  1. The rules are complicated in an uncapped year - it's not a total free-for-all. There would be a limit on how big a contract a player can receive: I think it's about a 25% increase over his last one. Also, playoff teams can't add that many additional players - the top teams can only replace players who leave through unrestricted free agency. Additionally, you would need at least six years of service to be an unrestricted free agent, meaning anyone drafted since 2004 would play by restricted free agency rules. Peters would be stuck. Ditto Edwards, Butler, Hardy, Parrish, Williams, Lynch, McCargo, Puz, DiGiorgio, Whitner, Simpson, McKelvin, Greer. It won't doom us, it would just be a huge, ugly mess for the league and the players.

That's why it's there - to make sure there will be no uncapped year.

Mike is right. Players will have to wait 6 years to become an UFA. Along with everything else that will happen, neither side wants this.

  2. The sad thing is that Ralph Wilson can just end all this talk by selling the damn team. I love Mr. Wilson and will always defend him. But I have no idea why he isn't setting something up for the long-term stability of this team.

As for the Sonics, I know they were struggling to get a new lease for an arena, but this is like if the Toronto Blue Jays moved to Buffalo. Oklahoma City isn't the mecca of a booming economy.

You have no proof that he has not done this.

As a Buffalo Bills fan, here are a few lessons I'm taking from this situation (none of which I suppose are shockingly new to the hardened cynics among us):

    1. 40+ years of tradition aren't enough to keep a sports team in town.

    2. Don't trust new owners from outside the state (or in our case, the nation).

    3. Don't expect league commissioners or other franchise owners to stand in the way of a better opportunity to make money (in spite of whatever PR BS they spew).

    4. Worst case scenarios can and do happen; prepare accordingly.

Your thoughts? I'm sure there are a few Buffalo Braves fans lurking around with some heated opinions right now.

The main difference is that our owner does not want to move the Bills or else they would already be gone. The Braves and Sonics were sold to owners from other cities whose main goal was to move those teams.

  4. This is great. I love signing the young, unheralded guys to long-term deals. May as well take care of Butler now than waiting until next season when he's in a contract year with two full season's as a starter under his belt.

Except if he pulls a Peters and goes to the Pro Bowl and wants more money.

  5. If I had a million dollars I'd buy us a D-End (Jason Taylor). Shall we upgrade or stand pat?

  6. So the player must be loyal to the team unless he under-performs, then its okay for the team to cut him? If the player out-performs his contract though he has to shut his mouth and be loyal?

Why do the fanboys always take the teams side?

I would like you to explain this train of thought please. Why should players be loyal to their contracts if the teams aren't?

Exactly. There is no such thing as loyalty and I get tired of hearing about it. This is a big money business where the employees want to get as much as they can as often as they can and management wants to pay as little as possible as often as they can. It's pretty simple. This is why I hate the off-season. Bring on the games!!!

  7. What possible harm can come from bringing him in for training camp at least? Never mind if he can beat out Fowler, not that that wouldn't be great. I'd like to see him here just to give preston, etc. a run for their money.

How: I'd sign him for 4 million over 2 years but only give him $500k in guaranteed money/signing bonus and put $2 million up as roster bonus, one mil for each year, and see how it goes. Or something like that. Give him enough so he takes it but make 80% of it based on performance.

What makes you think he would sign for only $500k guaranteed? It will take more than that.

  8. If Buffalo dont take care of Jason Peters.............

Simple fact ladies and gents. Our left tackle is the main frame behind this offense. You think we can put any trust into Kirk Chambers? He sucks......Anyone see him play? He's the Tim Anderson of the offense.

Im sorry, but if Buffalo dont take care of this Peters thing ASAP, the offense simply wont click!

And I dont care who you have on offense....

He's not going to sit the whole year. He will show up whether he gets a new contract or not.

  9. It could be considered a tough call, and the Bills do seemingly hold all the cards, for now. Still, I am hoping that they think of a way to make him happy. The guy can flat out play, and he does so at a position that is next to impossible to fill with a star, unless you are talking about a top 5 pick.

His best way to get a new deal is to show up. He will not get a new contract while he sits out. He is our best lineman at the top position.

  10. They did, and then they signed a LG and a RT to much bigger contracts. I heard Dockery call Peters "The Franchise" on Sirius Radio, and he makes twice as much as Peters.

Under normal circumstances I would agree with you if you think that they should wait, but not this time. Peters, if he continues to develop at this rate, will be the best LT in the history of the Bills and yes, this does include Wolford.

    Jmo.

I understand your point and don't want to argue, but what if he doesn't continue to develop? What if he gets his money and get lazy? Tough call for the Bills right now and Peters is taking a very costly chance sitting out. Plus contacts go up every year. Just because another player signs a larger contract, you are not entitled to one.

  11. The NFL doesn't translate to normal work contracts. In the NFL, the owner can cancel the contract at any time by cutting the player and the player only gets guaranteed money. Thus, the player's only recourse for these somewhat one-sided contracts is to try to renegotiate them.

So I have some sympathy for the NFL player in these situations--it's not easy to say "just show up and play--you have a contract" when the owners aren't held to the same standard.

It's a situation unique in pro sports to the NFL because injuries can stop a career on a dime.

This a good point, but the guarantees are usually in the $10M-$20M range so I do not feel that bad for them.
