JETS: Pennington and his surgery
MartyBall4Buffalo replied to nick in* england's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Other than the 2002 season. Chad Pennington has been a really mediocre quaterback, yes his completion % is high, but since week 13 of 2003 pennington has thrown 18 td's and 17 interceptions. Considering the contract given to him seems hardly worthy of it. The Jets are anchored by a solid ground game and defense. Good enough that if they get even mediocre play from the qb position they can win 8-10 games. However the problem becomes for the jets. That 9 times out of 10 if pennington is in a must win game for the jets, that the jets won't win. While he's a smart qb with tremendous accuracy on short routes, when it comes to stretching defenses down the field he fails miserably. What I've noticed is teams that effectivly blitz pennington usually win against jets fairly easy. In our home game against the jets last year, I was actually more worried about losing when quincy carter was in, as carter had the arm to stretch our defense, while Pennington had the arm to flutter a 15 yard pass that was picked off by lawyer milloy who was sitting on the ground. Now with this surgery the qb issue becomes a bigger one for the jets. Will Pennington regain even the mediocre arm strength he had, or will it become worse, and if so how will this effect the new open offense that mike heimerdinger plans to run, with more emphasis on intermediate and deep passes, and away from pennington's strength of throwing to his backs and te's. I look for the jets to take a step back this season, as penningtons weaknesses become more exposed -

Is Aron Schobel a mediocre player?
MartyBall4Buffalo replied to Fake-Fat Sunny's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
We didn't lead the league in sacks but where tied for 3rd with 45 atl- 48 phil- 47 tampa/buf/ne/ind-45 two of these teams are not like the others. Atl- patrick kearny and sack master dt rod coleman Phil- Jevon Kearse tampa- simeon rice ind- dwight freeney Those 4 teams have what many consider "elite status" de's, While Ne/Buffalo rely mostly on the run blitz and zone blitz to get pressure on and sack the quaterback. Schobel is a good player, he's steady and definitly not a hole in our defense. Is he elite? hardly. It all depends what you're looking to get out of your defensive end. If you're looking for 10-15 sacks a season, than aaron schobel isn't that guy. If you're looking for a de who will give you a solid 8 sack season, who is quick enough to drop back into coverage, and pressure the qb and lead to errant throws than schobel fits that bill. Schobel is a highly underrated player, No he's not julius peppers, but he's good enough for what's asked of him. It still would be nice to have a pure pass rusher on this defense. -
Overall I agree with your assessments of Tom Donahoe's job thus far as the gm of the bills. However me personally I hold 3 things to be self evident. Gm's should be graded on on the field product. Overall Team, and Win/Loss record. 26-38- 1 winning season, 2 losing seasons 1 .500 season No Playoffs- He get's an D here. I know 2001 should be a wash, but the 3 season's since than have seen nothing but turnover after turnover, from coaches to schemes, and have had melt in the brewing pot of mediocrity. I expect more of the same this year, while also being fed up with it. Overall Team Roster- Gm's should also be graded on how they fill out a team. While Donahoe has done a good job finding 1st and 2nd rd players, (Lee Evans, Willis Mcgahee, Nate Clements, Aaaron Schobel, Travis Henry, Chris Kelsay ) He's failed miserably producing later rd picks, as none that I can recall, have amounted to proving they can be quality starters. Terrence Mcgee is the only one that sticks out at this present time. He's helped field a top 5 defense, mostly by signing free agents like- sam adams, takeo spikes, london fletcher, jeff posey, lawyer milloy, troy vincent. Not that any of that is bad cause well they give us a upper echelon defense. However I think Donahoe clearly ignored depth this season only drafting 1 defensive player 5th rd undersized cb Eric King. Depth will be a big issue in the coming years, as we lose players to free agency, or they start to get too old. On the other side of the ball, Yes drafting Willis Mcgahee, is starting to look like a huge steal, and if Lee Evans improves on last year, and if Losman pans out we have some quality skill position players for awhile. However as has been beaten to death, the oline never seems to be addressed. Mike Williams, hasn't lived up to his draft day status, while he did show signs of improvement last year, enough to warrant his cap figure of 7+ million hardly. Chris Villiarial was a good addition, however he's 32 years old and on the downside of his career. Trey Teague wouldn't start for most teams in the league. I like the signing of Bennie Anderson, and don't hold much water with ravens fans opinions of him as a poor pass blocker and penalty magnet. Baltimore during Andersons tenure there wasn't exactaly loaded with a good qb and wr's. and Well LT Mike Gandy? Blah. I can't say with a straight face on that I honestly expect much of anything out of this unit. Jim Mcnally might be a great oline coach, but you can't expect him to cook a gourmet meal out of cheap groceries. Also we've yet to find quality #3 receiver and or a te, even though we've had our opportunites to draft them, when they were a need. I was excitied about Kevin Everetts potential here, but another year of cement shoes campbell. We need more receiving productivity out of this area, especially with a young qb, and to the overall benefit of our offense. Grade- C. While the defense is tops, the lack of improvement from year to year on offense gets him this grade. Overall evaulation- The on field product has definitly seen it's hi's and lows, and at some points look's fantastic and at some points looks porous. At times the team looks like one of the tops in the league, others it looks like we're in the same boat as the arizona cardnials and detroit lions of the league. I blame a lot of this on scheme change. 2002 pass happy offense, 2003- tried to run pass happy offense, with a group of players that were set to run ball control, 2004- still didn't rank high in yardage, but the play calling got better. This to me reflects poorly on Donahoe who as gm hires these coaches. I look foward to this season, cause to me at least it seems to be the first season of continuity within the offensive scheme. As of Right now I give Donahoe a c for a middle of the road performance.

