Lung contusion
a bruise of the lung due to blunt trauma. Following blunt trauma (e.g. deceleration injury, blast injury), a pressure wave compresses the thoracic cavity, injuring the underlying lung. In young people, the pliable chest wall usually returns to normal without fracturing the ribs. With increasing age, rib fractures are more common.
From the description it seems this would be a more common NFL injury.
