Perhaps it was the 122 catches for 1606 yds and 11 tds last season. Just saying. If you are curious about the stats, check the Buffalo News from this morning. He has size, speed and clearly good hands. He's not a first rounder, but he is a good pick up in the second if the Bills go with D in the first round.
-
The best way for Buffalo to be sure they get a tight end would be to trade down and acquire an additional second or third round pick. Particularly if they can get an additional second. That way they can get one of the three top TEs in the draft, AND a CB in round 2. Buffalo should NOT use a First on a TE but definitely their second. A guy like Fred Davis, Dustin Kellar, or Martellus Bennett is likely worth a Second.
-
I'd rather not take either of the two most overrated players in the draft. Pick: Derrick Harvey or Devin Thomas.
-
If the guy can play ball, I don't give a crap who his agent is.

Way to pick the one time TD actually did pick for need to try and say he wasn't a BPA drafter. I submit to you all of the following TD choices. JP Losman Lee Evans Roscoe Parrish Kevin Everett Willis McGahee The list is longer and I'm not going to continue, but you get my point. Mayo is not worth a number 11 pick. If you think Devin Thomas isn't worth one, then this guy certainly isn't. And IIRC Flowers soared up the charts with a great combine and pro day and many scouts saw him becoming a super star in the NFL. Mayo is going to be an above average linebacker, but you're talking about the guy like he is the next coming of Ray Lewis. Sorry to disappoint, but at #11, there will be at least six players who are better than Mayo that I would much rather see in a Bills uniform, even at the LB position. Here are some examples of Better Players. Derrick Harvey Keith Rivers Quentin Groves Rashard Mendenhall (By your theory its ANY player who is BPA right? We have ML, but Mendenhall is better than Mayo) Philip Merling Antoine Cason Ryan Clady John Otah Dan Connor (PSU LB who is much better than Mayo. Try looking at their stats and comparing the Conf. they played in). Arguably, Devin Thomas and James Hardy are better than Mayo, but I think there is less concensus on those two. TD was the master of BPA drafting, and it was because of that, when the time came for him to draft for need, he screwed up and took a guy who turned out like most of his draft picks. Washed up or overrated. But hey, let's continue that string into the future. Eventually even the sun shines on a dog's ass.

Right on two counts.

Buffalo better active in the 1st RD if we are to win

I'm not a huge Shockey fan, but trading back a number of times to stockpile picks wouldn't be a bad idea. I can see use moving back with the Chiefs or Philly and acquiring a second or third rounder from either one. If we get Sheppard, for whom the Eagles want a second round pick, I have a feeling you would do no better than a third as a throw in. Still, getting Sheppard would be HUGE for the D and would put us, IMO, in the elite defensive ranks in the AFC. Here's to hoping. -
Glad to see the majority of poll takers in this one are exhibiting some sense. We need a WR in the worst way.
-
The only thing that is a dream world, I think are getting both Sheppard and Shockey. That's only because I think Shockey is either signed with Tampa or is in serious talks with them. I can't remember which it was that ESPN was talking about yesterday. Your picks are perfectly possible, though Cason is unlikely in the Second. More likely, Buffalo will end up with Brandon Flowers there. I like the Hardy, Pollack and Jones Picks A LOT and think that provides a very likely scenario. If we do enter into a trade with Philadelphia, we will have to get Sheppard and a third for them to trade up, and we may have to give up a fifth. Big deal. For a guy like Sheppard and to be able to get Jason Jones in the third would be well worth that pick. Nice work.

He's shooting up the charts the same way Erik Flowers did. And man, he turned out great. BPA drafting is what Donablow did for all those years here, which is what sent this team into the depths of oblivion. You have to take the best player at a NEED position. Mayo is not in a NEED position. Would it be nice to have an LB upgrade? Sure, but they don't need one. We NEED a receiver to play opposite Evans and who can give our offense a weapon not name Lynch or Evans. I could maybe see a CB getting picked at #11, but it seems the Bills have targeted Thomas, and I think that is a great pick. Far better than Mayo, who has never once in any mock I have looked at been taken ahead of 18. Maybe you thought Erik Flowers was the man, but I'd prefer not to take another one.

