Senior Bowl Practice & Game Thread

I heard that too. Being compared to Andy Dalton is a negative in my book. I know Bills fans are starving for a playoff birth, but I think we all should be starving for a Superbowl win. Andy Dalton will never win the Superbowl given the collection of elite QBs in the NFC for years to come. To me, Dalton will forever and always be an average starting NFL QB. The first thing I saw when I turned the program on was a seriously under thrown long ball by Nassib...LOL Of course, Mike Mayock clammed up after he was told it was Nassib. Sounds like he has a soft spot for him since he played ball with his kid. -

Which is the reason why I would be shocked if Marrone signs off on picking Nassib at #8. This is his first head coaching gig in the NFL and he knows that if they do that, he's all in on Nassib being a franchise QB and is banking his NFL head coaching future on it. If Nassib isn't a franchise QB then they will both be gone in three years. -

All I ask is that someone provide the video link where Nassib actually looks good throwing the long ball. I've watched about five of his 2012 games showing all passes on youtube and his long passes are horrible. I would love to be on board with him, but the NFL is a huge step up for college QBs that only the few with truly special skills can make and become franchise QBs. If you aren't any threat to throw a long ball, well we already know what that looks like with Fitzpatrick. I see Nassib's ceiling as that of an Andy Dalton. That may be an exciting prospect from some fans here, but I'd feel like that's a 10 year sentence to no chance at winning a Superbowl even if the guy hits his ceiling of talent level. The list of elite franchise QBs in the NFC now is enormous. The Bills choice in the next couple of years at who they will select to be their "QB of the future" is enormous. -

I'm with you on this. I would draft the best player at #8 like Warmack OG, Milliner CB, Werner DE, Jones LB, Patterson WR, Allen WR, or Jordan DE. Drafting Manuel in the 2nd or 3rd at least gives you a versatile, talented, athletic QB to work with, but also not prevent them from drafting a first round highly graded franchise QB in 2014 if one were there when they picked and they weren't satisfied with how Manuel was progressing. -

This thread was just a thinly veiled attempt at tamping down anti-Nassib sentiments, wasn't it. Where do I start. When I first saw the video of Nassib I was impressed. He seemed to be good at a lot of things. Then I watched the videos again, and again. The more I watched his videos, the more I didn't see him as a professional starting NFL QB. As was the case with Blaine Gabbert, Ryan Nassib looks to be another classic example of a very successful system, first read, dink and dunk, college QB who has no shot at modern day NFL success. I read your check list and I disagree with your basic assessments on his positives… "knows the coaching staff" - meaningless "knows the offense" - meaningless "has all the tools" - clearly false, his only known tool is first read "dink and dunk" passing "tall enough for an NFL QB" - true, yes he is "athletic" - false, Smith and Manuel are athletes, Nassib is not an athlete using NFL QB standards "strong arm" - biggest myth from what I've seen on video, his WRs had to stop cold to wait on his deep passes "good football awareness" - how would anyone know his awareness level when Nassib clearly wasn't asked to drop back, check through progressions and find the open man under pressure Out of the above list, Nassib's substandard NFL arm is the killer. He not only looks like Ryan Fitzpatrick (meaningless I know…lol) but his "substandard NFL arm" game looks very similar Fitzpatrick's. Opposing NFL defenses going against the Bills wouldn't even have to throw out their game plans. I wouldn't even consider Nassib until the third round on. BTW, the guy who actually does have ALL of the tools out of the whole group is EJ Manuel. To me and my eyes, Nassib is no where near the NFL QB prospect that Manuel is from the videos that I've watched. -
Ryan Nassib - QB - Syracuse