Top 5 Reasons why Bills will make the Playoffs
MartyBall4Buffalo replied to WillyTK783's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Mostly I agree, except for where have the jets improved? They lost not only a good tackle in kareem mckenzie, but also lost their starting dt ferguson, and a backup dt. Drafted a 26 year old dt, who by all acounts is a raw project, and by the time he'll be good he'll be old. Starting Lance Legree at dt doesn't exactaly scare anyone. although the jets should still have a solid defense, even though their secondary is blah. Doug Jolley isn't a world beater at te by any means, and how will chad pennington recover from his shoulder injury? He didn't exactaly have the greatest arm before this. If anything they have more questions than we do. If we can stay healthy, and the line can be consistent. I don't excpect miracles, but if we can limit the mistakes of losman, while mainitaining a high level of play from our defense we have as good of a shot as anyone. -

I am going to have a hard time NOT
MartyBall4Buffalo replied to John from Riverside's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'll root for him cause he wears the uni, but I won't sing his praises till he proves it on the field. It's hard to praise someone when we've experienced basically a decade of below average quaterbacks. Prove it than he'll get the respect -
The end of NFL Primetime...

Howard Stern is complete garbage. NFL Primtime will be missed. The music for the highlights on sunday makes my week and makes me feel all warm and cozy inside, and after this year I won't have that anymore, but god forbid if people don't see Midget porn stars, retard's and stupid bimbo's and bulemics, R.I.P NFL PRIMETIME!!!! -

wait you wouldn't trade moulds for marvin harrison but Mussin Muhammed is an "elite" player? Sorry I can't agree there. If Muhammed was so "elite" carolina wouldn't have let him go for steve smith who's coming off injury and 2nd year wr keary colbert. muhammed's a nice player but by no means "elite" The torry holt thing I'm iffy on. On one hand I think a lot of his stats have to do with the supporting cast and the abundance of really craptastic defenses he plays in the nfc west. One the other hand I think he doesn't get the respect he deserves sometimes. I believe he's the only nfl wr in nfl history to have 5 straight 1300 yard seasons. I wouldn't trade for him just cause I don't like wr's who hit the ground as soon as they catch the ball. Say what you want about Owens character issues which I think are overblown, until he does something stupid off the field like pull a gun on someone fail drug tests, bump a cop with his car and try pushing her down a hill, hit his wife, stab or kill someone we should cut the guy some slack. He's an ultra productive wr who on game day will give it 120% unlike Randy Moss who only plays when he feels like it. I'd take TO any day. The point being Moulds is still productive, still a very important cog to the offense, and not someone we can afford to lose as wr's of his caliber are few and far between unless any of you are happy with a wr core of Lee Evans/Josh Reed/Roscoe Parrish and whoever I certinally wouldn't be.

