  1. Wow, I can see how people thought this was a bomb. Terrorists frequently go thorugh a lot of work to make decorations on things they intend to explode. Just ask the troops in Iraq -- all the IEDs there have pop-culture pictures on them. Very devious of the bad guys. http://www.foxnews.com/images/root_images/013107_boston7.jpg http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/2007/US/01/31/bosto...n.adultswim.jpg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d60/laws...nites/err22.gif
  2. The rootkit (aka: spyware) is the REASON I'm not buying any more Sony products (well, that and the exploding batteries). But I suppose because they're a big company and they make crap that I use, I should just shut up and let them do whatever they want, right? I still find it hard to believe that you (or anyone) would be fine with exploiting your PC and making it easy for everyone else to do the same (remember, virus checkers can't even detect it) and it was installed without any warning or notice, nor any information about what it was doing. Put the CD in the PC and BAM, you're 0wn3d.
  3. Yeah, because when I see a box, I instantly think "bomb." That's why I never go into department stores -- too many boxes.
  4. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6314443.stm How is this fair? Download a song, and you get sued for $150,000/song. Hack someone's computer, install a rootkit, illegally monitor what they're doing, make it easy for anyone to exploit this rootkit, and make it difficult to remove, and you pay a $150/instance fine. What the hell? The FTC should hammer Sony/BMG and make an example out of them. Instead, they get a slap on the wrist -- you need to produce a receipt showing you bought the disk (who keeps those for this long?), and prove how much it cost you to have the problem fixed. Sounds like if you fix it yourself, you get nothing. Way to go. They don't even have to admin that they did anything wrong. '' http://ftc.gov/opa/2007/01/sony.htm "will be required to reimburse consumers up to $150 to repair damage that resulted directly from consumers’ attempts to remove the software installed without their consent." Pathetic. But wait, if you're not a big company, you get much more severe punishments for doing less: http://www.technologynewsdaily.com/node/5836 Three months home detention, $5000, and 300 hours of community service for defacing a website due to "a felony violation of intentionally damaging a computer used in interstate commerce." Well, I use my computer to buy things interstate, so isn't Sony guilty of the same thing? I guess I need to remember the Golden Rule - Those who have the Gold, make the Rules. CW
  5. I'd be freaked out if I lived in Boston -- The Mooninites are not a race to ignore,e specially with their super laser! Seriously though, come on, they were boxes with pictures of Mooninites on 'em and people were freaking out (I hope someone posts a picture of some of the boxes soon)? Our society really is becoming a bunch of 'fraidy cats, aren't they? It reminds me of this gem: http://www.joystiq.com/2006/04/02/tiny-ohi...by-mario-prank/ People need to lighten up a bit (read: a lot). Oh, I forgot, this is a "different world" now.
  6. You're part of the dumbed down society?
  7. Lucky Number Sleven - I never heard of it before, but it was awesome. Oh, and Firefly (and Serenity)
  8. Go, go, Bridezilla! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridezilla I wouldn't be surprised if it were true. Some brides go nuts if everything isn't perfect on their wedding day.
  9. http://web.archive.org/web/20060221145344/...e.com/cookbook/ I'm hoping Scott puts the cookbook back and simply removes the page to fill in new recipes... This is my favorite (artichoke dip): http://web.archive.org/web/20051113145235/...gory=Appetizers These are excellent as well: http://web.archive.org/web/20051113082033/...gory=Appetizers CW
  10. Wow, that's actually pretty cheap, consider it's a 31 day vacation! If I were going to do it though, I'd want the ports to be a little longer. For example, when we were at Honolulu, we were there from roughly 8am to 11pm. Let me know how the cruise around Austriailia/NZ is when you get back. CW
  11. Cruise ship - that's how we got to Hawaii this past summer. (of course we flew to San Diego...)
  12. Exactly. If Reed doesn't deserve it, no receiver aside from Rice does. Buffalo 3rd 10:39 26 yd pass Reed from Reich (Christie PAT) 4/59 24-35 Buffalo 3rd 13:00 18 yd pass Reed from Reich (Christie PAT) 4/23 31-35 Buffalo 4th 11:52 17 yd pass Reed from Reich (Christie PAT) 7/74 38-35
  13. I didn't when I first moved here - no DSL available. I think I can get DSL now, but havn't bothered since my company is footing the bill. The $65/mo includes "lifeline cable," meaning all locals and I think some public access. I never use them, but if I cancel it, my bill will actually go up. The lifeline costs roughly $8/mo, and I get a $15/mo discount for having it. Go figure. CW
  14. If it makes you feel any better, I"m paying $65/mo for Comcast broadband. And it's only 3 or 4 mbps.
  15. Yup. That's one big reason my wife and I are going to drive from Minneapolis to Buffalo sometime in May. It'll be cool to spend some time in Chicago and Cleveland/Canton as well. Besides, I have to justify my GPS purchase somehow CW
  16. Some airports request to take the camcorder out, but most don't. I've never had to take a camera out. You always have to take the laptop out. The "security theater" at airport security is a joke. It's really not protecting anyone from much of anything (for example, it's trivial to put some liquids in your pants, taped to your leg, under your shirt, etc, and nobody will figure it out, so why bother banning?). CW
  17. Sorry, you can't consider anything "windchill" until the real temperature is below freezing. A different kind of cold? Suck it up, man! Stop being such a weenie.
  18. I think he was being sarcastic
  19. Screw the Stars and their fans. I live in Minnesota now, so I have two reasons to hate them. Sabres vs Wild for the Cup.
  20. The Wii and 360 are both generally under that right now (you have to hunt for a good deal on the 360 to do it -- I spent $330, which was good enough for me). I've still been hunting for a Wii, but no luck yet. Here's a great site that shows Target's stock (generally valid within an hour or two). Just change the zip code in the URL: http://crayz.org/target_wii.php?zip=55126 CW
  21. That's an awesome story! Rock - good luck, but I'm sure you'll do fine. Maybe you'll totally luck out and find a job in a few weeks, thus collecting TWO paychecks for a few months! There's been a few resume threads on here lately, so if you want extra sets of eyes to help you out, we'd be more than happy to help CW
  22. Huh? I'm not Wilmer Valderamma.... Oh yeah, the guy who stole my name, nevermind.
  23. Not Paying Attention at the Virginia DMV Two men have been issued Virginia driver's licenses, even though they were wearing outlandish disguises when they had their pictures taken at the Department of Motor Vehicles. The videos are on-line. The Virginia DMV is now demanding that the two come back and get real pictures taken. I never thought I would say this, but I agree with everything Michelle Malkin says on this issue: "These guys have done the Virginia DMV -- and the nation -- a big favor. Many of us have tried to argue how much of a joke these agencies and our homeland security remain after 9/11--particularly the issuance of driver's licenses (it was the Virginia DMV that issued state photo ID to several 9/11 hijackers who were aided by illegal aliens). "But few dissertations and policy analyses drive the message home more effectively than these two damning videos." I honestly don't know if she realizes that REAL ID won't solve this kind of problem, though. Nor will it solve the problem of people getting legitimate IDs in the names of people whose identity they stole, or real IDs in fake names by bribing DMV employees. Videos: Malkin: http://michellemalkin.com/archives/006589.htm REAL-ID: http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2005/05/real_id.html
  24. I don't think anyone is paying double for a PS3. You can walk into almost any store and buy one for retail price if you want... The Wii, on the other hand, is hard to find. I'm with you though - I want one, but will wait until I can walk into a store to buy one (no camping out, no eBay, etc).
