What’s particularly galling here is that the official got it right and then was overruled based on an incorrect interpretation of the rule. Totally inexcusable.

So it’s OK to enforce a stupid rule in a ticky tacky manner vs the Bills in a key situation, but “common sense” must prevail when the KO return man flips a live football to the referee in his own end zone? (Not saying that’s your position.)

The JJ Watt ball washing was the single most irritating feature of the broadcast yesterday, although that’s probably because I watched the game in Canada and wasn’t subjected to the insipid Aaron Rodgers/Mahomes commercials.

I can’t ever remember seeing the KO return man catch the ball and casually flip it to the ref without downing it. If you’re right though, then why did this particular ref decide, on this play, to treat the flip from the return man like a live ball and refuse to catch it, notwithstanding that return men “do it all the time” without consequence? Did he just decide on the spot to screw the Texans? To me—and under the rules—it’s no different than if a punt returner fielded a punt without signaling a fair catch and then flipped the ball to the ref without attempting to advance it. Clear fumble and a bonehead play by the return man.

The ref knew right away too, because he declined to catch the ball when the returner tossed it to him. He was watching to see if the return man signaled a fair catch, and when he didn’t see it, he treated it as a live ball, as the rule requires.