Im surprised theres no word yet on Clements.
MartyBall4Buffalo replied to The Riddler's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm not buying this. Clements is too good a talent to let just walk. No offense to the Kevin Thomas's and Jabari Greer's and Eric Kings of the world but none of those guys are world beaters. Nice players sure. Guys you want your future secondary to build around? Hell No! Resigning Nate Clements is an absolute must. You don't let a all pro caliber 25 year old cb just walk. I'm sure tom donahoe also realizes that. You franchise him and work out a deal. -
Personally I'd take Michael Boulware/Nate Kaeding/Matt Schaub it would solve our safety depth, kicker problem and well it's still an unknown at qb but but two other big problems would be solved. Our defensive depth is relativly unknown. We don't know if any of these guys could step in start if need be with the exception of ryan denney at de. Nothing against losman but I believe in building a team not around a player but surrounding that team with talent and depth. Losman could be great and change my mind, but right now I'd like some offensive linemen and some defensive depth and a kicker and I'd be a really happy camper.

I highly highly highly doubt nate clements just walks after this season. Worst case scenairo he'll be franchised. -
I couldn't find stats for #'s of passes droped but I looked on footballoutsiders.com and found this passes thrown to receiver/yards/td's/% caught 152 1048 5 58% - eric moulds 86 769 13 57% - randy moss 127 1202 14 61% - TO 153 1399 11 61% - Joe Horn 137 1151 7 58% - Andre Johnson 169 1274 10 56% - Chad Johnson So It seems like even if moulds is droping passes as many are claiming he's still catching around the same % of passes as some of the top flight wr's in the league.

Defense is built to win now,
MartyBall4Buffalo replied to BuffBills#1's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't agree. Ben Roethlisberger wasn't the most important part of the steelers last season. They only went as far as their defense and running game could take them, by no means was Big Ben the be all and end all of their season. We'll only go as far as Mcgahee the defense and st's can take us while we gameplan for our qb not to lose. Some people put too much stock into quaterbacks. -
I don't agree that this will be moulds last year here for several reasons. 1. We're dangerously thin at wr depth. Even though we drafted a wr every year in the draft since 99 Peerless Price/ Avion Black/Reggie Germany/Josh Reed/Sam Aiken/Lee Evans/Roscoe Parrish. So That's 1 first rd wr 3 2nd rd wr's 2 4th rd wr's and 1 7th rd wr. 3 of them are no longer with the team. 2 of them have done a hell of a lot of nothing. 1 looks to have potential and the other in an unknown. 2. Roscoe Parrish will never be a #2 wr in this league. He's a career slot guy and that's why we got him to stretch zone defenes with his speed. He can not step in to the #2 role no matter how well he plays this season. 3. Losing Eric Moulds would mean drafting another wr high again next year neglecting other needs on this team such as the oline/dline/cb/fs/ss. 4. Not one wr on our roster has shown anything that would make anyone say at least with a straight face that they can come into lee evans spot and replace the production of eric moulds. Sam Aiken is too slow. Josh Reed has hands of stone. Parrish won't cut it. The ideal scenairo would be to either trade inleague for a big time wr, or lock up moulds long term to a friendly deal getting the most out of what he has left. and btw if you think Moulds contract is assinine Ike Bruce is making 10 million dollars this season.

Fantasy Football trade advice
MartyBall4Buffalo replied to The Riddler's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No just because that seems like a lot to give up. If it was for portis and 4th I'd say do it. I'm a bigger willis fan than most people, but you'd be giving up a proven back and your 2nd pick, banking on someone who only has 1 year of experience under his belt. -
If Eric Moulds actually had a good quaterback he'd be a top 5 wr. He's worked with some really lousy quaterbacks none of who are the caliber of daunte culpepper, peyton manning, donovan mcnabb, jon kitna and carson palmer. Instead he gets the likes of flutie, rob johnson, alex van pelt, drew bledsoe and the unknown in JP Losman not to mention we haven't exactaly had a good coach or all around productive offense in quite awhile. Maybe it's cause it's been of a lack of weapons around him. Owens in san fran also worked with steve young, jerry rice when rice was still productive, garrison hearst, uber productive fullback fred beasley not to mention charlie garner. Owens has constantly been on a team where there was other productive players around him. The same could be said for Randy Moss, Marvin Harrison, Chad Johnson, torry holt and hines ward. While Eric Moulds really didn't start until levy retired and than was surrounded by the great supporting cast of antowain smith, kamil loud, quinn early, really old andre reed, kevin williams, jay reimersma. Not exactaly Marshall Faulk, kurt warner, ike bruce, Edgerin James, chris carter, marcus pollard, reggie wayne, brandon stokley dallas clark or culpepper mcnabb or manning While Moulds has obviousily declined some, He's a still an upper echelon wr, and I'm happy to have him play for my team.