Other than Russ Lande I've never heard or read anywhere that Nassib is a possible #1 overall pick. If I'm wrong please show me the link. I almost fell off my chair when I read that Lande article. The next thing I thought of is that this guy might be getting paid just as there were rumors that Gabbert people were paying off Mike Mayock. The evidence is right there on youtube. There's no hiding that the guy can't throw the deep ball at the college level. The receivers are stopping cold to make the catch or the ball is way off target. I'm sure someone will provide the one or two times he hit a deep WR in stride, but that had to be a rare occurrence. I think NFL defenses will eat this guy for breakfast, lunch and dinner. He's this year's Blaine Gabbert. Very good college QB who has no chance at the pro level other than as a backup. If someone has the video showing Nassib throwing an accurate deep pass consistently please show us it. All I see in his videos is dink, dunk, dink, dunk, bad deep pass, dink, dunk, dink, dunk, bad deep pass. -

That Russ Lande article is from National Football Post. His own website must thinks he's nuts. Ryan Nassib is Ryan Fitzpatrick Jr. I've watched his videos and the guy can't throw the long ball at the college level. He will somehow be able to do it in the pros? I don't think so. -

Russ Lande- "The big thing that Nassib must work on is his deep passing as he tends to put too much air under his throws which forces his receivers to slow up and wait for the ball. This allows the defensive back to close and make a play on the ball." "After charting out Nassib in five games we consider him to be the best quarterback in the 2013 NFL Draft and worth drafting with the first overall pick" I haven't laughed this hard at a "draft expert" since the Blaine Gabbert mania a couple of years ago…LOL I seriously question if Lande is getting paid off by someone after reading that second quote. I don't know if NFP's Russ Lande knows this, but Ryan Nassib is the 10th rated QB and 98th rated player overall on the National Football Post's Big Board... http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/scouting_department.html -

If you don't have the ability to hit WRs in stride on the deep pass at the NFL level you are toast as a QB. What I see on the video are Syracuse WRs waiting on the deep ball or the ball being no where close. Also, his deep passes are of the floating variety. NFL defenses will eat him for lunch. Expect a lot of defenders in the box to stop Spiller and press coverage on our WRs. I'd be shocked if Marrone hitches his first NFL head coaching wagon to Nassib with that #8 overall pick. -

He didn't specifically say that. He said that if a team has targeted a quarterback it wants, then it should be prepared to draft him a round earlier than his grade to make sure another club doesn't get him first. This draft class is horrendous and I hope he wasn't talking about using the #8 pick on a QB. The only guy I like is EJ Manuel and I'd be happy to get him, but that's only in the second round or maybe as a trade up ahead of the second round QB lacking teams. This talk of drafting Nassib at #8 is insane. I've been watching a lot of the video on youtube of this guy and he is clearly a 3rd or later round talent IMO. He's a very good college QB who lacks the basic skills and talent to ever become anything more than a career backup on the professional level. To me, he's a Blaine Gabbert-like system "dink and dunk" college QB who lacks pocket presence when pressured, lacks accuracy in the long and intermediate passes and is a poor runner out of the pocket. He'll get his shot to start, but it will be a one and done type of starting career for Nassib. I'll be crushed if they draft Nassib at #8. I'm talking a Donte Whitner like disappointment. -
One thing that many don't know about EJ Manuel is that he got news that his Mom had breast cancer right before the season. Him having a good and productive season tells me that the kid is mentally tough. His Mom came out to greet him at the FSU/Florida senior day and he apparently lost it emotionally. So maybe for obvious reasons the emotion got the best of him that day in which he had a bad game. I could see him being a Steve McNair-like franchise QB for the Bills. It seems that the other QBs in this draft have too many flaws that will prevent them from ever becoming an elite QB. To me right now, EJ Manuel seems to be the only one who has the tools and the right head to actually make it to that level one day.