Chris Brown says Bills Trade with Lions pick up 3rd
ax4782 replied to Beerball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Very true. I think we can get a second to move from a team, particularly since so many teams want to move up, but would rather avoid the top ten due to the salary requirements that those picks garnish. Lions want Harvey, Eagles are targeting a CB, and the Chiefs apparently have needs because there is talk that they want to move up as well. Buffalo could likely get a 2nd for the swap, or get both of KC's thirds. That wouldn't be a bad deal either. And with how many picks the Chiefs have in the first three rounds after the Jared Allen deal, it would not surprise me to see them give up their third rounders to move up and get their guy. -
I think that pretty much sums it up. If the Bills don't grab a TE until the later rounds, Jermichael Finley from Texas would not be a bad pick in the Fourth or Fifth round.

You left off a couple of good ones. Adrian Arrington Jerome Simpson

Draft: Who would you like us to come away with
ax4782 replied to lets_go_bills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would like to see Buffalo trade down and acquire an extra second and do the following: 1. Devin Thomas/James Hardy WR 2. Brandon Flowers CB 2. Fred Davis/Martellus Bennett TE 3. Mike Pollack C -
Buffalo trades down to #17 with Kansas City, giving our #11 for their #17 and their 2nd. 1. Devin Thomas WR 2. Brandon Flowers CB 2. Fred Davis TE 3. Jason Jones DE 4. Andre Fluellen DT 4. Jerome Simpson WR 5. Shawn Crable OLB 6. Kory Lichtensteiger C 7. Matt Spanos C/G 7. Josh Johnson QB 7. Jonathan Zenon CB Buffalo addresses their three need positions in the first two rounds, and drafts talented depth at positions where we are solid, but need better rotational players. I think Fluellen is a bit underrated and is an excellent pick up in the Fourth Round. Flowers may be gone at #37, which is the Chiefs 2nd that I have us getting, and if that is the case, look for them to take Dan Connor LB Penn State if he is still available. If both are gone, don't be surprised if Buffalo takes another WR, like Malcolm Kelly who I think is going to slip to that point in the second round.

I live in Michigan and have watched all of the MSU games this year. Let me try and dispel your fears about this kid. He's a beast. If you worry about his size, he's 6'2" 217, exactly the same size Moulds was coming out of the 95' draft. He has sick leaping ability and is not afraid to go up for a jump ball or go over the middle and take a hit, which is exactly what we're looking for in our #2 receiver. Also, he is the fastest receiver in the draft, and his combination of size and speed make him a very dangerous threat. When you rack up the numbers he did in the Big-Ten, you know he has to be at least above average in terms of talent. Two more things that make Thomas a very good pick. He has never had an injury issue. I don't think he missed a single game at MSU. That's an advantage over Kelly and Sweed, both of whom have serious injury problems. Sweed's wrist is still a big question mark, and Kelly has serious knee issues. Second, Thomas is a great kickoff and punt returner. A combination of McGee and Thomas on kickoffs is going to lead to more TD returns and better starting position, because kickers won't be able to "kick away" from McGee anymore. The fact is, I would BUY on Devin Thomas and pass on Kelly and Sweed at #11. The only other receiver, IMO that is worth taking that high is James Hardy. I also think that Malcolm Kelly has slipped to the second round, and even if the Bills draft Thomas at #11, don't be surprised if the Bills take Kelly at #42 as well, if he does in fact slip that far.

I hate the term "reach" when referring to draft choices. The only reason the so-called experts use that word is to hedge their bets when they talk. If they call a guy a reach, and he doesn't pan out, they say "See, I was right. He never should have been drafted there." If the guy does pan out, they say "well, we thought that was a bit high, but he was definitely first round potential." That being said, I would be happy if the Bills "reached" and drafted" Groves Thomas Hardy

