  1. Just thought I'd share this here and hopefully a Bills fan will win my latest giveaway http://www.neowin.net/news/giveaway-star-trek-usb-flash-drives-by-mimoco Good luck!
  2. I have a '99 Toyota Camry with ~175,000 miles on it. My first car (bought it new out of college -- I got a signing bonus for a few grand with instructions to buy a car since I'd be on call 24x7 ). I kind of want a Dodge Charger, but this one has never had a problem, is paid off (for a long time!), and has relatively low insurance rates... Plus, the Charger isn't exactly known for its reliability, so not sure I want to go that route. We'll see. My wife has an '04 Toyota Corolla with ~230,000 miles on. No real issues with hers either, although she was rear-ended last week and the bumper is now broken. Their insurance company will pay to fix it, although we're debating just taking the money and using it to buy a new car once winter is over.
  3. Happened to my sister too. She got home from work at around midnight, went to the fridge for a bite to eat and fainted. Ended up breaking her nose pretty bad.
  4. It's not worth $30B. If this went into effect, more people will just do shootings in malls. Or ballparks. Or churches. Or... or... or... Anywhere that people congregate is potentially a target and you can't "secure" each and every target. So that $30B would be completely wasted. (If we had unlimited resources, that'd be one thing - but we don't. And just like airport "security" hasn't improved our safety, neither would this option)
  5. Or just shoot through (or punch through) the walls, which are usually just drywall and easy to get through. Or wait until people are in the hallways or the lunch room or the bus stop. Great post.
  6. I don't know, my job probably consumes about 60-75% of my life. I'm one of the first in the office and one of the last out, but I don't find that a burden because I love what I do. My parents say I work too much, and my wife schedules vacations on cruise ships far away from land so that I can't work when on vacation. I guess there's my balance!
  7. That and, in these cases anyway, the attacker has usually been killing themselves as well. It seems like the "Death by Cop" thing that was really "popular" there for awhile.
  8. First of all, again with the reading comprehension, did you actually READ the article? For example: "The following month, on May 12, a man named Wu Huangming killed seven children and two adults with a meat cleaver at a kindergarten in Shaanxi Province. That attack was followed by an August 4 assault by Fang Jiantang, who killed three children and one teacher with a knife at a kindergarten in Shandong Province." Second, how is saying "For those who say guns are evil... Do we have to ban knives too" equal to saying, "Ban guns!"
  9. Then perhaps you have a reading comprehension problem. Where in my post am I advocating for a pro-gun-control agenda???
  10. I'm guilty of that -- I love my job (usually...) and find great pleasure and accomplishment in in. I told my wife that if we had won the $500M Powerball, I wouldn't quit - at least not right away. Maybe there's something wrong with me....
  11. Are you talking about me....?
  12. There was a big knife attack in a school in China: Apparently mass knifings (?) in China's elementary schools have been on the rise. Does that mean China's effed too? http://forums.twobil...es-22-children/
  13. For those who say guns are evil... Do we have to ban knives too? http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-57559179/china-school-knife-attack-leaves-23-injured/
  14. Ummm.... Wikipedia (I know it's not a definitive source, so someone may want to doublecheck) shows there's been five school shootings in Canada since Columbine, so your article seems to be a bit off since it only shows one... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_shooting#2010s
  15. It wasn't pointless, related to the quoted post. The poster said you can't feel safe going anywhere -- when in reality, we're safer now than we were 20-30 years ago. Yes, it's a tragedy, but let's not take a single tragedy and extrapolate it into thinking the entire country is effed because of it.
  16. Is now a bad time to point out that, statistically, we're much safer now than in the past? http://www.nij.gov/topics/crime/gun-violence/welcome.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_the_United_States
  17. Some people would rather put in their 9-5 and then go home and enjoy family/life, and there's nothing wrong with that. My parents were exactly like that (and my mom still is). They never made work a priority in life for whatever reason, and they've made a decent living I suppose -- my mom still makes just slightly over minimum wage, and the work is hard and grueling, but she does it every day. That said, in general I've noticed that many people just expect their job will always be there and will always pay a certain amount, and that's where problems come in. You can't expect that you'll always make $15/hour cleaning bathrooms in an airport, for example. There definitely is a cultural problem in this country though. While cleaning a bathroom isn't really a difficult skill, this country seems to frown upon anyone who isn't college educated. The general thought is that you HAVE to go to college, which is ridiculous. There's nothing wrong with learning a trade - carpentry, plumbing, electrical work are all good trades that can lead to high paying jobs (especially as more people just go to school, don't learn these things on their own, and end up having to hire them out all the time).
  18. The guy's a janitor and he expects to always make $15+/hour because of it? My mom still works in the laundry department at a hotel - and she'd LOVE to make $11/hour! I agree with your statement 100% -- continue to improve yourself. Barring that, get another job. I have my full time job and two part time jobs (writing and teaching). Not because I need the money, but because it's great for the resume and will (hopefully) help me get a job later in life when I don't want to be in IT anymore. I don't sit back and expect good things to happen - I bust my butt to make them happen. That's different than people (like my mom and I'm sure the janitor in the story...) who bust their butt working -- but don't ever look to improve their lot in life.
  19. That happened in Wisconsin too, after Walker limited collective bargaining power. Lots of teachers went to Madison to protest, and the schools closed. Even better, some doctor's were there writing out notes saying they were sick and should be excused. Ridiculous.
  20. How was I comparing the two cases, other than to say the media was portraying the deceased as innocent victims...?
  21. You suck. I thought you were saying that actually happened.
  22. To be fair, it seems that all NFL teams do this. I don't get it, but it happens all the time.
  23. Hockey has a "diving" penalty -- no risk for an NFL player diving.
  24. Just got this from FootballGuys: Hi Folks, Bad news for Buffalo as ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that Bills RB Fred Jackson suffered a torn medial collateral ligament that is likely to end his season. Thanks to Footballguy Cecil Lammey for the headsup.