What??? Ryan Fitzpatrick is a better QB than Christian Ponder. Maybe I missed it, but I've never heard of anyone here wishing we had taken Ponder or still wishes he were our current QB. -

If they do it then it shouldn't even be considered a gutsy move. They would have to say that Nassib has a high probability of becoming an elite NFL QB if they pick him at #8. They were his coaches for the last three years and Marrone having coached Brees knows what kind of elite QB talent you need to win a Superbowl in today's NFL. Right now, I think it's a stretch to view Nassib as having an elite level ceiling. I could change my mind down the road, but I'm certainly not there right now. I hope the Bills draft EJ Manuel in the 2nd who I think has an elite level ceiling. If they take Nassib in the 2nd I'll have no problem with it. Because the Bills desperately need a franchise QB and both QBs would be worth taking a chance on at that point. -

1billsfan replied to BuffaloBillsForever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes I did. Because I was looking at the next 10 years of NFC Superbowl QBs and Nassib's chances of being anywhere near favored over one of them. Kaerpernick, Wilson, RGIII or Newton making Superbowl appearances in the next 10 years is far fetched to you? What, am I supposed to apologize for being skeptical that Nassib is close to that kind of talent level? I get that it'd be a great western New York storyline, but I want the Bills to win a Superbowl. If they do pick Nassib at #8, then I want you and everyone here wanting Nassib at #8 to say that he's has a great shot to become an NFL elite QB and beat one of the guys I mentioned in the Superbowl within the next 10 years. Because if you can't say that with a straight face then he should be picked in round 2 or later. The goal is to WIN the Superbowl, not just get in the playoffs or get to the Superbowl and lose. -

