. They could franchise-tag Saturday at $8.6m on the 2009 cap. Not too bad. Lots of work to do here, though. 30. Washington -- $3m over – Nothing new for owner Daniel Snyder, he's from the Jerry Jones Cash-Over-Cap School. Boy, they've given out some stupid contracts over the years. Heck, WR Brandon Lloyd still counts $5.5m in dead money from 2007, plus they gave away 3rd & 4th rounders for him that year. We hear the Skins have their eye on 1 stud free agent – Panthers OT Jordan Gross, who could replace the declining Jon Jansen on the right. 31. New Orleans -- $5m over – They just got the credit card bill from their 2005-2008 shopping spree. Deuce McAllister, Reggie Bush, Drew Brees, DE Will Smith, DE Charles Grant, CB Mike McKenzie, huge bonuses thrown around the room. It worked on offense, not so well on defense. Brees counts $14m on the cap but that's 33% less than Peyton Manning's rate. Smith counts $9.4m in 2009 so he needs to step it up under new DC Gregg Williams. They can cut RB Aaron Stecker, WR Devery Henderson, WR David Patten, DT Hollis Thomas, and CB Jason David to free up $11m in cap space. 32. New York Jets -- $7m over – Whew, last year they doled out over $100 million in guaranteed dollars. Those bonuses are pro-rated out over the next 4-5 years so they're going to be in and out of cap jail for a while. Laveranues Coles counts $7m and they need him to accept a pay cut, which he won't. Leon Washington deserves a big extension. Ks Jay Feely and Mike Nugent are both free agents – Nugent was hurt and Feely might have stolen the gig. ** 2009 is the last year with a salary cap under the current NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement. 16. He had one long carry. The huge run. What was Parker that year, a rookie? So, Willie Parker carved up Pat Williams, Sam Adams, Takeo Spikes, London Fletcher, Nate Clements, Antoine Winfield (Was he still here then?), Aaron Schobel and the rest of the Bills? So, that's acceptable? James Harrison also played on that team. He was being bounced back and forth between linebacker and DE at the time. Tommy Maddox was the QB and even TRIED his hardest to give us the game by throwing the pick to Clements for a TD. Hell, if I'm not mistaken, didn't Antwaan Randel El have a career game at wideout that day against us? I guess now someone wants to tell me he was good too. Not to mention that if Randel El was in there, who in the hell the other buttplugger was on the opposite side of him. Gimmie a break. Hell, Parker isn't even that good today as he was in that game. We were at home. We had to win to get in. The Jets were losing the whole time we were playing. And the Steelers had their starters on the BENCH. PATHETIC.
  17. The guys name is Nate Davis and if you actually saw his last few games you would not want him as a Bill at any round. Do you know he has a learning issue that makes hard to understand his playbook? Drew Willy would be a better choice. PTR
  18. Nate Davis didn't do himself any favors in his last 2 games with Ball State..
  19. I'd be happy with any of these WRs......UFAs......young enough & on the rise Antonio Bryant TB 83-1248-7 Devery Henderson NO 32-793-3 Nate Washington PIT 40-631-3
  20. I know we used it with Nate Clements a few years back. Is there anyone worth using it on this year?
  21. Besides Scott Norwoods field goal, what ONE play still haunts you. Mine is from the Bills last Superbowl against Dallas. Up 10-6 late in the 2nd half Nate Odomes intercepted Aikman. Kelly drove the Bills down the field to inside the 15 with time for one more play. This is the play, the Bills ran that pathetic shuttle pass to Thurman Thomas for a few yards, then kicked a field goal to take a 13-6 lead a half. They should thrown to the endzone. They could had a 17-6 half time lead and got the ball first in the second half. That would of taken out the Dallas run game and they would of won. OH well. Happy Super Sunday.
