What's wrong in the patés, foie gras or Bordeaux?! it's a lot healthier than what you'll find in 90% of american restaurants! -

i was expecting a few french jokes but you could not pick a worst town than Grenoble for that one...Grenoble is the only town with Paris to have received the "Croix de la Liberation" after the war for the courage and actions of resistance of its people during the german occupation. And even during the 1940 defeat the Alps Front never gave an inch of ground to the attacking italian troops, they even took the Mont Cenis plateau, a high altitude plain that France kept after the war. From an american site i just found: "On another front, that of the Alps, the situation is very different. On June 10, 1940, Italy declares the war in France. In spite of manpower much higher than the French, the Italian offensive is a general failure. The armies of the Duce are stopped everywhere in Maurienne, Briançonnais, Ubaye, in Queyras and the Alpes-maritimes.On the other hand, the German army, which on June 17 is in Langres, constitutes a very serious threat. The troops of Reich crossed the Rhone to Lyon but run up against the French device in Voreppe. They are stopped by the French units, on June the 23 and 24. Only the news of the signature of the armistice, will put an end to the hostilities in this area. The army of the Alps remained unconquered" Voreppe is a Grenoble's suburb -

He Dean! it's been such a long time how are you doing?!! You're right he has not made the regular season team yet... but well it's enough to make us all proud in the Centaurs Family! and thanks for your congratulations but all i did for his success is taking care of the Grenoble's team gear and field and computing the team's stats, and of course sharing with him a few beers and laughs after his games! so well i don't deserve any congrats! -

Thailog i had forgoten how polite and nice you were! -
Philippe Gardent has signed a contract with the Washington Redskins yesterday. He's LB, Defensive MVP of this year's NFL Europe AND an old friend of mine! The second frenchman ever to sign a contract with a NFL team and again a guy from Grenoble (my hometown and Canadians' Cristobal Huet's hometown!!). He has started playing football with my old team the Grenoble Centaurs. He was 17 and had no clue what football was about just curious to discover this game... the first game he played for us i don't think he knew half the basic rules but he was so good yet that he was instantly our best man on defense! The final score of this game: 0-0 the only scoreless football game i have ever seen. This is just crazy to think that 7 or 8 years later he's now in the NFL!!! more info (in french) here: http://www.centaures-footus.com

He Guys! You should all be proud of your team! Even if they don't pass the first round this is by far the best USA team i have seen play. In any other group team USA 'd pass that round easily. The 94, 98 and 02 teams were good classic northern european style soccer teams, this one has style, substance and heart, the whole package ! The progress made by american soccer is really impressive. You're not far from the best and in 4 or 8 years you could shake the world!!! And well it's not over yet!! Good luck for the Ghana game! and don't watch France tonight, this is too ugly to watch! I hope we lose and let the real teams play for the Cup!

Did anyone here read that book?
olivier in france replied to olivier in france's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Well you do not need an huge "foundation" Gavin. The Human rights as defined by the US Constitution and the "Déclaration Universelle des Droits de l'Homme" is a big enough "foundation" in terms of principles and morals. ... Personally this is the only "foundation" i respect and even with only this one it's sometimes difficult to know what are the shades of gray that are acceptable and the ones that are not... -

Frankly Gavin for me intellectual laziness is found more often in people seeing the world as black and white than in people seeing it in shades of grey... it's so easy to see yourself as the white knight surrounded by evil forces... It's that kind of manicheism that i hate to see so often in both the US and french international policies... -

Neo Euro? what is that? BHL was the first "thinker" to reject the post 1968 leftist intellectual monopoly we had in France in the 70ies (he and his friends were called the "new philosophs"), he's deeply anti-marxist. He has tried to mobilise the media and the public opinion each time democracy and human rights have been under siege in the world for about 30 years even if the political or ideological powers in France were involved or did not want to see what was going on... As far as i've heard about his new book he's trying to make a realistic portrait of today's America, trying to tackle the usual clichés french have in mind. I've seen him in different tv shows and like a few of us he's really upset with the crazy anti-americanism that is raging around here and if his book does not look pro-american, it looks as objective as possible, and that's a lot yet in the sea of stupidities we hear here about the USA everyday. -

Lol! with the age of BHL i think he could be Marv's son ... that'd be one amazing pair!! -
I'd like to know if some of you have readen "American Vertigo" by french philosopher Bernard Henry Levy and what you thought about the book. (and please no blabla about how you hate a french guy writing a book about the USA...). I've not readen it yet but i've just bought it. Levy is someone i have tremendous respect for.

USA Soccer World Ranking....
olivier in france replied to ajzepp's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Meazza, the last time someone has told a Lazio fan his team is full of commies he has not survived the day!! Lazio is the white collar fascist team and AS Roma is the communist-left wing blue collar team. You're fooling yourself thinking your team's fans are the more moderate! -

the 80% in France are all national taxes... no local taxes on this thanks God! current price here is around 1.30 euro per liter... about 1.60 dollars per liter... or 5.15 dollars a gallon if i remember well what a gallon contains... -

Hmmm..Soccer vs Hockey...
olivier in france replied to Ghost of BiB's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
the 82 World Cup was just incredible, all teams had very peculiar styles and it was a great show, i remember the games like they were played yesterday... and of course the semi France vs Germany is probably the greatest game ever...