1billsfan replied to BuffaloBillsForever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
For all those wanting the Bills to take Nassib with the #8 pick just remember what the ultimate goal is for the team. That's to win the Superbowl of course. So with that, they will no doubt be facing one of these QBs...Rogers, Brees, Manning, Kaepernick, RGIII, WIlson or Newton. Do you honestly believe that Nassib has the kind of ability to win against one of those QBs in the Superbowl? I don't. I think his ceiling is that of a guy like Andy Dalton. If Dalton ever got his team in the Superbowl against one of those QBs then the Bengals would be 10 point underdogs. If the Bills pick Nassib at #8, they are telling everyone that he will be as good as one of those NFC QBs that I mentioned. Their head coach is Nassib's college coach so they will have no choice but to say that with a straight face. That's far fetched to me. Marrone coached Brees, so he obviously knows what kind of elite level QB play they'd be facing in the Superbowl. If Nassib's there at their second round pick and feel that there's the outside shot at him becoming as good as Eli Manning in a couple years then I wouldn't have a problem. I could buy that as taking a flyer on the guy. But picking him at #8 just doesn't pass the smell test right now. That is if their goal is to win a Superbowl and not just make the playoffs like the Bengals do without ever having a legitimate shot at a winning a championship when you look at the highly talented QBs in the other conference. It's my hope the Bills can trade down for a 2014 1st round pick as ammo for a trade up to get a legitimate franchise QB in next year's draft. The flyer QB I'd take in the 2nd round this year would be EJ Manuel who looks like the only QB in this draft that has the "high ceiling" talent to eventually compete with the best in the Superbowl. -
We're at #8 in what's looking like a substandard draft class so far. If we could get another quality pick, then that'd of course would be a great scenario for the Bills. One thing that the Bills said they want to do is work the "moneyball" angle. Moving back in the draft for picks could fit into the new kind of approach.
-
What is your "perfect" draft scenario?
1billsfan replied to rayray808's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'd switch out Ogletree with Warmack, let Levitre walk and use the money spend on the huge Levitre top guard contract on two top free agent LBs. -
One thing to remember is that Doug Marrone more than anyone on the planet knows if Ryan Nassib has a Drew Brees-like elite QB ceiling level (Doug coached Brees in New Orleans). So if the Bills select him with the 1st or even the 2nd pick we should be expecting them to be telling everyone that he definitely has all the tools to and is expected to become an elite level QB. Obviously not in the vein of Peyton Manning, Luck or RGIII when they came out, but more of what the expectations were with Rothlesberger and Eli Manning when they were drafted. The Bills and Marrone will have no way to get around that question. Because when it comes to the goal of winning a Superbowl, they will have to face an elite NFC QB like Brees, Rodgers, Manning, Kaepernick, Wilson or Newton. I don't see Nassib attaining that king of level. I see more of the Andy Dalton type when I look at Nassib. I'd much rather have EJ Manuel than Nassib at this early stage because I see someone who has potentially elite level QB skills and a much higher ceiling than Nassib. So the Bills, Marrone and Nassib had better be prepared for very high expectations if he's picked with either the 1st or 2nd pick. I just don't want a playoff appearance, I want them to win a Superbowl.
-
I think EJ Manuel looks much more like a NFL QB than either Wilson or Nassib who both look like products of college "dink and dunk" system QBs. I normally don't like posting highlight videos, but just look at Manuel in 2011 and see the footwork and comfort level in and out of the pocket. Plus his throwing motion looks much better than Wilson's and Nassib's.
-
Just so you know, I was on board with Kaepernick in the second and Wilson in the third in the last two drafts respectively. Just as I am on board with them picking either Manuel, Nassib in the second or Dysert in the third this year. What I'm against is them picking them picking a QB in the first this year because I just don't see any worthy of that pick and passing over a great player. My trade down scenario is a forward thinking "insurance" policy. I want the Bills to win a Superbowl. The only way to do that is to find a QB that can compete against the NFC QBs that I mentioned. I have no problem with them taking a flyer in the 2nd or 3rd this year. But having ammunition for next years draft is at least another possible avenue towards the goal of finding that elite QB.
-
I see a lot of "JAG" QBs in this draft. Passing on players with much much higher ratings would be a highly questionable approach IMO. I don't mind taking a flyer on a QB like Manuel in the 2nd, but I'd rather target their franchise QB in the 2014 draft when Manziel, Bridgewater and Boyd will all probably be available and all have the games to compete with NFC elite QBs if they were ever to find themselves in the Superbowl in the next ten years. Tell me that any QB in this 2013 draft could compete with Brees, Rodgers, Manning, Kaepernick, RGIII, Wilson or Newton. I just don't see it. I want the Bills to trade back in the 1st this year for a 2014 1st round pick as ammunition for a 2014 trade up for their QB of the future with true elite franchise QB talents.
-
The Bills picking a QB in the 1st means that they would be passing on "slam dunk" players like Warmack, Werner or Milliner. That starts looking like a Ngata situation where you look at that one player for the next ten years and say "ok…again, why didn't we pick Ngata?" The only 2 QBs I'd even consider picking in the first is Geno Smith or possibly EJ Manuel (highest upsides, but still have big question marks). However, I'd still pick the "slam dunk" player and wait to see who's there at our 2nd round pick. BTW, I think that Geno Smith will be drafted by the Chiefs. He will become Reid's next McNabb.
-
It's my hope the Bills can find a team to switch picks with in the 20-29 pick range that's willing to give up their 2014 first round pick (target Minter LB, Jones C, Olgetree LB, Austin WB). The reason being is that I want the Bills to use their 2nd round pick this year on EJ Manuel then also have some serious "insurance" ammunition to move up for a franchise QB in the 2014 draft (that is of course if EJ Manuel doesn't look like the real deal by seasons end).

Zac Dysert - QB - Miami of Ohio
1billsfan replied to TheBuffaloBills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I watched that video and I see a first read, dink and dunk college system QB. He seems very good at it, but so was Blaine Gabbert. I worry that the Bills would be hanging their hats on a guy with a "low ceiling". The question I have is if he could ever be any better than an Andy Dalton. I see this guy and that's the type of ceiling I see. If the Bills want to win a championship then they will have to face Brees, Rodgers, Manning, RGIII, Newton or Kaepernick in the Superbowl. I would much rather the Bills pick a guy with a "high ceiling" like EJ Manuel. He has the Newton/Kaepernick "high ceiling" skills we need to look for when we draft our elite QB of the future. We need to roll the dice on greatness, not "he's good enough to get you in the playoffs". I look at guys like Dysert and Nassib and worry that they simply just don't have the "high ceiling" needed to get the Bills a Superbowl win.