Lito Sheppard Traded to Tampa Bay
ax4782 replied to BenchBledsoe's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So far there haven't been any reports of a deal being done on any of the major sports news sites. In fact I didn't see anything even mentioning that he was in Tampa. I would like to get Sheppard via a trade in the draft, but our corners right now are pretty good. If you look at their numbers from last year, they did a very good job, the problem was, QBs had all day to throw the ball, and eventually someone is going to get open. The improved pass rush should help out the coverage guys this year. -
Here's a compelling arguement for us to take a
ax4782 replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That makes one gigantic assumption. That said rookie "star" will come in ane have an immediate impact. Unfortunately, at every position on the field, rookies rarely contribute with all pro numbers. While Derrick Harvey or Quentin Groves have the tools to be good in three years, they are not going to be the monsters in week one that you are assuming. -
Would drafting Keith Rivers be a much smarter move
ax4782 replied to 1billsfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There's a big risk in taking almost anyone in the draft. However, where you get you "%s" on success and failure must be from the same place that the original post emerged. The fact is you clearly did not see Devin Thomas play a single game at MSU, against Big Ten competition. The guy is a straight baller and has the same size and speed as most of the solid or better receiving talent in the league. His chances are better than you give for him. Also Rivers is overrated. Sorry, but that's my opinion. His stock is slipping and I wouldn't be surprised if he fell to the mid teens. We don't need an LB and we do need a receiver, more than any other position. -
To answer the post, the talk was about Willis, Lynch, Poz, Revis, Hall. As to this response my answer is WHAT? Yeah, Willis is a hell of a linebacker, but if you thought our Offense was terrible last year, imagine that season without Lynch. Again, last year Buffalo was smart and drafted a great player at a position of greatest need in the first round. Even if Willis was there at our spot, I would have rather had them take Lynch. They both had amazing rookie seasons, but Buffalo should be drafting best player at need positions, not BPA. We tried that when TD was here and that approach didn't work.

Can Someone Explain the Logic in reaching for a WR
ax4782 replied to taterhill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Very nice post. I couldn't have said it any better. The Bills have NEEDS to fill and frankly, I don't care which person they get to fill those needs, as long as it is the best player available at that position. I feel like Thomas, Hardy, or Kelly are all viable options, though I would prefer Hardy or Thomas. I like you expect our #2 to have a 50-700-5 TD year. That would be enough to take the pressure off of Evans. I believe our needs in order are as follows. 1. WR 2. TE 3. C 4. CB 5. DE 6. LB 7. FB 8. DT 9. RG 10. S 11. T 12. P 13. K Buffalo should address their needs in order of necessity. I frankly wounldn't mind us taking two WRs this draft. One at #11 and another with one of our 4s. I think Buffalo takes a TE in the second, be it Fred Davis, Martellus Bennett or Dustin Kellar. Any of the three are play makers. Again, really nice post. I like it when people think with logic and reason. -
I tend to disagree. Strahan is at the end of a stellar career, no question, but he is old and tired and I don't even know that he is going to play much this year. I think Schobel, when he isn't double and triple teamed every play, per 2003-5, is as good as either of the other two. You can feel free to disagree, but that's my opinion, looking purely at their stats and performance. Kelsay is not in the same league. I'm not saying that the Bills shouldn't draft some D-Line talent in this draft, I just think that they are less of a needed quantity than a top WR and another good WR.

Can Someone Explain the Logic in reaching for a WR
ax4782 replied to taterhill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Nice post. -
Wasn't that the point of bringing in Stroud, Johnson and Mitchell? Perhaps I missed that one. The reason the Pats had trouble with the Giants' pass rush is because of the type of passing game on which they relied, and their blocking schemes in the SB just didn't work. Frankly, the Giants should have beaten them in the regular season too. The fact is, a good pass rush is always a factor to winning games. However, the pass rush IS already going to be better with Stroud and Johnson coming in. Stroud and McCargo are the likely starters at DT, and both are very good players. McCargo really turned it on last season and he looks like he's ready to really have a monster year. Those two are going to demand respect in the middle, which will take those constant double teams off of Schobel and Kelsay, allowing them an opportunity to get the QB more often. I think Buffalo should take a DT or a DE in the draft, probably in the Fourth or Fifth round, but not in the first. We have other NEEDS that are bigger. That was my point. Just to clarify, my draft would look like this. 1. Devin Thomas WR 2. Brandon Flowers CB or Calais Campbell DE 3. John Carlson TE 4. Mike Pollace C 4. Adrian Arrington WR 5. Andre Fluellen DT 6. Shawn Crable OLB (If available) 7. BPA 7. BPA 7. BPA That being said, if Malcolm Kelly did fall to that spot in the second round, we should take him as well, for all the reasons I previously stated.