  22. I was rummaging around yesterday and found the video highlighting the 1991 Bills team that ended up getting shellacked by the Skins in Super Bowl 26. What an amazing team that was!! This is a great video. It's got everything you want, chock full of highlights, including some excellent crowd shots. There's one with this guy who had painted his head in Bills colors, and he's screaming, and there is a pause, and a guy just down the aisle looks at him and says "nice head," and the guy says, very politely, "Thank you." You've got Thurman, Andre, Bruce (only played 5 games that year) Jim, Lofton, Al Edwards, Beebe (4 TD's in one game v. Pittsburgh), Talley, Conlan , Biscuit, Jeff Wright, Seals, Nate Odomes....phenomenal The final shot of that portion of the tape is Bruce Smith giving a large hug to Bill Polian. Following that was a brief thing on OJ Simpson, and it was good to be reminded about what a great player he was. But the best part of the video was a look back at the great defense of the 60's with excerpts from Tom Day, Paul McGuire, Booker Edgerson, Marty Schottenheimer.....shots of the Rockpile and what they said was the greatest defense in the history of the AFL. (When I was a kid, some of the Bills came to Niagara Wheatfield and trounced our faculty in basketball. I asked Tom Day for an autograph, and he picked me up and carried me into the locker room, and they all signed.) It was an excellent way to start Super Bowl Sunday.
  23. It's easy to fill holes on two teams with our best players. It isn't really all that flattering to the Bills considering no team is stacked top to bottom. The Bills aren't as good at Qb as the two superbowl teams and thats the most important position. The Bills aren't as well coached as either superbowl team and that starts with the HC but trickles all the way up and down the organization. Lastly we do not have difference makers on our team. The steelers have playmakers all over on D and we don't have any. They have a Qb who can get it done in the clutch and underrated wideouts. The difference between Holmes and Evans is not as big as you would think. Hines Ward is similar to Josh Reed in style but superior in every way. Nate Washington is better than any wideout on our team not named Evans. At tightend you got Heath Miller v.s. Robert Royal! The cardinals roster is littered with stars and players building a case for Canton. Even the Cardinals defense is playing at a level we haven't seen in a long time. They create pressure and turnovers. They take chances and disrupt game plans and at the very least hit hard. We are young and some of our players might develop into great players but don't fool yourself we lack in the talent department.
  24. Of course, I'd rather play offense. But you can't assume that just because you lose the coin toss and don't get the ball first that you have no chance to win. You have a defense for a reason....to stop the opponent's offense and get the ball back. Yes, they have been rare, but there have been games won in OT by a team's defense. If Nate Odomes didn't pick off a Warren Moon pass, would the Bills have won the Comeback Game? Matt Hasselbeck opened his mouth against Green Bay and then threw a pick-6 to lose in the playoffs. I think we're all too focused on how OT games have ended on the first possession and we're way too "politically correct" (I don't have a better word/phrase) in thinking that it's not fair to the other team. It's not as if the loser of the coin toss gives up.
  25. I don't think the Tampa 2 is the Bills problem. I think the problem was that they locked in on a scheme that required a great amount of talent they didn't have, and required them to ignore the talent that was available at the time. Three years in, we're beginning to put together a decent defense for this scheme. But in 2006, they started attaching themselves to a scheme that wasn't maximizing the opportunities they had. They didn't need Whitner, they already had Lawyer Milloy back there, and he's still a successful safety, but they junked him. Ngata was on the board, but they passed to fill the hole from Milloy. London Fletcher was replaced with Paul Posluszny because of the 'scheme.' If Dwight Freeney were the man available at #8 say, then it makes sense to take him and start building around him. Or if you realize that you have a significant talent gap at CB and no options in the draft/FA. But they went out of their way to both avoid utilizing the talent they had (Fletcher, Milloy, Nate Clements), and avoiding the top players they could acquire (Haloti Ngata, Kimo Van Oellenhoffen, and of course Woodley) in order to stock a defense with a slew of real averagenauts in order to play the scheme Jauron wanted.
